Authoritative and richly detailed study

One of the most revealing, authentic and long-waited books yet published about Ames case written by two CIA veterans with direct knowledge of many dramatic episodes of the Cold War.
The authors - Vertefeuille&Grimes - two tenacious and experienced CIA officers made a superb team (supported by many other colleagues) and wrote, with authority and convinction, a book with many priceless stories.
What makes this book so compelling is that almost every word is true, but, by no means, a complete picture of many Cold War episodes, as you can see below.

The book starts in the first two chapters with a personal description of authors' careers, a fine team as I said, after a short, but explanatory, preface.
In chapter three we were provided with an insightful look and general overview of SE (Soviet and East European) division operations.
Starting with chapter 4 and continuing with the next two, we're providing with the best account about Polyakov case, the GRU general receiving a special attention from the authors and a special dedication at the beginning of the book.

The facts are as detailed as possible, but omitted one important factor - the death of one of Polyakov sons in US, because he was not allowed, by his superiors, to carry out a life-saving surgical operation in a US hospital (Cherkashin&Feifer/Spy Handler) a fact emerging in revenge on the Soviet system, a key element in supporting his double life.
I liked the story of Walt Lomac, an example of personal integrity, in the clash with his CIA superiors about Polyakov bona fide (page 33-34).
Major spy cases are presented in a genuine manner in the next two chapters (40 pages) summarizing the activities of Kulak, Chernov, Poleshuk Piguzov, Yuzhin among others, actually the most valuable CIA network in history. Speaking about B. Yuzhin I noticed, for the first time in the public domain, "the contribution" of FBI's Pitts in this case.
Vertefeuille&Grimes related with accuracy and in fascinating detail each case and I believe that no one knows as much background on these cases as they.
Chapters 9-16 are dedicated to the first reactions to the losses of 1985, gradually focusing on Ames investigation specifically.

The last chapters are more analytical describing Ames (as person and as spy), a comparison between Ames and Hanssen- a fascinating look into the minds of these two characters and concluding with "Final thoughts", a chapter filled with substantial evidence of a somehow troubled US intel community. The book did not spare criticizing some key figures of SE division- for example, M. Bearden activity receiving a particular "scrutiny" (page 19, 100, 133, 211 etc).
The interval between pages 194-207 is filled with an extremely valuable Chronology, a true intelligence history of events and main characters.
The book is well supported by 18 B&W photos showing the main characters of the book (5 are with Polyakov).
There is a useful and short notes section and bibliography to indicate the sources of various statements, so the readers can verify their accuracy, consider the context, or follow them further. There is also a comprehensive index.

In searching for a title to my review I was about to write "a complete study", but few "anomalies" convinced me to change my mind. Ocassionaly, I also did not like the switching between first and third person, often in a very confusing manner. (sometimes a third "person" is speaking about the authors!)
Firstly, there are no accounts about the help of a Russian defector in capturing Ames, a deliberately omission, in my opinion. The authors gave no details about the defector's support - providing no name, but dates, places and times that meshed with the background of Ames - a fact mentioned in two books (Bearden&Risen/The Main Enemy and Cherkashin&Feifer/Spy Handler) and named by R.Kessler (The secrets of the FBI) as being Alexander Zaporozhsky, one of the four Western spies involved in the July 2010 spy swap. This man truly deserves a book for the story of his life.
Another intriguing account referred to the fate of V. Vetrov, the famous "Farewell". It is hard to believe-after reading several books and professional opinions- that Vetrov, as KGB veteran, made the stupid mistake to confess his spying to an unknown person (in prison!), the story so frequently stated in earlier books about this case. Much close to the truth, I believe, is that he was betrayed by someone in the CIA (Bearden) or DST/DGSE (Kalugin).
Thirdly, the fact that both traitors were discovered with the help of ex-KGB/SVR agents was not included in chapter 18 - A comparision between Ames and Hanssen, obviously also a deliberate omission.

