Best basic introduction to R

I've acquired quite a few introductions to, and expositions of, R. Among them all, I consider Sarah Stowell's "Instant R" to be the best introduction to R for the general reader or student. Individual steps are laid out and explained in an unusually helpful fashion.

The book begins by covering basic descriptive statistics, including a variety of plots. It goes on to cover the basic statistical tests treated in the usual first semester course in inferential statistics: e.g., Pearson and Spearman correlation, t-tests, ANOVA, rank-sum tests, linear and multiple regression, chi-square goodness-of-fit test, chi-square test of association, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

I even gave a copy of this book to a young single mother whom my wife and I know and admire because she works full time while simultaneously being a part-time student pursuing her Registered Nurse certification. This woman has also found Stowell's book to be a very helpful introduction to R, and feels that it has helped her earn her grade of "A" as of mid-semester in her statistics course.

Clear and detailed

I purchased this book as a supplement to a population modeling course that uses R extensively. I was happy to see that it assumes the reader has no experience in using R whatsoever, and is as clear as possible about how to enter code. They do assume some minor knowledge in writing script, and some basic computer programming experience (even just HTML) is useful. The book is laid out in a format that resembles some of my automotive textbooks from a vocational program at community college, and as a result is easy to follow. I like the lists of commands at the end of the chapters, and have referred to those often.

Yes.

One of my all time favorite series, only hindered by its teen audience. I felt this book series could have truly become a cult classic if written from a slightly darker more adult and mature side.

The message of the entire series is just phenomonal. An example of the human spirit at its finest.

The author does a great job of giving you more questions than answers in the first 9 books, keeping you hooked.

Dropping the bomb on book 10. All answers answered, all loose ends tied, everything resolved. The perfect ending. The last chapter of book 10 had me almost in tears of joy it was so fitting and so perfect.

You become so attached to the characters by the end of the book it's hard to let them go when you stop reading; yet still feel their presence in yourself. In halla.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading, period.

As long as you can get over the fact it's written for teens, and try to put it into a more mature perspective yourself, it will be one of your favorites for sure.

Now comon hollywood I want to see this turn into a movie, and I want it to be amazing!

Nice set, arrived well, story is okay

My eleven year old son had the first book and asked for the second as a Christmas gift. Buying the set and having two first books was more economical than buying individual paperbacks.

The story and writing are pretty good and my 11-year-old and 13-year-old sons enjoyed them.

This is a modern actioner and, for an actioner, is well but not superbly constructed. The vocabulary is approachable for young readers. The plot keeps your attention and stimulates imagination. There isn't a lot of imagery and the prose is modern with restricted vocabulary. This is a negative for mature readers but not for an elementary school reader. The characters are pre-teens to young teens who interact with adults who are mentors. The villain is an adult.

McHale narrates characters' thoughts about their feelings and their questions about ethics and motives. These narratives build in complexity over the series. This helps younger readers to improve introspection skills by seeing examples of teenage "self-talk." The narratives seem approachable by readers who are still concrete thinkers. Exposing young readers to exploration of more abstract moral concepts in this fashion is brilliant.

As an adult, I was interested enough to read all the books without setting them aside. I rated it less than five stars because I like more imagery and vocabulary and personally don't like modern actioners. I rated it more than three stars because my sons did not stop reading before the end. My eleven year old would probably give it a 5.

Informative and interesting

As a piano teacher, I have been on the lookout for the perfect piano series for a long time.

The Music Tree has been the series I constantly return to. I have tried "Piano Adventures" and other books, but I find that the way this book teaches notes and rhythms helps students like no other.

Learning the songs in these books take effort, but kids learn their piano very well. The president of the college I take piano lessons from uses this series and highly recommends it.

Use the Music Tree. You will be grateful that you did.

Great beginner series

The Music Tree books cover each of the important aspects of piano tuition - technique, theory, composition, transposition and of course a wonderful collection of pieces.
My students really enjoy improvising with the interesting accompaniments. These are fun for the teacher too!
Part 2A contains new concepts such as major and minor triads, pedal use and eighth notes.

