Another book I read and wanted my own copy

This book is well written and at times situations described are funny. Some parts amaze. It is somewhat educating on MPD/DID as well. I have read a lot of MPD/DID books and literature. I have seen some films and gone to professional lectures. This is one of my favorite books on the subject. I would say it is among the top 5.

This story had a sad ending. The system failed Billy Milligan. He was getting some help, then bad decisions were made and he was sent to an environment that failed him. After this book I learned more about this client online. He has lived free since...but still has brushes with the law. His life has improved but he still has attitude issues and also he thinks he is a expert on MPD/DID. He also thinks MPD/DID is extremely rare and thinks he can judge all other cases to judge if they are real or not. I feel he is misinformed. MPD/DID is not rare. I have been to professional lectures on this and I've met several other MPD/DID clients. There is no mistaking that they are MPD/DID. Billy Milligan isn't completely successful living freely in society. He has written another book since, but it was published in Japan and not available in the USA... nor is it in English. He enjoys being a celebrity of sorts, but also likes to live privately. I know he had some bad experiences with his therapy and has trust issues...but he can still benefit from more that can allow him to stay unmerged but heal from the bitterness he still holds and he can learn to cope and learn to trust again.

A Highly Engaging Account of a Victim of Multiple Personalities

I would not rave over this book; however, given my strong interest in multiple personalities, as well as my interest in human psychopathology, I found "The Minds of Billy Milligan" to be a highly engaging work to read. It was written by a fairly noted novelist, and he knows how to write a story that is fascinating to the reader.

This book is about a real-life case of multiple personalities, but the author undoubtedly included much in the way of additions to what actually happened, as well as suppositions about what respective personalities knew or were thinking.

Overall, I regard this book as the best one I've ever read on multiple personality disorders. I was a bit disappointed with a less-than-positive outcome of the story, since Milligan never was found capable of functioning successfully outside of a prison or a mental institution, once he'd been apprehended for crimes he committed. Since Milligan had been a very grave victim of child abuse, including rape by a foster parent, I'd hoped that he would be able to survive and overcome the horrific psychological damage inflicted upon him. However, at the time the book was completed, he was still stuck in a maximum-security mental institution for the criminally insane. Milligan was undoubtedly brilliant, and did very impressive artistic creations. However, he never managed to surmount the obstacles to an integrated and rewarding life outside an institution - at least, not at the time of the completion of the book.

For any person interested in a story of adventure by a brilliant mental patient - whether fictional or non-fictional - this real-life story of Billy Milligan should be a worthwhile read.

it wasn't easy to find a copy

I tead this book in high school & told a friend about it. She was very intrigued - she had never heard about ythe 'male Synil'. Since it was written 35 years ago, it wasn't easy to find a copy. With free 2 Day Prime shipping this was the best price by far. I teceived a brand new copy in a short amount of time.

If you are someone who has spent time reading and re-reading the history of WWII, you know that there are all sorts of "myths" that have been built up over the years. The hypocrisy of organized religion

After a construction worker falls several stories with only minor injuries, the Catholic Church begins to suspect that he is the Second Son of God. This novels deals with the various tests he is subjected to prove or disprove this contention. Most importantly, this novel identifies the hypocrisy in organized religion. The author, Charles Sailor, shows the reader that true faith in God transcends organized relgion. This novel is a masterpiece!

The Second Son well worth locating and reading

I read this novel in the late 1970s, loaned it to someone who didn't return it, and now would love to read it again. It is the very thought-provoking story of a young construction worker who falls a great distance from the steel scaffolding of a skyscraper, survives with very little injury, and then begins to discover that he has other powers that could only be ascribed to The Second Son. He rescues a small child from a building fire via stairs that do not exist and saves a man from a gunshot to the belly by pressing his hand into the wound -- by the time the paramedics arrive, the man's wounds have already begun to heal. Because he might be who they think he might be, the Catholic church kidnaps him and takes him to Rome, where it begins to profit from his existance. What happens throughout these portions and the remainder of the book are very stimulating food for thought about how much "the First Son" and His meaning in our lives are in conflict with how He is "marketed," and not just by the Catholic Church. This novel should be on the reading list of anyone interested in how religious beliefs effect our daily lives. It's too bad it's out of print or no longer available for whatever reason.