Eventually, throughout the book, the authors are not addressing rumors of an undiscovered KGB spy- another Ames or Hanssen- still at large in the US intel community, the so-called "the fourth mole", an interesting episode confirmed by both Bearden (as one involved in the investigations) and Cherkashin (who, as KR line chief, should have direct knowledge or could be the handler of this spy). However, inside the book (page 72) there are a few tidbits about some anomalies represented by O. Gordievsky and S. Bokhan cases. In later case, it is not clear when he was recruited (1975/page 97 or 1976/page 72 and 196); also, in some studies, Gordievsky is suspected that he was recruited as back as 1966, SIS taking over in 1974.

Written by two fine and skilled storytellers as a lesson in the murky world of intelligence during Cold War, this book is a remarkable and major contribution to the literature of espionage that treats spy wars between KGB/SVR and CIA.
For every serious student who likes dead-serious nonfiction books it should be a required and indispensable reading.

Rick Ames: The Insiders' Account

CI investigation is an art form carried out by experts. It is not a science and throwing money and unqualified personnel or helpers at such a problem does not guarantee or even improve the chances of success. ..Luck is involved--While there are several `must haves' for a successful CI investigation, knowledge of the target organization, in this case the LGB, is paramount. We had to be experts on the personnel, organization, tradecraft, and operational philosophy of the KGB to have a chance of success.

First things first: Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, the two CIA professionals most central to the uncovering of the CIA's most calamitous traitor, Aldrich "Rick" Ames, have produced an insider's description of the case which clearly outclasses five earlier treatments by outside authors, whose access was limited. Their analysis is certain to become the classic description of this treason which resulted in catastrophic damage to CIA's Moscow operations and the deaths of at least eight CIA agents. They tell not just the Ames case but embed it in a compendium of all the major Soviet KGB and diplomatic agents who worked for the CIA and FBI in this period. They are candidly critical of the FBI, especially the bungled surveillance of Edward Lee Howard, but equally censorious of many CIA misadventures--of which there were many including constant breakdown of compartmentalization. They forthrightly (remember the book was subject to the Agency's standard pre-publication "review") offer their pantheon of heroes--Soviet Division Chief Burton Gerber; Gus Hathaway; Paul Raymond; Ray Reardon; Dan Payne. And in their view the hapless--DCI Bill Casey; SE Chief Milt Bearden; and, worst of all, CIA's Counterintelligence chief, James Jesus Angleton. All of these are familiar figures to everybody in the CIA.

The book might equally have been entitled "Handbook on CIA," for it provides details on internal structure and the true names of many operatives long considered classified. Jeanne and Sandy (as they call themselves in the book) offer delightful accounts of their recruitment to the Agency, and how in the 50's women were deemed fit only for the typing pool, not professional intelligence operatives. What eventually brought them together was their Russian language and they ended up in the SR (Soviet Russia) division.
Of particular interest is their insider's view of the "maze of double and triple-think" which developed in the wake of the defection of the KGB's Anatoliy Golitsyn and subsequently Yuriy Nosenko. The unpardonable treatment of Nosenko is not only a huge debacle for the Agency but led to a vast witch hunt--led by Angleton--for a `mole' in the Soviet section. This was dubbed the "Monster Plot" by skeptics who baptized the subscribers to this plot theory the "Black Hats." "According to the Monster theory, every CIA or FBI success against the Soviet target was really KGB success, with the KGB controlling the operation from beginning to end--misleading, confusing, and deceiving the naïve Americans." The "Black Hats" virtually paralyzed operations against Soviet targets for a decade and shattered the careers of CIA officers.

Operations against the Soviets appeared to be going splendidly until suddenly in late May 1985 the Soviets began rolling up, one after another, all the Agency's Moscow assets, arrested and executed. DCI Casey designated John Stein to do a report. Parallel to this, Burton Gerber, recognizing by November the CIA faced a huge problem, instituted his own personal crusade to explain the arrests. A series of clever ploys made clear the problem was not with communications. In November 1989 a seemingly innocuous tidbit emerged which was to play a major role in catching Ames. A colleague of the authors who had known Ames in Mexico remarked how he suddenly seemed to have acquired a lot of money. Operating on the basis of "follow the money" the investigative team discovered unusually large bank deposits by Ames. A variety of indicators suggested a polygraph, which Ames took--and due in part to his ability to talk his way out of conflicts--and passed.