Hooks's essays on film are not film criticism: they are criticism of culture as viewed through the prism of film. This mix of theory, reality, popular art and popular criticism (reviews and public reaction play a large part in her discussions) is effective in forcing a rethinking of the films in question. A reading of reviews of Exotica shows that only the strip-joint portions of the movie were considered worthy of commentary. Quentin Tarantino?a filmmaker "not afraid to publicly pimp his wares"?is taken to task for ingesting superficial aspects of black culture and spitting out the rest. The "mock feminism" of Waiting to Exhale ("an utterly boring show") is exposed as hooks examines differences between the book and the movie. The essays that do not focus on a single film are equally successful: a discussion of the black female gaze recalls that slaves could be punished for looking, and another on representations of black masculinity notes that in movies with two male leads, one black and one white, such as Rising Sun, the white man plays the "father" role. The essays could have benefited from more thoughtful organization. Hooks refers to her first-ever film-related essay, on Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, in her introduction and elsewhere, but the essay does not appear until the final pages of the book. A piece on the accountability of filmmakers that involves Wayne Wang would have matched up nicely with a dialogue with Wang, which instead is sandwiched in a group of interviews with Arthur Jaffa, Camille Billops and the like.

An excellent book that really gives you something to think about as she examines race, sex and class in America through the movies. I really enjoyed reading her feminist views, and her interviews with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Camille Billops, and AJ (Arthur Jafa).

Long overdue, this well written, easy-to-follow SES application guide and workbook can make the difference between success and failure for those seeking SES positions. Good overview but you will need a lot more to have have hope of a successful application.

No offense to the authors intended. Everything in this book, of substance, is available for free (and more current) at opm.gov - the US Government's own website that contains the background rules and regulations for USAJobs.com - which is the USG's only portal into Federal hiring below the Presidential Appointment level. Where the book really falls short is the limited to zero discussion of all the various "backdoor" programs that lead to SES appointments. In DCMA alone, there are at least three pathways. While the book is of good information and the searchable CD (which replicates the book) is a nice feature; I do not believe, based on my own applications, that the examples are fully on point or comprehensive enough to submit an SES application with a high probability of success. The SES training pathways programs are so highly competitive, that extensive understanding and word-smithing of the application requires the latest OPM guidelines which this edition (nor can any traditional book) can achieve simply due to the mechanics of publishing. It is a good overview, but I do not think anyone would have a successful application using just guide.

Best Book for SES Prep

This book is an easy to read, understand and follow guide that includes exercises that are very helpful in preparing your resume, ECQs and TQs for SES positions in the federal government. All the information, the process and the necessary background to these positions are included in the book. The CD is an extra bonus and is well worth purchasing the book alone.

The details and realistic instruction help you understand that you may have to chart a path to the SES rather than apply straight away for SES jobs. This book helps you to do that. I found it to be the most comprehesive and helpful book on the subject.

James E. (Jim) Phelan received his doctorate degree in Psychology (Psy.D) from the Southern California University for Professional Studies and his master s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Marywood University. Jim is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD) and a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CADAC). He is a Psychotherapist Associate to the American Psychoanalytic Association, Mental Health Affiliate to the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and Scientific Advisory Member to the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH). He is also a military veteran having served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Since 1994, Jim has specialized in therapy, consultation, and research particular to male same-sex attraction and presently has a private practice in Columbus, Ohio.

A much needed, excellent workbook

At a time when the PC Nazis are trying to control our every word, not to mention our every thought, James E. Phalen's book may seem, at first glance, to be anachronistic. His workbook for men who are unhappy with their homosexuality or bisexuality will certainly be offensive to those in the Gay Rights Movement. However, to those who are gay and bisexual and do not want to be, his book provides some rare and welcome support. The Gay Rights Movement has tried to ban psychotherapy for men who want to change from gay or bisexual to straight; I think that is reverse discrimination, and so does James Phelan. He has put together a very practical workbook that guides men who have an unwanted same sex attraction. The book begins with some questionnaires to help men better understand their sexuality, then goes on to provide an array of fill-in-the-blank forms and exercises to help readers find a mentor, figure out how they allow others to violate their boundaries, assess their current sexual behavior, explore childhood influences, forgive those who have been harmful, and understand primary relations with father, mother, sister, brother. It also helps men get in touch with and understand their feelings, including anger, sadness and shame, and points the way toward resolution through the use of guided imagery, diary writing and other exercises. The appendix contains suggested readings and other helpful resources. I tried some of the exercises myself and found them illuminating, even though I don't have have unwanted same-sex desires. This is a brave book that goes against the current PC trend and offers much needed guidance to the hundreds of thousands of men who are having a hard time finding support for their cause. If you are one of them, I highly recommend this book.

Ridiculous, Dangerous Pseudoscience...

This book is full of some of the most dangerous pseudo-science on the topic of homosexuality ever printed. The incestuous relationship between the major players in the anti-gay "Gay Conversion Therapy" movement is as obvious as it is laughable. N.A.R.T.H. founder Joseph Nicolosi and Exodus International President Alan Chambers (who recently denounced these practices and apologized for his group's involvement) are quoted, with plenty of product placement by Richard Cohen (do an Internet search for his "Holding Therapy" for a good laugh).

