Good reference

This is a good reference for the C# developers who want to get a good overview of the C# framework and architecture.

Every time I read a book like this, I ask myself "will this book improve my programming skills and understanding?"

I am certain this book will improve programming understanding for everyone. Yet, I am not sure if it will really improve programming skills. The book has no programming exercises that helps the reader to inculcate the knowledge contained in this book into a solid learning experience.

Furthermore, the book doesn't get too much into algorithms. I can't say this is the best C# book I have ever read. But I can still recommend this book based on high quality writing and knowledge about practical C# programming explanations.

Pros:
1)Good explanations of C# framework and architecture.
2)Short and succinct.
3)Good programmatic examples.

Cons:
1)No programming exercises.
2)Very light on programmatic algorithms.

About the Author
Heinz Weihrich is Professor of Global Management and Behavioral Sciences at the University of San Francisco. He received his doctorate from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and an honorary doctorate from San Martin de Porres University of Lima, Peru. He was a visiting scholar at the University of California in Berkeley and Harvard Business School. His fields of work are management, international management, and behavioral science. Dr Weihrich has taught at Arizona State University, at UCLA, and in various places such as Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand. He was also a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Business in Zurich, Switzerland, at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, and at Peking University in Beijing. Harold Koontz was active as a business and government executive, university professor, company board chairperson and director, management consultant, lecturer to the top management of organizations worldwide, and an author. From 1950 he was Professor of Management and from 1962 Mead Johnson Professor of Management' at UCLA; from 1978 to 1982 he was World Chancellor at the International Academy of Management. He was the author or coauthor of 19 books and 90 journal articles, including this book, which was originally called Principles of Management. His Board of Directors and Effective Management was given the Academy of Management Book Award in 1968.

This fourth edition captures the significant advances which have been made in the subject of dental traumatology, since the publication of the last edition more than a decade ago. The comprehensive nature of the book is designed to appeal to distinguished clinicians and scholars of dental traumatology, whether they be oral surgeons, pediatric dentists, endodontists, or from a related specialist community.

Long considered the “gold standard” book on the subject, the fourth edition builds on this reputation and presents the definitive standards in the field. The role of established clinical therapies has been vigorously updated. New chapters have been added to reflect esthetic procedures including bleaching of discolored teeth, and the use of minimally invasive veneers. Other topics new for consideration in this volume include: the optimization of pulp and periodontal healing, splinting of teeth, and the use of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) in endodontic interventions.

Clinical treatment is put into context with coverage on prevention of traumatic injuries, cost-benefit considerations, and psycho-social aspects of dental trauma. Prognosis is carefully discussed, and is presented along with information specially designed for dissemination to patients and third parties.

Essential reading, though imperfect

The first thing I want to say is this: If you plan on doing regression analysis in your research, stop what you are doing, and read this book first. I think this book represents THE current statement on how we should use regression. For Angrist and Pischke, regression is a technology for summarizing data. If regression is to be used for causal inference, then there is nothing in the specification of the model or the choice of estimator that can ultimately make the causal story persuasive. That is, you don't identify causal effects simply by including "control" variables in your regression. The identification comes from elsewhere---either a real or "quasi" experiment---and the regression is what you use to clean up the imperfections of the experiment and measure effects. Angrist and Pischke have done an enormous service to social science by writing a regression textbook that nonetheless emphasizes the primacy of design. This is a terrific corrective for the "101 flavors of regression" approach of textbooks to date.

Even with this emphasis on design, Angrist and Pischke show us that are a lot of nuances to the way that regressions measure such effects---e.g., in the presence of effect heterogeneity---and that's what this book explores in exquisite detail. It's a hugely important book and a very serious and rigorous treatment, despite it's apparently causal style. They make some claims that may strike some as outrageous---e.g., always using OLS, even for limited dependent variables---but the rigor of their presentation means that the onus is on those who disagree to think harder about why, exactly, they would prefer, say, a more parametric approach.

Nonetheless, it isn't a "5 star" book. It often feels a bit rough-draft-like. The presentation of technical material skips important steps rather haphazardly. I wonder if this was due to bad editing? Hopefully there will be a second edition that cleans up these rough edges, in which case it would be the ideal textbook on regression analysis.