The final phase began in early 1991 when Jeanne was authorized to revisit the 1985 losses in Moscow. The Agency set up a Special Investigation Unit--which diplomatically reached out to the sometimes cantankerous FBI for cooperation, eventually establishing excellent working relations with some agents. The first list of possible suspects they put together included 160 names. Despite this enormous number, members of the team were generally agreed that Ames was likely their man. Still, the investigation involved scanning thousands of documents and a whole litany of other time consuming and labor intensive efforts. One major problem was that Ames, in his normal assignment of recruiting KGB officers, was allowed to meet and fraternize with them. Thus his job provided cover for his espionage operations. Financial records remained critical. At one point reviewing the latest deposits, Redmond exclaimed, "Rick is a goddamn Russian spy." The CIA's extensive investigation paid off in May 1993 when the FBI took over for a criminal investigation. A combination of personal surveillance, cameras and other data prompted the bureau to act: On 21 February 1994, Ames was enticed on a ruse to the office and arrested. His wife, Rosario, was also later taken into custody.

The authors' last chapter, "Final Thoughts" is of particular interest given their decades of experience and insight. They cautioned future investigators to write more memoranda to cover themselves when, as happened, Congress asks questions such as why the CIA inquiry didn't proceed more quickly. They admonished themselves for not catching on to "follow the money" earlier. They advised successors to be more forthright with Congress with periodic updates.

Especially arresting, however, is the authors recognition that the challenges of counterintelligence have changed dramatically since the Cold War. They realize they worked in a simpler world than we have now. The Soviet Union was the enemy; there were no moral ambiguities. Now targets are scattered, amorphous, discrete, non-governmental."We could concentrate our efforts on one country and one government. Alas, the colleagues who have come after us do not have that luxury."

This book needed to be written

I loved it but I spent 32 years working intel. I think it is a very compelling picture of the difficulty and complexity of intell research. I was especially relieved that the authors included the obstacles and distractions often thrown in the analysts way and finally someone wrote about the big happy trip Congress and leadership of the intell agencies took once the wall came down in Berlin. The authors described the frustration analysts felt when we were directed away from important areas and the years wasted while leadership engaged in busy work. It's one thing to reduce the focus but another thing to pretend that focus is not needed. Bravo to the dedicated analysts at CIA.

Fantastic resource

Hands down the best resource I've found for practical examples of how to write web scrapers in Python. The author's style is very easy to read and very practical focused. He also clearly knows the subject inside and out and does a great job of not only showing you actual working code to do everything but also covers multiple approaches for different situations as well as key pitfalls to avoid.

Whirlwind Tour of Web Scraping Employing Python

The background requirement for the book would be a basic understanding of websites and python.

Specifically about websites one should know that content is laid out in HTML and JavaScript allows dynamic things that may alter HTML. Also useful but not required, how requests are sent back and forth from a user client to a web server.

Specifically about python one should know how to load and use functions from a module and how to install new modules.

The book gives a world wind tour of the process and existing python tools to enable: web crawling (how to grab html content from a server) and
web scraping (how to extract actual data from the content)

The first two chapters introduce the basic web scraping scenario and the later chapters introduce complications to the process and tools/approaches to handle them.

The book provides a great high level idea of web scraping and provides a self contained python starter kit to get up and running. It’s a short read at 175 pages with very accessible content with links to get more detailed documentation. The site also offers a practice website to try out scraping techniques.

I came to the book with previous exposure to various python web scraping tools that I pieced together from the web (from tutorials, blogs, stackoverflow). I really enjoyed the self contained nature of the whole web scraping process that the book provides. This book would have saved me a LOT of time and pain had it been available when I got started with web scraping. Having said that, I still learned a few things – specifically the CAPTCHA tools and some basic utilities that I can employ in my day to day python.

