This is no normal book on finance. It details the intimate synergies between American military power and the financial means of Wall Street and Washington to create the most extensive global empire since the fall of the British Empire a century ago. It traces the rise of America from the 1800s to the hegemonic global superpower on the ashes of the British Empire by the end of the Second World War.

Here’s some of what you will learn:

+ How a cabal of international Wall Street bankers in violation of the US Constitution made a coup d’etat in 1913 to create the private Federal Reserve to finance World War I and the rise of what they would later call the American Century.
+ How the Rockefeller family emerged during the Great Depression as the most influential family shaping America’s destiny into and after World War II.
+ The real agenda of the American Century triumphantly proclaimed in 1941.
+ The real relation between America’s military industrial complex and Bretton Woods Dollar System
+ How Wall Street banks systematically lifted all restraints on their expansion that ended in the 2007 Sub-prime meltdown and 2008 global financial crisis.

The dollar financial system of Wall Street was born not at a conference in Bretton Woods New Hampshire in 1944. It was born in the first days of August, 1945 with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After that point the world was in no doubt who was the power to reckon with. This book is no ordinary book about money and finance. Rather it traces the history of money as an instrument of power; it traces the evolution of that power in the hands of a tiny elite that regards themselves as, quite literally, gods-The Gods of Money. How these gods abused their power and how they systematically set out to control the entire world is the subject.

An eye opening examination of who wields the power today.
By Kindle Customer
William Engdahl's books should have two Cautions; the first, don't start this book unless you have enough time on your hands to finish the book. When you first start reading "Gods of Money: Wall Street and the Death of the American Century" you are quickly engrossed in the main subject of the book, "The power that Wall Street exerts over Washington and even the whole world."

"Gods of Money" is difficult to put down. Each chapter seems to be more revealing than the next. It begins with a not too distant history that predates the Federal Reserve and traces things up to current times. The book is very enlightening regarding the history of power, the way it evolved and how it continues to influence our lives currently.

Unlike many books (here I don't want to single out any author) that asks open ended questions like "Could the huge drawings at Nazca, Peru that can only be seen from the air be a type of signal for visitors from outer space?" when Engdahl presents events, documents or quotations they are carefully and fully documented at the end of each chapter. If you wish to know more on a particular subject then you simply look up the well documented reference (endnote) at the end of the chapter.

The second Caution would be that if you are not prepared to have an experience similar to what transpires with puppies between week one and week two (their eyes are opened) then you should exercise caution regarding the reading of this book.

Most people think that their lives are like a particle in a Brownian movement, buffeted all around by the vicissitudes of life. When you read this book you will understand that life is not like this at all. There are powerful forces that are truly in control just not overt or blatant.

Think for a moment would you ever have believed that we would take $700 Billion of taxpayer's money and bailout Wall Street? It has been said many times that this is "Privatizing the Profits and Socializing the Debt" and to top it all off none of the money was used to buy "Troubled Assets!" They are still on the books. As William Engdahl says in his forward this is not a book to address these financial events, it is a book about Power. I make this point to emphasize that it took a lot of power to make this happen when so much of the public was against it.

So if you have read this far in this review click on the link above to order the book, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Where to from here?
By D. A. Wolter
Being 76 years old I have been aware, incrementally, of the sea of greed and corruption our country has been sailing in for most of its history. It is very uncomfortable for me to admit that the crimes committed in the name of Democracy and Freedom are no more than propaganda, bought and paid for with the lives and blood of the citizens not privileged enough to be in the top $250,000/per year income bracket. Our modern elementary education system teaches nothing that protects our kids from the perils and pitfalls of life under the military/industrial/financial/media complex that passes for government in my country.

"Gods of Money", shows that this corrupt system has been around for a long time and its existance cannot be justified by the day dreams of mythologists like Ayn Rand, or snake oil salesmen like Limburger.

I would only hope that this book sheds enough light on our hypocracies that the younger generation can use that light to reveal the path to true government of, by, and for the People of the United States.

