At the young age of six, Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath, one of the greatest saints of modern times, had a vision of Lord Shiva. All the leading lights of the day such as Sufi Pir Inayat Vilayat Khan, the Buddhist Dalai Lama, Ma Anandmayi, Daya Ma of the Yogoda Satsanga, the Nepali Baba, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and other mystics, experienced divine bliss on contact with Him. And then when I was working my way through the papers of the American poet Jack Spicer, I found out that on his deathbed he kept a few books on chess, among them this book, in its 1957 incarnation which looks pretty much the same as this one except the chess pieces are all shadowed in a thick claret-like red instead of the cool blue we have now.

I decided to get a replica of Spicer's copy and see if I could follow it and somehow see how he (Spicer) used chess, and in particular the legend of Paul Morphy, in his extremely difficult poetry. He was attracted I think to Morphy in the same way as he found Rimbaud so intriguing: in both cases an exhibition of brilliance, nearly of genius, while both men were very young, teenagers I guess, and then only a few years later a renunciation so extreme it amounted to burn-out, a psychic fatigue. Sergeant's annotations I find helpful, as well as his reasoned and well-argued account of Morphy's rise and fall as a grand master. What makes us turn away from the thing we do best, and go into trade? At least Rimbaud had reason to enter the mercantile world, for he was a poor boy and needed money for his family. But Morphy apparently was a scion of American aristocracy and would be counted a millionaire in today's money.

I found it interesting that they were annotating his games when he was a mere 13 years of age! AND that the games he played in blindfolds were among his best. If chess relies as much on memory as computers do, perhaps it would not matter to a clear brain like Morphy's how many games he was playing at once (in London he played five men simultaneously, two wins, two losses, one draw)--not exactly bukkake by the standards of today, but as Sergeant reminds us, he was playing the absolute top masters of his time. I love the idea of Game LXXIX, the opera house game, played in the royal box of the Duke of Brunswick at the Paris Opera House during a performance of Rossini! You can practically hear the triumphantly comic strains of THE BARBER OF SEVILLE in the air as you read the long columns of Morphy's assault. (He won of course.)

Morphy - No better player to learn from!

Before we go any further, I want you to know I am a Chess Master and I teach chess for a living.
All my students who have purchased this book have loved it.
All the great teachers of the game (GM L. Evans, SM Ken Smith, IM Silman, GM Soltis, GM Alburt; etc.) say you must FIRST master tactics before you can do anything else. This is the MANDATORY first step in the game of chess.
The best way to learn and master TACTICS is to study the OPEN GAMES. In my own opinion, there is no better way to do this than to study the games of Paul Morphy very carefully. (I personally believe Morphy was - easily - the greatest chess player who ever lived. See my web page on "The Greatest Chess Players" for more details.)
The games in this book are well written and easily understood by any class of player. The author did a great job here, and this probably remains the best book - dollar for dollar - on Morphy.
And in case you think these moves are easy to find, I once tested some of these moves on a GM ... who was approximately 18 months away from winning the U.S. Championship ... and he failed to find some of the moves that Morphy found quickly and easily!
The story in here is good, the games are great. Paul Morphy's games are the best vehicle for mastering the basics of chess. They are also very beautiful.
If you buy this book AND play through a few of the games - I personally guarantee you will not be disappointed with it. (And if you are, you can sell it on e-bay for almost what you paid for it.)
Come on! What else do I have to say? I make all my students study Morphy. I promise you will get better. GET THIS BOOK!!

Frustrating and poorly organized

This one's going back. They need an editor. On nearly every page the Figures that illustrate what's being described are on the opposite or next page?! Screenshots are not clear, and there are no helpful images showing where the drop-down menus are or zoomed-in shots to help locate tools, menus, or settings. This is a book that was rushed to press and it looks like it. I bought it because the T of C looked comprehensive and the review seemed positive. Turns out it was probably written by the publisher. Spend your money on another manual.

Over that last three decades I have bought dozens of computer books. Most have been graphic design. If I put all the books in a pile from best at the top to worst at the bottom I would have to dig a hole to place this book. I just started learning Maya and you say this book is for beginners who need help navigating the gigantic cacophony of menus that make up this wonderful software. Ok so you tell me to select Animate Ghost Selected Options menu. Ok so how am I going to find that command???? You cant add one simple sentence to guide me to find this command. Throughout this entire book I spend hours wandering thru the menus of Maya trying to find the one simple click on your tutorials when all you had to do is add a few words to guide me. And all the pics for the tutorials are on the next page. You have to flip back and forth!! Ok so I have never posted a bad review on anything in my life because I believe that tolerance is a virtue. But this lack of effort or respect to people who are trying to better themselves in the creative, graphics world has motivated me to express my frustration. Oh yea you also wasted my hard earned money!!!! Sorry!!

About the Author
Dan Smith took up the post of Secretary General of International Alert in December 2003, coming from a distinguished research career that led to active involvement in peace processes. He was Director of the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) from 1993 to 2001 and led PRIO into active engagement in conflict resolution. He both established projects and worked directly on negotiation and dialogue in a number of areas including the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. Before PRIO, he was Associate Director of the Transnational Institute (Amsterdam) 1988-1991 and Director 1991-1993, He has also held research positions at the Richardson Institute for Peace & Conflict Research; at Birkbeck College, London; at the Norwegian Nobel Institute; and at the Hellenic Foundation for Foreign & European Policy in Athens. Dan was Chair of the Board at the London-based Institute for War & Peace Reporting from 1992 to 2006 and is today a member of the UN Peace building Fund's Advisory Board. Dan is the author/co-author of 10 books including successive editions The State of the World Atlas and The Atlas of War and Peace, as well as over 100 journal articles and chapters in anthologies. His most recent major work is The State of the Middle East, published in October 2006.

Amazingly effective!

This book isn’t just about the WODs. The author focus on what Cross Training is, workout frequency, implementing a weekly or monthly training plan, and the often overlooked warm ups (Preparations) and cool downs. This book will not only introduce you to this amazingly effective and often transformative sport, but it offers you 100 sample workouts to choose from.

This handbook has been produced with the express purpose of helping you get the dream body that you’ve always wanted by using the safest, quickest and healthiest methods available in the world of modern cross training. Cross Training involves activities that’ll help you build muscle and improve your performance. Really Helpful in Staying Healthy!

Great book but I personally think that men should read this more likely than women.The book was very organized and has different sections for whatever part that you want to work out. I do a lot of cardio but now I'm losing weight so I need to start toning. I've heard of some of these exercise, but it's nice to get a reminder of what I need to be doing.Honestly,I purchase this book for my husband but after I checked on the exercise instruction,I become interested.So now me and my hubby are doing 1 hour cross training ones a week.