I recommend this book for anyone who is just starting out with web scraping or is already familiar with scraping but wants to learn how to employ python to the cause. Once you read the book, there is significant opportunity to explore the individual tools further.

A Smorgasbord of scraping techniques.

If you are looking for ways to automatically gather and curate data off of webpages, this book is probably for you. There is a chapter on scrapy, a chapter on dealing with CAPTCHA, a chapter on handling dynamic (ie javascript based) pages, and a chapter on concurrent downloads, plus a few others covering housekeeping details like parsing scraped pages and caching. All in all, a book that provides a broad foundation on web scraping.

About the Author

Vishram S. Pandit is a technical lead in the Signal/Power Integrity Engineering team at Intel Corporation. He works on developing power delivery designs for high-speed interfaces. His focus areas include high-speed system power delivery, on-chip power delivery, and Signal/ Power Integrity co-design. Prior to Intel he worked at Hughes Network Systems on Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), power integrity, and signal integrity technologies. He has received a B.E. (Instrumentation) from College of Engineering, Pune, India, an M.S. (Electrical Engineering) from University of Utah, USA, and an Advanced Certificate for Post-Master’s Study (Computer Science) from Johns Hopkins University, USA. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of the CPMT Technical Committee on Electrical Design, Modeling and Simulation; and he serves as a technical program committee member for DesignCon. Power Integrity is becoming increasingly important in today’s high-speed digital I/O systems. The cover of this book gives a high-level summary of its system impact. It shows an electronic system with a Printed Circut Board (PCB), a daughter card, and their layer stackup. A driver chip is mounted on the PCB and a receiver chip is mounted on the daughter card. The expanded view of the power grid of the driver chip is also shown. The receiver jitter impact is due to Power Delivery (PD) to signal coupling, and there are different coupling mechanisms. Self impedance response of the PDN at the driver chip shows a resonance in the mid-frequency range. The PD to signal coupling response at the driver chip follows the PDN self impedance response. The jitter at the receiver follows a similar signature at those frequencies when the transmission line effect is negligible. The PD to signal coupling at the package to PCB interface increases as the frequency goes higher. The channel response shows resonances at high frequencies, due to impedance discontinuities. The power to signal coupling noise can get amplified due to the channel effects and resonances. This, in turn, gets translated into jitter at the receiver at high frequencies. Referencing scheme, such as dual referencing, also causes the PD to signal coupling.

Intended audience for this book is Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) Engineers (On-chip, package, and PCB designers). It can also be used by graduate students who want to pursue careers in these fields. Overall discussion level is beginner to intermediate; however, some advanced topics are also discussed. There may be different designers working on specific components, such as on-chip or package or PCB. However, this book presents power integrity design techniques along with power-to-signal coupling mechanisms at various stages in the system, such as chip level coupling and interconnect level coupling. This will give the component SI or PI engineers a perspective of system level impact of power integrity, and enable them to proactively design the system to avoid possible problem areas and also to identify the root-cause, in case of any system problems.

Chapter 1, “Introduction,” describes digital electronic systems and gives a high-level overview of the PDN and signal network. It describes signal and power integrity effects on system performance and highlights power noise to signal coupling mechanisms. Finally, it addresses the need for concurrent SI/PI design methodology.

Chapter 2, “I/O Interfaces,” describes basic Input Output interfaces. The currents in power node generate noise that is basis of power integrity effects for I/O interfaces. This chapter addresses details of single-ended and differential drivers and receivers. Single-ended and differential interfaces produce different current profiles in the PDN, and their dependency on the bit pattern is also different. The PDN current flows are demonstrated with corresponding noise.

Chapter 3, “Electromagnetic Effects,” discusses the electromagnetic (EM) theory and how it is important in signal integrity, power integrity and ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) analysis. It begins with basic Maxwell’s equations, and addresses transmission line theory and interconnect network parameters (Z, Y, S). It also describes Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems and their properties.

