About the Author
Craig Van Slyke is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems and chair of the Decision Science/Management Information Systems department at Saint Louis University. Prior to joining SLU, he was on the faculties of University of Central Florida and Ohio University. He teaches a variety of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of South Florida. Dr. Van Slyke also spent many years in the information technology industry in a number of capacities. His current research interests focus on issues related to the adoption of information and communication technologies. Dr. Van Slyke has published in a number of journals including Information Resource Management Journal, Communications of the ACM, Journal of the AIS, European Journal of Information Systems, Decision Sciences, and Database for Advances in Information Systems, among other journals. He serves on the editorial board of Information Resource Management Journal, and the Journal of Information Systems Education. In addition, he has co-authored three information systems textbooks. Dr. Van Slyke holds leadership positions in AIS SIG:ED and the Southern Association for Information Systems.

Jack Ryan, Clancy's amazing upwardly mobile series hero, must put together a government from the wreckage left at the end of Debt of Honor (Putnam, 1994). While Jack, who assumed the U.S. presidency after the shocking deaths of the president and many congresspeople, attends to affairs of state, selecting a new Cabinet and arranging for special Congressional elections, enemies far and near continue to create nefarious plots against the United States. Political enemies prove themselves equally relentless, attacking the very legitimacy of Ryan's presidential role. While Clancy is, as always, chillingly up-to-date, he telegraphs too many plotlines here. Worse, Ryan has become something of a whiner, complaining at length about the miseries of living a political life. At almost 900 pages, the book includes too much minutiae and dwells overlong on Ryan's earlier adventures. Early in his famous novel, Flaubert writes that Emma Bovary "turned away from the calm life for excitement. She loved the sea only for its storms..." An interesting question posed by Tom Clancy's thrillers is whether their bookstore and box-office appeal suggests merely a Bovary-like search for excitement, or whether his readers actually share his view of the world.

In all his novels, Clancy skillfully juggles several themes at once. But his most obvious talent lies in offering intelligible descriptions of contemporary machinery: a nuclear weapon, the electronic innards of securities trading, the basics of biological warfare. The reader of Executive Orders, in particular, is treated to a graphic description of the effects of the Ebola virus on the human body, from the initial flu-like symptoms to the vomiting, delirium, gross distention of organs, disintegration of vascular-system tissue, and eventual massive internal bleeding that ends in death. An equally explicit recipe follows for collecting the virus from a decedent's infected tissue and preserving it alive for travel and dissemination.

As always, Clancy uses this book, too, as a forum for stating his beliefs. Principal among them is that the United States--a decent nation confronted from time to time by states with immoral men at the helm--requires a vigorous defense, but may soon lack enough military power for the job. Unfortunately, Executive Orders, like its predecessors, does not afford much insight into the people who would be called upon to do the fighting, or into the moral issues raised by military action and diplomacy alike. --Commentary Magazine, Seth Cropsey

My favorite of all original Clancy

First, this is original Clancy before all the ghost writers.

Second, this is the story where Jack Ryan is forced to become President in some amazing twist of events and he does some quite interesting things in office, especially relating to the business-side of the government.

This is the pinnacle of Jack Ryan's career. If you are a fan of all the original Jack Ryan stories, this is an absolute must-read.

Good Jack Ryan story, but buy a hard copy edition, not kindle edition

Another good story by Tom Clancy. However, the KINDLE edition has MANY typos, especially toward the end of the book. It seems the scanned copy for the kindle edition was not proofread. There are many 1's for l's, letter c for letter e, spacing errors. I love my KINDLE, but this version was the worst of any book I've read. I'm buying hard copies of the Tom Clancy stories from now on.

Jack Ryan At His Best

A completely engaging novel. Several sub plots and intrigue intertwined into a cohesive story that is hard to put down, especially at certain points. Jack Ryan once again proves himself to be an able man on the helm, and in a spot he did not want or seek. I especially liked the part where former VP Kealty steps in a mess while trying to harass Ryan.