The "Practical Exercises" in this book include keeping a masturbation diary, drawing pictures of your "gay self" and your "straight self," and repeated suggestions that what they refer to as "Same-Sex Attractions" are created by a father who was distant and uncaring toward you, as well as a mother who was too close and protective (the opposite for women, of course). None of this has been taken seriously by psychologists or other mental health professionals for over a century.

Also troubling is the persistent religious theme found throughout the book; reputable psychotherapists leave their own religious and/or spiritual beliefs on the other side of their office door, allowing the client to decide whether such beliefs are relevant to her or his progress. The weaving of spirituality in this tome leaves one with the distinct impression that it's contents are only an extension of the "pray the gay away" tactics used by earlier groups in the 1970s.

Buy this only USED, and only as an archival example of what can go wrong when ideology supplants science in the struggle to deal with a society becoming more and more open to diversity in sex and sexual orientation.

History not taught in American school.

I thought this was an excellent view of Spain, not found in American schools. We learn such a narrow vision of history when taught by the conquerors.

Truth Hurts

This book is excellent and very enlightening, despite what some of the critics say. It discusses many hisorical things, such as a Moor named Tarif, who played a significant role in the Moors' conquering of Spain. It also talks about the many positive contributions the Moors brought to Spain after their conquest.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Caucasians will constantly go to great lengths to take credit for any major and significant civilizations/empires, events, or creations in history. Their pseudo sense of superiority is so dependent upon their view of blacks as inferior that they feel threatened by anything that challenges that identity or reveals otherwise. As a result, they try to manipulate, scoff at, and discredit anything to uphold their beliefs and pseudo-identity. It's been acceptable for people of African descent to be taught and to accept the false belief that the world and universe revolves around Caucasians. Yet, to give Blacks even an ounce of credit in that world/universe is too much for the egos of many Caucasians to accept/handle, even those with supposedly "good intentions." Nevertheless, the obvious lack of credit to people of African descent for any constructive contribution (not slavery) to history is a red flag as NO group has existed on this planet without having some positive influence or impact. And you will not convince me that Africans have existed in that part of the world for centuries without having civilizations, government, inventions, culture, etc. The author of this book has done a great job in depicting the identity of the Black Moors, as well as their contribution to Europe and history in general.

When it was FINALLY realized that the Egyptians couldn't have been Caucasian, some Caucasians decided to consciously incorporate the present-day phenotypically lighter Arabs (but with a genotype revealing African heritage) as White, as they have done with many other groups over the years. God forbid that black people be credited with building pyramids, being kings and queens, inventing things, dominating, etc., right? Are you truly going to convince me that those people, who have lived in that part of the world side-by-side and mixed for CENTURIES, with both faint and strong African features, do not have African heritage? As Caucasians in America feel they are the minority, they will consciously and unconsciously incorporate a new group as white. Welcome Latinos/Hispanics (those light enough to be deemed acceptable) and Asians.

The constant audacity of Caucasians, especially Americans, whose "civilization" (let's speak honestly) has basically existed FAR LESS longer than those in AFRICA, Asia, and the Middle East, to try to be more "experts" about the aforementioned regions' history, than the people within those specific regions or civilizations is baffling. What's funny is, despite all the manipulating of history that's been done, the truth continues to come to the surface, specifically from a source that's been present all the time: DNA.

You can play as gods, but you will never be God.

Classic text. Poor Introduction.

Stanley Lane Pool's book is a classic example of the Reinhardt Dozy school of scholarship in the field of Hispano-Arabic studies. However, the introduction by Stanley Jackson is extremley misleading. The term Moor is not meant to denote black Africans, it was a term used by Christians to describe the Muslim inhabitants of Iberia not any specific racial group. The Arabs which crossed the straits of Gibralter into Iberia were originally from the Arabian peninsula. Also, they did not make up the majority of the troops who invaded Spain. The majority of the Islamic peoples who came to Iberia were north African Berbers of what anthropologists classify as the Hamitic branch of the caucasoid race. Furthermore, the indigenous Iberians always outnumbered the Arab, Berber and black African contingent. The Indigenous Iberians were simply islamized, adopted the Arab culture and were thus called Moors by the Christians. It was not until the coming of the Almoravid empire which arrived in Iberia in the 12th Century, where large numbers of black Africans came to Iberia, being that the Almoravids (al-murabitun) originated from present day Senegal and southern Morocco. Black Africans did make very important contirbutions to Iberian history, such as the great medieval, Spanish linguist Juan Latino who helped unify the Castillian language, however, he was a freed slave and a Christian not a Moor. To say that the Moors were of any specific racial group as Stanley Jackson posits is misleading and irresponsible pseudo-scholarship.
