Introduction to Design and Analysis of Experiments (Textbooks in Mathematical Sciences), by George W. Cobb

The aim of this textbook is to provide an applied introduction to statistics, and in particular to the design and analysis of experiments for students with no background in the subject. The author sets forth these goals: a strong emphasis on choosing sound design structures prior to a formal discussion of ANOVA; explore real data sets using a variety of graphs and numerical methods; testing the assumptions behind standard ANOVA texts; and so on. The text is quantitatively accessible: more difficult algebraic discussions are contained in optional sections. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the contextual understanding and interpretation of data analysis rather than stressing formal deductive, mathematical reasoning.

From the Back Cover
Data analysis is an interpretive activity. George Cobb's goals in Introduction to Design and Analysis of Experiments are to explain how to choose sound and suitable design structures and to engage the student misunderstanding the interpretive and constructive nature of data analysis and experimental design. Developed over years of classroom use, this text can be used as an introduction to statistics emphasizing experimental design. Technical prerequisites are kept to a minimum. It can also be used as an elementary graduate survey course.

Cobb's approach and careful exposition allow students to build a deep understanding of Statistical concepts over time as they analyze and design experiments. He presents the Statistics concepts over time as they analyze and design experiments. he presents the field of statistics to students as a matrix, rather than ahierarchy, of related concepts.

This text introduces the main concepts of Statistical thinking in the context of experimental design and ANOVA, allowing the material to be covered in half of the usual time.

Introduction to Design and Analysis of Experiments was originally published by Springer-Verlag, New York and is now being reprinted by Key College Publishing. It is available for sale from either publisher.

good elementary treatment of experimental design
By Michael R. Chernick
Many good books on experimental designs are avaialble. Nost are written on an advanced level and others either have an agricultural or an engineering orientation. This book by Cobb is different. It is excellently written on an elementary level and it covers basic principles involved with designs before delving into specific details.

Excellent book
By brettware5
This book is a great book, I am using it for my Stat 230 class and it is very easy to read compared to other textbooks that I have used in the past. If you are trying to learn about experiments give this book a try.

Avoid this textbook
By Jeff Stephens
Easily the worst textbook I have ever had. Many of our assignments were modified to accommodate the errors in the textbook. Finding information was very difficult, and the author would regularly refer to experiments a few hundred pages before without any page references. Most of the problems were vague as to what they wanted for answers, and I felt that several answers could be justified in many instances. The author didn't include any answers in the back, further increasing the difficulty in understanding what they wanted. I often had to go to the TA not because I didn't understand the material, but because I didn't know which answer they wanted.