Truly accurate!!!!

Having been in the Mortgage industry from 1985 - 2006. This is one of the most honest accounts of the raping of the average middle and under privileged American's I observed. It didn't matter if we reported these abuses to the state mortgage/real estate departments, or Chase, Countrywide, etc. Their answer was if we don't fund it someone else will! Absolutely no regard for the consumer at all. Now we have the king of corporate bankruptcy in charge! God help us all!!!!

Too difficult for an introduction
By Not me, but somebody else
This is the fifth Very Short Introduction I've read (others included Logic, Ancient Philosophy, Anthropology, and Sociology) and it is the first that wasn't fun to read. I think Taylor's style is too academic for a series like this. Sentences like "I do not wish to suggest that Plato had a clear grasp of the distinction between purely conceptual definitions and the substantive type of account exemplified by the cognitive theory" (60) require entirely too much examination and prior knowledge of the subject to be considered introductory material for most people reading without tutelage. And there are plenty of more detailed books alraedy available that are written in that style.
I do not wish to suggest that I'm an idiot, but I do look for something a bit more breezy in an introduction to a topic. I think many people turn to introductions because the original works can sometimes be a slog to read. I choose carefully which original works I'm going to make the effort to read, and I want introductions to material that will either a) bring me up to speed on things I don't have the time to read, b) give me basic information to choose more wisely which works to read or c) expand works I've already read. Having already read The Republic, I found that none of these 3 goals was accomplished by this volume. Its a shame, too, because VSI has been by far and away my favorite series of introductions. I hope they rethink this Socrates introduction and publish a new one aimed at a more general audience.

Very good introduction to Socrates, with qualifications.
By Epops
Prof. Taylor teaches philosophy at Oxford University, and clearly knows his subject. However, his writing style leaves much to be desired. He tends to be convoluted and verbose, with too many parentheses. This is fine for an academic paper, but not for "A Very Short Introduction". He is worst in the first three chapters, in which he reviews Socrates' life and historical context. His discussion of "the Socratic problem" in chapter 3 drags at times, but if you plow through it, ends up being actually pretty good. However, it does not compare for clarity and crispness of reasoning with the discussions of the problem by Prof. Vlastos.

Taylor's style does not improve in Chapter 4, on the Socrates of Plato, but I found that in spite of his occasional incoherence there is something of value in this chapter. He does a good job of laying out Plato's approach to the problem of the nature of morality, and his ultimate failure in that project. His comments on Plato's defense of Socrates against the Sophists are quite good, although I've just started The Republic myself, so I may have to revise this opinion later.

Chapter 5, Socrates' influence on later philosophers, including the Skeptics, Cynics, and Stoics in the Hellenistic period, and then in the 19th century Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche, was quite illuminating. All three 19th century philosophers were obsessed with Socrates, and each saw him and used him in his own unique way. He emphasizes the kinship between Socrates and Nietzsche in particular. This is clearly the area that interests Prof. Taylor most, where he put in most of his effort, with good and useful results. His style is noticeable tighter and clearer in this chapter.

Those who have no background in philosophy at all should not start with this book. Those who are in the process of learning some philosophy, perhaps at an intermediate level, should with a little patience find something of interest here. Those who wish to have a deeper understanding of Socrates life and thought should, after reading this book, by all means go on to read the two volumes of the master, Prof. Gregory Vlastos, Socrates: Ironist and Moral Philosopher, and Socratic Studies.

Good for those with a background in philosophy.
By Mark I. Vuletic
Taylor's SOCRATES is detailed and scholarly, and a useful work for those who have already had a fair amount of exposure to the Platonic dialogues. However, its level of technicality is liable to confuse and frustrate beginners, who just want a readable overview of who Socrates was and what he taught. Even these readers will benefit from the first chapter, which discusses the life of Socrates, but the following chapters, which deal with his thought and influence, will be heavy-going for the average reader. As such, this book is recommended to philosophers, but really is too advanced to qualify as a standard introduction.