Herzen is the Culmination of Russian Romantic Thought

In the years before Lenin and the harsh, bleak application of socialist thought to autocracy there existed a group of philosophers who believed in the beauty of the commune and its cooperation with a Republican government. Britain had Robert Owen and his factory town, the French had Fourier (the phalanstery) and Proudhon among others, and the Russians had Herzen. Here existed a time where the leading academics saw folly in violent revolution, and Herzen was by no means a demogogue willing to mobilize the Russian peasants in a siege of Moscow like a simple Pugachev or a Decembrist.
This perhaps explains Herzen's stern dislike of Marx and Engels, for he saw too much of the Robespierre in them and their ideas.
Herzen believed in democracy almost in a modern American sense. Indeed, much of the work is laced with arguments in disfavor to the flowering of socialism in Europe, citing particularly the cruelty of the police in France during 1848: "The Latin world does not like freedom, it only likes to sue for it." Certainly the tendencies of the Germans were no more progressive either. Instead at one point in the text the author suggests that those who "can put off from himself the old Adam of Europe and be born again a new Jonathan had better take the first steamer to some place in Wisconsin or Kansas."
The selections and abridgement of the text emphasize Herzen's basic belief about reform: revolution is gradual. One has to breed engrained stupidity out of the ruling class and make laws that better everyone, like the English and Americans. Laws make a better society, not people: "The Englishman's liberty is more in his institutions than in himself or his conscience. His freedom is the 'common law.'"
The text covers the demise of Herzen, culminating in his rejection on his deathbed by the new revolutionary ("terrorist") camps in Russia, headed ideologically by Chernyshevsky and best seen in the widespread incendiary and murderous practices of Sergei Nechaev. These are all topics of the years after Herzen's death, the tragic history of the latter half of the nineteenth century and the prelude to the pall of 1917.

Some Observations

One finds oneself drawn to Herzen. He comes off as urbane, generous, strong, empathetic to those suffering under the Tsar (and all tyrannies), dedicated to the cause of bringing freedom to his homeland and a wonderful writer. He seems to have known, or at least bumped into, all the luminaries of the Russia and the Europe of his time.

This abridgement by Dwight McDonald, dating I believe from 1968, is of its time. The editor tells us that he excised those portions of the narrative dealing with Herzen's marriage, his wife's affair with a close friend of Herzen's, the loss of his mother and son in the sinking of a passenger boat and the death of his wife shortly thereafter. I wish that material had been included. I suppose an abridgement done in 2007 might include only those portions and nothing else, as we have less high seriousness and more interest in scandal and tragedy. In any case, I would have loved to read Herzen on these more personal topics.

I should add that it may be my spotty background in 19th Century European history but I was lost any number of times as I read. Herzen is telling us about contemporary men, events, controversies and schools of thought. There are numerous footnotes identifying the people he refers to but I needed more--no doubt the references would have been understood by any educated reader at the time but that was then.

That said, I'm glad I made the effort and I wish I could have met him.

There is no question that it is good to have this edition of Alexander Herzen's autobiography, "My Past and Thoughts," though it is considerably abridged. The work is deservedly praised as one of the great autobiographies of the West. Well written and colorful, it acquaints us with the mind and spirit of one of the most important political figures of the nineteenth century. Herzen, darling of radicals and nemesis of conservatives (wrongly, I believe), is a seminal thinker and activist of his time.
Herzen, a Russian by birth but an internationalist in spirit, knew most of the radicals of the era, Bakunin, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Louis Blanc. Yet he was in a way not one of them. He was too hardheaded and too reasonable--he knew what worked and what didn't. Raised in autocratic Russia, he had experienced prison, exile--and fame as a writer.
This edition has been abridged by Dwight MacDonald, unfortunately leaving out some crucial parts, for example his relations with his wife, Natalie, and other more domestic issues. However, the original appeared in five volumes, and something had to be excised to make this edition manageable. Those who wish to read the complete autobiography should look up the Knopf four-volume edition of 1968. Nonetheless, this edition will do for most of us. It's a gem.

I would like to thank the authors for sharing their experience in cyclone area. Despite of the complexity of this subject, the text is very clear and the authors always try to give us simple examples that simplify the understanding. The book is recommended for all who works with cyclones.

*The* authority on cyclones and cyclone design principals

If you want to learn and about design cyclones, this is *the* book for it. Originally, I used the first edition, and this book was already very good then. I have a 2nd edition now. The second edition is longer and contains more material.

This book is well written. The writing is concise, and there aren't very many errors. Equations are clearly presented. The variables used are clearly defined in a list of variables in the front of the book.

There aren't any color photos, but the black and white diagrams and photos are of high quality.

The book contains interesting things about cyclone history if you are a technological history buff, but if you are an engineer just looking to get down to the technical details, it is very easy to skip over the beginning chapters, and go straight to business. I actually used this book to design two cyclones for a very demanding application, and they performed well for me.

One final thing that I should note is that although the title is called "Gas cyclones and swirl tubes," there isn't very much information in this book about swirl tubes. Almost all of the material in the book is about cyclones. This isn't a huge problem though because cyclones are much more commonly used, and the two devices behave similarly.