I read this book in the 70's and was so happy to hear that a movie was going to be made. Sadly, it did not happen. The storyline is still relevant. Going to enjoy reading it once again.

A dense introduction to coherence in linguistics

I bought this book because it was the required text for a Masters-level university course. If you are reading this, it is likely that you are in the same situation and that you probably don't have any choice in terms of your purchasing options.

I found the book to be very "dense". It was not an easy read. This was probably due more to the nature of the book's material than to the way it was written, but at times I did feel that Kennedy had left out important details in his explanations that made comprehension for a beginner linguistics learner difficult. During my course, my professor frequently noted errors in the text and suggested alternative interpretations of some of the material. There is some flexibility in the field of linguistics in terms of interpretation, but I feel that Kennedy might have chosen material that was simpler and less open to various interpretations, given that this book is meant to be a primer. I would expect a second edition of the book to deal with some of these issues.

I have found that I have used the book as a reference on some occasions, but not as frequently as I refer to Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English (Biber, Conrad and Leech). I would recommend the Longman book as a first purchase for someone seeking a reference book.

A good book to add to your restoration library

I was looking for a Beetle version of the rust repairs shown in such good detail in the "How to Restore Volkswagen Bus (Enthusiast's Restoration Manual) by Mark Paxton".

This Beetle book does cover some of the same details but not nearly as much as I had hoped. I'll use the reconstruction techniques detailed in the VW Bus book coupled to the Beetle book.

Still, worth the study/read. I have about a dozen books for my Beetle and Bus and the books combined cover just about everything a person would like to know about a ground up restoration. (I love books.)

A very good review of body work

The book pulls no punches about how easy it isn't(!) to restore an old bug. But, it has lots of very good color pictures of real cars (not the pristine shots you get in shop manuals). And, the writer gives anecdotes about his experiences working on cars, what to look for in one, and when to walk away because it's likely hopeless. Sadly, his anecdotes are nowhere near as good as the Muir book. And, you really have to think twice because the entire book is written in British English (you'll be calling a wrench a "spanner" by the time you're through with it). Overall a very good purchase, even at the somewhat high price.

The related Prototype Bundle is cheating

The book is great. But I'll give 1 star. Why?

The method described in the book won't work without buying the author's Prototype Bundle, which is sold on author's own website. And this is the problem.

After reading the book I went to the author's website to purchase the Prototype Bundle with the author's promise of "receive all future updates for free". But not long after I purchased, I found out that my download link the author provided got expired. Following the instructions on his website, I have emailed the author almost dozens of emails asking him to fix this issue. But got no response.

Since the purchase happens on the author's OWN website, there's no big platform like Amazon who can help me out, it's only the author who can fix this, and he just ignored all my emails.

Guys, if you also want to purchase the bundle, think again.

I was very disappointed in this book. I read several books per year, mostly non-fiction in the realm of productivity, motivation, self-improvement, and business. I want to engage in a few new years resolutions, and was very excited to see this book recommended. The short review is this: The book had almost no structure, relied on anecdotal advice rather than substantive and concrete methodology, involved far too much pseudo-psychology for my liking, and after finishing the read, I don't feel I absorbed much useful instruction or knowledge.

The book doesn't have page numbers or chapters. Instead, there's just several headings with a few paragraphs of text following them. I don't know the Author, but he doesn't seem like a very experienced writer. At one point he talks about building a habit of writing every day, even if your writing isn't very good, and I suspect what we're reading might be the end result of such an exercise. Not having page numbers or clear sections for a non-fiction book is inexcusable. That may sound like I'm going too far, but non-fiction books designed to help you self-improve should have structure, and the ramblings of an unproven person with a quirky and eclectic set of tastes doesn't make for useful reading. The entire thing felt like a very long foreword, and I kept waiting to get to the part where we'd buckle down and learn about habit building. The book feels like a random collection of habit-related musings, many of which step over the same territory in slightly different words.