Chapter 4, “System Interconnects,” addresses the entire path for power and signal propagation, including the chip, package, and PCB. It gives an overview of the PCB technology and different package types. In the PDN section it describes PCB PDN components (DC/DC converter, PCB capacitors, PCB planes, vias, and so forth), package PDN, and on-chip PDN components (intentional/unintentional capacitors, and power-grid). In the signal network section, it describes PCB signal propagation with microstrip, stripline, and coupled line. It also addresses the package and on-chip signal networks. Then, it states the coupling mechanism from the PDN to signal network. Finally, it addresses modeling tools for the PDN and signal networks.

Chapter 5, “Frequency Domain Analysis,” begins with Fourier transform and its properties. It lists the key frequency domain design parameters for signal integrity and power integrity applications. It then addresses frequency domain PDN design with Z11 impedance target. It utilizes chip, package, and PCB co-design approach for the PDN design. Some important frequency domain concepts in the PDN design, such as voltage transfer function, SSO in frequency domain, and power to signal coupling, are illustrated. The next section describes the frequency domain signal network analysis and its correlation. A case study for “crosstalk amplification by resonance” is discussed in detail. The signal network analysis is performed with the PDN and on-chip parameters (on-die termination, pad capacitor, and so on) taken into account. Differential signaling parameters in frequency domain are also presented.

Chapter 6, “Time Domain Analysis,” begins with describing the necessary components for the time domain simulations. It addresses various kinds of buffer models used in signal integrity and power integrity analysis. Next, it describes the time domain PDN specifications, and simulation flow to achieve the specifications. Different examples of single ended drivers and differential drivers are presented for AC noise analysis. Next, the concept of chip level driver noise coupling on the signal is discussed. It shows examples of the jitter analysis due to the PDN noise, for single ended and differential interfaces.

Chapter 7, “Signal/Power Integrity Interactions,” is devoted to unintended interactions between power/ground and signals, which has become an important consideration for optimizing high-bandwidth I/O signaling scheme. Power noise coupling can be amplified through channel resonance. It describes the power noise amplification mechanism that is due to a combination of three factors: SSO generation, power to signal coupling, and signal channel resonance. Then two case studies are demonstrated: DDR2-800 control bus resonance problem and DDR2667 Vref bus noise issue. Next, it describes the referencing/stitching/and decoupling effects for single ended and differential interfaces.

Chapter 8, “Signal/Power Integrity Co-Analysis,” addresses the eye-margin analysis with SI-PI co-simulations. It describes the basic elements for the cosimulations: buffer models, 3D EM models for package and PCB, on-chip PDN models, and so on. The simulation deck is constructed and the worst case pattern is identified. Full-time domain simulations are performed with ISI, crosstalk, and SSO analysis; and response decomposition techniques are illustrated. The linear interaction indicator between power and signal is defined and evaluated for single ended and differential interfaces.

Chapter 9, “Measurement Techniques,” covers the frequency domain and time domain measurement techniques for validating signal/power integrity, in high-speed I/O signaling. The theory and some applications of the enhanced 2-port VNA technique for low impedance power delivery network characterization are discussed in the first part of this chapter. It also describes the on-chip interconnect and pad capacitance characterization techniques. In addition, it presents S-parameter measurement-based extraction methods to obtain the high-frequency SPICE model, with microwave network analysis and parametric optimization. Next, it describes the time domain characterization techniques. It includes Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) measurement, PDN noise measurement, SSO coupling measurement, and jitter measurement.

Below par in application and theory

Here's this book in a nutshell. "It tries to cover forecasting techniques theories while using a basic tool like excel, but in doing so it doesnt do justice to either theory OR excel".

The book is "ok" until simple linear regression, and after that it does no justice to theory and barely uses any excel. To give an example, I didnt see any excel based examples for multiple regression even though ANOVA is a feature under data analysis in excel and ANOVA was covered by the author (at least in theory) ... net, the author fails in application and even the theory was under par.