From Kirkus Reviews
paper 0-9652621-8-9 Originally published in 1946 in Hungary, this ambitious and relentlessly arcane novel reshapes the stuff of legend into a compelling, if ponderous, philosophical melodrama. Subtitled ``The Elixir of Eternal Life,'' it recounts the harrowing adventures endured, over a span of four centuries, by Hans Burgner, a 16th-century alchemist's apprentice who murders his master in order to possess a potion rumored to confer the gift of immortality. Having drunk this elixir, Burgner is condemned to be repeatedly reborn, century after century, as a cursed visionary who sees, but is powerless to prevent, the injustices and cruelties that lie in wait for his fellowmen. Eventually purified by his sufferings, Cornelius (Hans's final incarnation) fulfills his destiny: to prophesy, to a world ravaged by war, the reappearance of the Messiah. Discursive and hyperbolic, The Red Lion, a bulky mixture of biblical, alchemical, and historical lore (which rather resembles Eugene Sue's epic romance The Wandering Jew), nevertheless explores with passionate intensity its deeply flawed hero's passage from sin and error, through a world more flawed even than he, to a paradoxical state of grace. It's a very imperfect novel, but a memorable reading experience all the same. -- Copyright 1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The Lion Roars
By Mark Stavish, The Institute for Hermetic Studies
The Red Lion is one of those rare books that comes along once or twice in a generation. Written under the stress of constant terror and death, as Budapest was under siege during the final days of World War Two, the author brings to her readers a message of hope that surpasses the many New Age slogans about 'love and light' that are passed off as truth or 'occult novels' that are either psuedo-pornographic or just plain dull. If you are interested in reading about the nature of human evolution, the Western occult traditions, and the role of personal relationships across lifetimes, and how it all will come to make sense in the end, then The Red Lion is for you. The Red Lion is more than just an accurate book about alchemy and tantric mysticism, it is a book about life.

Major Rosicrucian Work
By A. Ali
Though this work is a novel, no-one should be deceived into thinking that this is anything less than a major alchemical work. A whole range of philosophical and esoteric issues are discussed. This reviewer could only absorb the book in small doses; there was so much to mull over. It's amazing it took over 50 years for this book to be translated into English.
The writer does exhibit a Rosicrucian slant at places. For example, reference to the "Chemical Wedding". The emphasis on the Comte de St. Germaine. At other places Szepes refers to Eastern practices, e.g. the Tibetan practice of bringing to life an inanimate statue which subsequently has to be demolished. Thus the polarity between pyschological projection and 'external' reality is re-established, which tends to become blurred when one sets out on the esoteric path and realizes that there is no distinction between psychological and physical reality. The notion of the homunculus is discussed at length. The Emerald Tablet is given in both Latin and English. The list could go on. A spell-binding book that this reviewer found edifying.

Very interesting book
By A Customer
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in alchemy and self development. It would fall under the category of "occult pot boiler" but is nevertheless very interesting and informative. I also checked out the publishers' website, which featured an interview with the author, who apparently dictated the book as the bombs were falling on Budapest during World War II. Impressive.

Farm Journal's Homemade Breads
By itzsoeasy1960
I love this book. I have had it for a long time. In fact I am baking biscuits, as I type, right now. I have made so many breads with this book. I am partial to the sweet breads. My grandson came over to my house, and we made sweet rolls while I cooked dinner. The rolls never got to the table. He ate them, and when his mom came over, she finished them all up. Next time I'll make more than one batch. If you love homemade breads this book is for you.

Mom uses the book so much it is falling apart
By Christy Dyer
I would like to order this book for my Mother. She makes the best bread, pies, & pizza dough from the recipes in this book. I hope they publish it again. Her's is falling apart. It is in about 5 pieces and she still manages to find her favorite recipes, but I can't find her recipes. I want a copy for myself so I can make great bread like her. I would recommend this to anyone who has just started making breads or to someone who has been making bread for years.

