Review
In just fourteen short chapters Dave Bernard again is the cheerleader for the reader as he or she approaches retirement. I've followed Bernard's blog, Retirement-Only the Beginningfor about a year and find this book condenses a long series of blogs about retirement into essential topics. The ultimate goal of the book is to help the future retiree find his passion.
What is on your list? Read Dave Bernard's "I Want to Retire!" and use it as a guide to create passion and meaning in your retirement years. ~ Warren Lieberman, author of 65 and Alive
I heartily recommend Dave Bernard's I WANT TO RETIRE! It's a practical handbook that shines at raising the non-financial retirement questions everyone needs to answer.A positive, matter-of-fact tone prevails throughout. My favorite pages were simply lists of questions to help the reader discover personal truths about him- or herself, to help design a retirement life that suits. Be sure to add this book to your retirement bookshelf.~ Andy Landis, author of Social Security: The Inside Story
I particularly appreciated that the book puts the focus on the psychological aspects of retirement rather than the financial aspects--there are plenty of books that cover that already. Because the author is also contemplating retirement he appears to be especially suited to asking lots of questions about what is to come--and then providing a decent amount of answers to those questions to help guide us readers to find our own. ~ Kathy Gottberg, Author, Writer, Adventurer

A retirement primer
By Douglas C. Roland
Most of us don't think we need a road map to get to retirement. We see it as the "golden years", and each of us has his or her own personal dream. However, we don't ask many questions about how to get there or whether we should go there at all. This is a recipe for getting lost.
Instead of dreaming, retirees should be asking questions, hundreds of questions. Dave Bernard has written a very practical book for anyone who has even thought about retirement. While being a thorough and relevant book full of issues to ponder, the author offers few answers. Rather, he frees the reader to consider the realities of the retired life and then plan one that is doable and satisfying. If the reader answers the questions in this book seriously, he or she may create a self-designed plan, one that even leads to a life they weren't expecting, one that is really golden.

Great insight for those of us contemplating retirement!
By Kathy Gottberg
I must confess that this is the first retirement related book that I have ever read so that certainly influences my review. As a mid-lifer I have contemplated retirement as I'm sure many of my generation has recently. So when I came across Dave Bernard's blog on the Internet and saw that he had a book entitled, "I Want To Retire! Essential Considerations For the Retiree To Be" I figured it was written just for me!
Fortunately this book is both well written and easy to read.
Some of the chapters that I found especially helpful were:
1) "Preparing your relationships for retirement." Until I read this chapter I had never considered how anyone's retirement directly impacts those we live with. There are important considerations here that everyone needs to ask and answer.
2) "Don't Save It All For Retirement." This chapter is an excellent reminder that we shouldn't put off living a quality life until we retire.
3) "Define Your Legacy" is a great chapter to me because it suggests that we think about what it is we want to be remembered for and how that will actually help our retirement plans. While not morbid in any way, it is an excellent focus that can help increase the quality of our lives in the present moment.
As the author says, "Don't we typically view our second act as more of an escape from rather than a journey to?" When you consider that anyone who is considering retirement hopes to do it for a good 20+ years it makes sense that we study up and consider some of the steps involved. I am glad to have read this book and to recommend it to others who are contemplating this step in our future.

Have you used your work as your identity?
By G. lawley
When someone asks "what do you do?" most of us will answer with the position and job title that we have when working. What happens when you retire? Many of my neighbors in my 55+ community did no planning for their retirement and thus are bored, or sit by the TV all day. This book will help you be a happy retired person because it makes you think about what "happy" means to you. It also reminds you that if you have a spouse or partner, your retirement will affect them, too!
This book emphasizes that this is the time when you have a second chance and points out some of the options available to you.
I, for example, used my retirement to write a It's Your Move: Choices for Senior Living and I also work part time -because I, like this author, need to be busy.