Mixes issues

In their introduction Angrist and Pischke say "empirical research is most valuable when it uses data to answer specific causal questions, as if in a randomized clinical trial". The book aims to teach this approach to students of applied econometrics.

The emphasis on natural experiments and quasi-experiments which the authors espouse has become influential in some sub-areas of econometrics and the authors, particularly Angrist, have played a leading role in this development. However, this approach is not uncontroversial. The Journal of Economic Perspectives has an entire issue (Spring 2010, Vol. 24, No. 2, full text online for public) discussing the pros and cons and you may want to glance through it before buying this book.

Taken on its own terms, the book intermingles four levels of discussion: the philosophical and methodological issues around causality, tips and tricks on how the apply the workhorse models of (micro)econometrics, case studies, and the mathematical properties of models and estimators. This intermingling may be useful for a practitioner trying to see the big picture, but it makes things hard for a beginning student. The problem is compounded by the sketchiness of the mathematical derivations.

If you are starting out in econometrics you may be better served by traditional textbooks with more detailed and linear presentations such as Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics and Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data.

If your interest is primarily in causal inference, book-length treatments that focus only on that aspect can be found in Judea Pearl's Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference or Morgan and Winship's Counterfactuals and Causal Inference.

Finally a useful econometrics book...

This is a wonderful book. Despite having taken many courses and read many statistics and econometrics books, I'm sometimes stuck in my own applied problems. Of course, these courses and books taught me how to derive asymptotic theorems or be careful when maximum likelihood fails, but this is not what I really need to know to solve my problems. Now with Angrist and Pischke, I have a book that is truly applied in focus -- one that explains why and how certain empirical strategies are convincing and one that is up-to-date with the latest examples of recent research employing these strategies. Real econometrics applied to real problems. This book should be on every applied economists bookshelf.

I have read most of his books so chose this one also. I have to say it is just okay. Nothing special or great. The stories were good but not as good as his other books. Look forward to his next one in hopes it will be better.

A Good Book for Builders of Wood-Strip and Fiberglass Boats

Building Strip-Planked Boats by Nick Schade primarily describes methods for building beautiful boats from wood strips, fiberglass and epoxy. It updates many techniques that were described in the author's earlier book, The Strip-Built Sea Kayak. This book also provides offset dimensions and instructions to build a dinghy, a one-person canoe and a rough-water sea kayak.

This book provides an excellent overview of wood-core and fiberglass construction, and detailed information on working with wood strips, fiberglass and epoxy. Many practical tips are included, as well as suggestions for avoiding and dealing with the most common problems.

However, the book seems to be missing a few chapters. Significant information for the first-time builder is absent in this book: The kayak section contains no information on the construction of bulkheads, footbraces, rudders, retractable skegs, or outfitting the boat with deck rigging and a seat. Many best practices are missing, such as measuring epoxy with nested cups, preserving brushes and rollers by freezing, pre-taping seams for joining hull and deck, and using webbing for deck riggings.

Other best building practices receive only scant mention, such as using masking tape and a sharp blade to trim secondary layers of fiberglass. The book would also have benefited from more photographs of the finished boats.

The book would have been more appealing if it offered designs for a more general-purpose canoe and a more general-purpose kayak, as fewer people will be interested in these niche designs.

This book is a good supplement for boat-builders, but most first-time builders of a strip boat would probably learn more from the step-by-step organization of Nick Schade's first book, The Strip-Built Sea Kayak: Three Rugged, Beautiful Boats You Can Build, or Ted Moores' books Canoecraft: An Illustrated Guide to Fine Woodstrip Construction and Kayakcraft: Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction. This is a 3-star book.

Good intro to little boats

If you already have some solid basic woodworking skills and have been around canoes and kayaks enough to know basically what they look like, this book contains most of the information you would need to build one, including plans and offsets for what look like a couple of beauties. It also explains "lofting" in such a way that anyone who got a D- or better in High School algebra should be able to get it. That said, this is not the best book I've found on strip-building boats, but it wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

good but too scattered

There are many good points in this book but in my opinion it is trying to be too much for too wide an audience. In the process of covering multiple types of craft the "gems" are somewhat hidden. It was a good effort, but I wish in this case it had been more linear in the presentation. Don't get me wrong, I would buy it again.