Predatory Bureaucracy: The Extermination of Wolves and the Transformation of the West, by Michael J. Robinson

Predatory Bureaucracy is the definitive history of America’s wolves and our policies toward predators. Tracking wolves from Coronado’s day to the present, author Michael Robinson shows that their story merges with that of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey. This federal agency was chartered to research insects and birds but—because of various pressures—-morphed into a political powerhouse operating wildlife--extermination programs.

Drawing on deep research and wide reading, Robinson's vivid narrative follows the wolves from the eras of explorers, mountain men, and bounty hunters through the wolves' 120-year entanglement with the federal government. He shares the parallel story of the Survey's rise, detailing the personal and political forces that allowed extermination programs to continue—despite opposition from hunters, animal lovers, scientists, environmentalists, and presidents—though the agency's mission and even its name changed several times. Federal predator control nearly eliminated wolves throughout the United States and Mexico and radically changed American lands and wildlife populations.

The story Michael Robinson tells in Predatory Bureaucracy will fascinate readers interested in wildlife, nature, agriculture, and environmental politics.

Informative history of wolves in the West
By Anonymous
Before you open it for the first time, Predatory Bureaucracy can be bit intimidating due to its length. But once I finally started reading, the pages melted away quickly. Even though I knew the ultimate outcome of the wolf history described in the book - the ultimate reintroduction to great controversy and current/recent debates over delisting them, and the additional difficulties in the Southwest - the parts of Predatory Bureaucracy that transition from chronicling the persecution of predators to a growing appreciation for their value somehow 'tricked' me into imagining that the book would have a happy ending where everybody eventually came to accept the value of intact ecosystems and let up on the persecution. That is, until at about page 330, when I took a break from reading to check my inbox and found an email from Defenders of Wildlife about plans to reinstate aerial hunting of wolves in Wyoming. So that relieved me of any illusions quickly, but I thought the fact that the book was able to induce a temporary disconnect from the reality I know and love is a testament to the author's ability to create an engaging narrative out of what could have easily been just a collection of facts and quotes, making the book both devastatingly informative and quite readable. Recommended for anyone with an interest in wildlife

I recommend this book for anyone concerned with the environment.
By Dr. Pearl Katz
I recommend this book for anyone concerned with the environment and the effect of government policies on the environment. It is an impressive, well-written scholarly work. It traces national and local policies toward (against) wolves from the mid-19th century to the present. The research is thorough and extensive. It demonstrates a profound understanding of the relationship between government and land-owners and the implications of policies for the ecology of the Western U.S. It includes an unprecedented detailed count of the wolves, coyotes, and livestock killed since 1878. The writing is beautiful. For example, on page 4, Robinson writes: "In fall the crisp weather turned aspen leaves yellow, and the first wisps of snow wafted in like unhurried emissaries from a season the hard, cold ground had never quite forgotten." This is a ground-breaking work.

The Bestseller Code: Anatomy of the Blockbuster Novel, by Jodie Archer, Matthew L. Jockers

"When a story captures the imagination of millions, that's magic. Can you qualify magic? Archer and Jockers just may have done so."—Sylvia Day, New York Times bestselling author

Ask most book people about massive success in the world of fiction, and you’ll typically hear that it’s a game of hazy crystal balls. The sales figures of E. L. James or Dan Brown, they’ll say, are freakish—random occurrences in an unpredictable market. But what if there were an algorithm that could predict mega-bestsellers with stunning accuracy? What if it knew, just from reading an unpublished manuscript, not just that genre writers like John Grisham and Danielle Steel would sell in huge numbers, but also that authors such as Junot Diaz, Jodi Picoult, and Donna Tartt had signs of New York Times bestselling all over their pages?