I got excited at the very beginning. I started seeing some habit-related rules. Things like "Never miss a habit twice". I thought "Oh great, we're going to get some guidelines to build habits and hold ourselves accountable". I liked a brief part about chaining habits together so that one triggers the next. I can use that information. But shortly after the first few pages, the rambling began. Talks about healthy food and grass-fed meat, drinking tea every day, etc. I don't need to agree 100% with an author if he's teaching me his methodologies, but by the end of the book the only thing I learned is that this guy has a strange set of values he finds important. I know how he feels about refined carbohydrates and what kind of workout routine he likes, but I'm no closer to building habits around daily exercise or my other goals. Unless he specifically mentions a goal in his book, you won't really learn much about it. Let me re-iterate because this is the most important part: He has not taught me how to build habits. he's mused about habit-building in general, given me a little motivation and told me about all the things that might prevent me from being successful, then he gave me a list of 20-30 habits (like going to bed on time or replacing your pantry with healthier food). This was one long, boring Lifehacker article.

I'm never harsh in a book review. And I noticed that book reviews for self-motivation and productivity are notoriously biased (They're all 5 star reviews because nobody wants to feel like the book failed them. We get pumped up and excited). I cannot remember the last time I read a book along these lines and disliked it so much. Luckily I finished reading in a day, but I feel no more ready to tackle my habit-forming than before I started reading. Such a disappointment and a waste of money/time.

Habit advice I can actually put into practice

The strength of this book is in its practicality. It's not vague on the details. It's specific in its recommendations and tells you how to do each one as well as what to expect, and when to expect it. Which means I can actually implement this stuff.

For example, he talks about building a habit of daily meditation. He gives specifics about how to do this. He tells you why you would want to do this from a practical non-"woo woo" perspective. Then he tells you how long you should follow this practice to start to see results. Without that extra info (which is normally left out by other books), I am usually trying something and then dropping it when I don't see results. Or trying something and not knowing what results I should be looking for.

The first half of the book is focused on the skill of building a habit in general, hacks, and pitfalls to watch out for. It's quite good and thorough on the subject. (I've read a number of habit and behavior change books.)

But to me, the second half of the book is the best (though I guess you need the first part to prepare you for the second). The second part is like looking through a list of superpowers and deciding which ones I want to give myself. I was seriously giddy. It's a list of a bunch of different habits that you could build for yourself, why you would want to, how to do it, and what to expect from the results. It's organized by topic with titles in each, so you can skip ones that you already mastered.

Again, great book. I'm already trying this stuff out, and more importantly know when I should be expecting to see results.

Did not disappoint!

This is the first book of Tynan's I have read. I have been a follower of his blog for a while, and he has earned my admiration. This book did not disappoint! Although I have had the book for about a week, I just now finished it, even though I am a very fast reader. Why is this? Because when I am reading something I truly enjoy, I don't want the experience to be over, so I drag it out as long as I can! This was such a book.

Even though I am quite a bit older than the author, I have found that he has a lot to teach me. He writes not only about how to incorporate new habits into your life, but also why you would want to. As a result of reading this book, I have noted several habits I want - and need - to get moving on. And now I know how best to do just that! In addition, the author gives a list of recommended habits that he thinks will improve anyone's life, and how to go about adding them. Fortunately for me, several of these habits exist already in my repertoire, and I am glad to note that I don't have to or need to "load" them as well.

There are a few typos in this book. As a writer myself, I know how hard it is to catch everything. I have no doubt that Tynan will fix the few that have appeared, and I do not find the quantity of typos to be high enough to be distracting. The message he transmits is more important than a few typos (and I don't often say that - those who know me know that I am a harsh critic of errors.)

If you have a need, or just a desire, to improve your life, especially if you want to do it in a systematic and orderly way, causing the least trouble for yourself, this is definitely the book for you. I absolutely do recommend it.