I was reading this book to decide if it can be recommended for a small business owner who may not have the budget for expensive analytical tools such as SAS or SPSS. If you are building your forecast based on time series analysis, then this book may have some value to offer ... but if you are looking to forecast based on independent variables other than time, then you've got to look elsewhere.

This is a good book to help forecasters learn the very basics of the skill in excel. However, I was looking for a more in-depth explanation of the box-Jenkins forecasting method ARIMA process. Specifically, how to construct an MA(1), MA(2),... The book did not meet my expectations.

An unfortunately flawed introduction.

As a programmer, when I first read this book through I thought that it wasn't the best written of the Dummies books, but it was a reasonable introduction that gave a good overview of some of the basics. However, having seen people with no experience of programming at all try to work their way through this book, I've also noticed that the author has sometimes failed to really explain himself in the clear and thorough way that the Dummies books are so good at, and has lost sight of who the book should be aimed at - people with NO experience of programming at all.

My biggest gripe of all is with the use of variable names, on two counts. Firstly, he'll sometimes use variable names that simply won't make any sense - names that have absolutely nothing to do with what the variable is actually being used for within the code. While this doesn't cause a problem with programming, and certainly won't confuse an experienced programmer within such simple coding, it can completely throw people who haven't used a programming language before - it adds unnecessary confusion to code that's mainly intended for complete beginners.

It's also a bad introduction to naming conventions for anyone who'll write code for others to use, as people SHOULD try to make their choices of variable names make sense. It's a bad idea even if nobody else EVER reads it, because if you decide to come back to your code after a year, who knows if you'll still remember what "boing" was supposed to be?

The second issue I have is that he'll repeat the confusion for newcomers by sometimes naming things too similarly. Experienced programmers, again, won't have a problem with this; but for the newcomers who're trying to become familiar with the language, it can confuse them - this is made more likely by the fact that many will already be struggling to come to terms with the code they're working through. Having a variable called test$ and a routine called [test] may seem fine to experienced programmers, but when test$ is actually the value of a radio button, there are much plainer and easier names that the variable could have been given to help avoid confusion for the novice programmer. It could simply have been thought through better, and more consideration should have been given with regard to who this book was intended for.

When compared to some of the other Dummies texts, most of which people could work through from top to bottom without needing much or any assistance, this one falls short of the mark. Beyond just the confusion created by bad choices of names for variables and functions, some of the explanations are unclear - or leave some elements completely unexplained - leaving the unfamiliar programmer out of their depth, with no experience to call on to deduce what the commands or code may actually be doing.

In the end, I simply wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn programming from scratch on their own. With some help, it provides a place for programmers to build, but too often the people I've seen work through this have ended up FEELING like Dummies as they became baffled and lost off by the book's sometimes careless style.

I just finished a course in object-oriented programming (Java) as part of a master's program in information systems management. Yeah, I aced it, but not without a lot of help from professional programmers. Trouble was, I couldn't understand Java because I had no programming experience; even the textbook, Head First Java, assumes prior programming experience. HFJ read like the proverbial Greek. (Trust, I will let my school know they need to revamp this part of the program.)

Now, I'm doing a course related to software frameworks, so this program isn't gonna get any easier.

So I went out and bought Beginning Programming for Dummies, and it hasn't disappointed. It clearly breaks down the languages BASIC, Revolution and C++, and presents the fundamentals of logic and programming in an uncomplicated way. This book is one giant ephiphany. "Oh, that's was a string is! Wow, is that was .NET is designed to do? Holy moly, loops are really that simple?" Before reading this, I had no idea that programs in differing langugages could be stored on Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files and linked together into a larger program using Visual Basic. I'd heard of DLLs, but had no idea what they were.

I work for an IT integration firm in an administrative position, and now I feel like what this company does has been somewhat demystified.

I usually don't comment on books on this site, but if you want to get a good overview what computer programming is all about before you delve into the programming language of your choice, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