Thanks to Jodie Archer and Matthew Jockers, the algorithm exists, the code has been cracked, and the results are stunning. Fine-tuned on over 20,000 contemporary novels, the system analyzes themes, plot, character, setting, and also the frequencies of tiny but amazingly significant markers of style. The “bestseller-ometer” then makes predictions, with fascinating detail, about which specific combinations of these features will resonate with readers. Somehow, in all genres, it is right over eighty percent of the time.

This book explains groundbreaking text mining research in accessible terms, but its real story is in what the algorithm reveals about reading and writing and how successful authorship works. It offers a new theory on the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. It explains why Gone Girl sold millions of copies. It reveals the most important theme in bestselling fiction and which topics just won’t sell. And then there’s “The One,” the single most paradigmatic bestseller of the past thirty years that a computer picked from among thousands. The result is surprising, a bit ironic, and delightfully unorthodox.

The project will be compelling and provocative for all book lovers and writers. It is an investigation into our intellectual and emotional responses to stories, as well as a big idea book about the relationship between creativity and technology. It turns conventional wisdom about book publishing on its head. The Bestseller Code will appeal to fiction lovers and data nerds.

A Word of Warning
By EVS
I found out about this research a while ago, and was looking forward to the book. The premise is perfect: science examining art and thus illuminating human condition. Well, examine it did, illuminate – not so much. I found myself simultaneously impressed with the depth of the research and disappointed with the triviality of the findings. Moreover, as much as the authors hope that their formula will open publishing industry to new writers overlooked otherwise, I have a feeling it will only serve to build more, higher walls, imprisoning writers in even tighter cells. Ironically, what would mediate the potential for abuse is making the formula available to the public in the form of a readily accessible test. It’s just the question of time until application of this or similar math becomes obligatory among agents and publishers. If the potential success or failure of an artist’s project is going to depend on a formula, the artist should have the right to face his accuser.

Saved My Book from the Abyss of Meh
By MD
Data for books the way it should be.
I will admit I love data and how concrete it is. As a creative who straddles the line between that and the analytical, this truly scratched my itch. I'm currently working on a book that will be finished in mere days. After reading this book (in one setting of an afternoon), I took my notes and takeaways and revisited what I'd written.
Mistakes that I'd never have seen blared at me. Not the normal mistakes of grammar or developmental issues--no mistakes that would have sent my book into the abyss of Meh. With a few tweaks here and there, my manuscript now gets me excited. I was able to change my perception of my writing to provide the entertainment ride it should be.
I will not attempt to tell you what I did, because I believe this books should be experienced in the customization of your own needs as a writer. I will say that I found the graphs they provided on pacing, the tips on theme and their examination of "The Girl" books and how 50 Shades and Da Vinci Code could be twins to be very illuminating.
This book may not be for you if you do not enjoy the value of data, have the ability to grasp the data and then conceptualize it into how it pertains to you or believe that a computer can read a book and then tell you how to make yours better. But, if you are adventurous enough to challenge your view of how to approach your next book, this one might be for you.
I love learning new things about writing and myself. This book allowed me to do that.

and in love with, all things literary
By Brywig
As an author who has just had his first novel published after ten years of trying to crack fiction's code, I was fascinated by this analytical perspective on the makeup and mechanics of bestselling novels. Authors Archers and Jockers tell this nonfiction account with the deft skills of seasoned storytellers, building tension in chapters that end with the revelation of the key principles and star books that prove the efficacy of the techniques they explore. Their disciplined approach to maintaining objective standards for their investigation into the themes and approaches common to the most popular books is tempered with wry humor and enhanced by the seasoned perspective of a pair who is obviously aware of, and in love with, all things literary. Even the nerdiest passages devoted to the computer coding that formed the architecture of their experiment were framed with language that kept those macro-views of their work aligned with its big-picture results. Reading The Bestseller Code prompted regular reflection on my own approach to storytelling and inspired me to focus more strongly on the natural voice and human relationships that the study these pros designed revealed to be two of the most important "secrets" responsible for the most successful tales. Highly recommended for writers and readers of all genres of fiction!