Language fascinated him so after his M.Sc. at the University of Calgary he moved to Montreal and became proficient French while completing his Ph.D. at Polytechnique. Since then he mastered Spanish and then studied Italian while he lived in Geneva. He has consulted for major corporations - Total, Haldor-Tops�e, Arkema - and several start-ups that have resulted in a dozen patents. Digital Marketing & PR Fundamentals Updated For Today

[[VIDEOID:moZ4YNGKIEIIQO]]Over the past four years, I've found myself referencing The New Rules of Marketing & PR more often than I ever imagined. It's one of the few print books I keep in my office and on the shelf. I also often recommend the book to executives looking to get a clear and compelling understanding of the digital universe and how they can put it to work for their organization. Marketing and PR professionals will find the book refreshingly insightful. The book's focus on strategies and tactics that work keep it hype-free and simple - which I like.

The Fourth Edition has completely new and updated case studies, and a wonderfully compelling new section on Newsjacking (which I'm eager to embrace after reading the book.) There are interesting new insights into app development (including a chapter on Uber.) I particularly enjoyed David's Instagram section and the new (and compelling) ideas to leverage Google Plus and Google Hangouts for my business.

In short, there aren't many books I recommend you own a paperback copy of (as opposed to an electronic edition) but this is one of them. You'll find yourself referencing it for the next two years (or at least until David Meerman Scott releases the 5th edition.)

Are you considering buying the 4th Edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR?

If you're reading this, you're probably considering buying the 4th edition of David Meerman Scott's The New Rules of Marketing & PR.

The are a couple of things you should bear in mind.

One is that, as a leading thought leader, David Meerman Scott "walks the walk." In contrast to a lot of "experts" who write about online marketing, the New Rules of Marketing & PR reflects original thinking, based on his career since 2002. David Meerman Scott practices what he preaches.

As he tells his story in the Introduction, (which you can read by clicking the Look Inside! book cover image, above), David understands media from an insider perspective. He knows media from multiple perspectives. He knew how the press operated, and he knows how it operates today. This is especially evident in Chapter 23, Newsjacking, one of the new chapters.

At one time, David controlled multi-million dollar corporate marketing budgets, but realized that, as Bob Dylan said, "the times they are a'changing."

What you get in the 4th edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR is based on what worked for him in the early years of the previous decade. David pioneered the (at the time) revolutionary view of giving drafts of chapters of the first edition of his book away for free, before his book was published to great success. Over the years, he's repeated and perfected the technique, to increasing success.

Second, there's the important element of refinement. Through the previous editions of The New Rules of Marketing & PR, David has been continuously refining and updating his ideas to reflect developing technology.

The 4th edition is as up-to-date as Obama's re-election, the mistakes that many corporations made last year following Hurricane Sandy, and what happened during the the SuperBowl "blackout" this year.

Third, I continue to be impressed by how David Meerman Scott not only describes what he did, but he is a careful writer. He writes the way he speaks.

As someone who has interviewed him several times since the first edition, I'm impressed by the way David can says a lot in a conversational tone, carefully choosing his words, and lacing them with examples and how-to tips. Such writing doesn't come naturally. You have to work at it to get it right.

Thus, the 4th edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR is a "safe" book to buy, even if you're familiar with the previous editions. Of course, if you're new to David Meerman Scott and his story, you have a lot of pleasant reading ahead of you!

What's the difference between the 1st and 4th edition of David Meerman Scott's "The New Rules of Marketing and PR?"

In 2006, Scott predicted the emergence of a communication environment where "big" no longer conferred inherent advantage; where instead sincere and compelling content would resonate, no matter where it came from. He theorized why the weasel-word tone of corporate comms would no longer cut it. Before Twitter and Facebook were even on the radar, he envisioned an era where social media would lead to lightning-fast changes in reputation: obscurity to fame or fame to notoriety overnight. Not everyone believed him.

Now the world that Scott predicted is undeniably here, and the 4th edition powerfully outlines how to thrive in it. Steal it if you have to, but read this book -- especially if you're still spitting out weasel-speak like, "this call may be monitored for quality assurance purposes."
