You will LOVE this book!

I was lucky enough to be asked to do an ARC of "Reave" so that I may leave an unbiased review of the book when it became published onto Amazon. Happy to oblige, I'm here to tell everyone that this was an incredible story.

When it comes to character development, Miller is amazing. You watch the characters grow throughout the story and you become deeply invested in their growth and their lives. It's hard not to fall in love with the main character, Aster, and begin to root for her throughout the entire story. As for the other characters, you truly get to know each of them, whether it is love or hate. The character progression is astounding and you literally do what each character progress through the story as it gets told.

Imagery is another thing that Miller does exceptionally well. Throughout reading, it was incredibly easy to see each character plainly in my head, as well as their surroundings. The detail that goes into telling the story is beautiful.

I have to say that "Reave" is an incredible addition to anyone's book collection and it is a definite must read. I found it hard to put the book down and was upset when I finished; I wanted more! I give 5 out of 5 stars for this exceptional book, and will be recommending it to any and every person I know that enjoys a well-thought out, wonderfully developed story.

I was fortunate enough to be asked to read an ARC of "Reave" prior to its publication here on Amazon for an honest, unbiased review in return. Not being the type to lie or put on a false front anyway, I happily agreed.

This book certainly exceeded my expectations. The characters are beyond believable - you develop a connection to them (whether love or hate) and you find yourself not only rooting for the main character, Aster, but feeling as though you, yourself, are invested in her. The world Aster lives in that C. Miller has created in "Reave" is also beyond believable - a world where people aren't always (or are hardly ever) what they seem. Where the world you know only extends to the area in which you live, and the people you know aren't always people you can trust. Don't we experience these in our own lives? I feel Reave is a must-read as well as one that is hard to put down - I found myself with a few sleep-deprived nights due to having trouble putting it down to go to sleep. :) I would recommend "Reave" to anyone who enjoys a good book, and would venture to say that I truly believe that it could every bit as popular and loved as any of the current young adult books/series out on the shelves today. In fact, I plan to purchase several copies for Chirstmas gifts for people I know who are avid readers. :)

A Surprise

I started following C. Miller's blog a few months ago. When she announced she had published Reave, I purchased it as a show of support for her writing/publishing endeavors. I wasn't sure if I'd read it or when because the book just didn't seem to be something I'd be interested in. So, Friday night I was home, coming down with a head cold, and I needed something to read. I clicked to open Reave. The opening pages are magical and sucked me in. Yeah, the story is in many ways not what I typically read these days, but the author wrote a story that pulled me along. Is it a perfectly told tale? No, but few are. What it is, however, is the kind of book I wasn't going to put down until I finished it and 24 hours later I had. Well done, C. Miller, well done.

Great insight for designers or people interesting in design in Berlin!

I am a designer living in Berlin for the last year. It was such a great review of and insight into the design scene. I highly recommend to new comers to Berlin with an interest in design, I have discovered some very interesting places through this book.
In particular the experimental retail section and the Boros collection are great to check out.

(Not sure about the other review - though I recommend checking it out yourself!)

Missed many of what I think are the important galleries, spots, restaurants in Berlin. I live in Berlin 4 months a year and wanted to send it to people who were coming to visit---which I may, but it is certainly not the scoop. The best art gallery in Berlin is not mentioned and one that is has closed. The format is easy and good for someone who knows nothing at all about the City.

Wonderful book to explain the soul to children

The soul is a very hard to understand no matter what age you are. However, for kids, it is darn near impossible. For kids ages 4 to 8, if they can't see something, then it is hard for them to accept it as true. How then do you explain to them about a part of their being that they cannot and will not ever see? This book attempts to do just that.

Forever You starts off by differentiating people from animals and explaining plainly that we are God's only creatures with souls. It then explains about the different parts of our bodies, such as hands or feet, and what they are used for. These physical body parts are then contrasted with the soul so that your child learns what their soul is able to do. Lastly, the book explains the eternal nature of the soul and how it's ultimate and desired destination is Heaven and unity with God.

This book gets 5 out 5 stars from me. Ms. Lataif did a wonderful job explaining a difficult subject and putting it in terms that children can understand. It is definitely a book I am thankful to have in my library now as I know that I could not have explained the subject of the soul better if I tried. Ms. Rojas also did an excellent job illustrating this book. I especially like that it is multi-racial and has people of all ages in it.

A great book: worth reading, sharing, and rereading

My eight-year-old found this book in a pile in my office. As she was walking out of my office with it, I said, "Hey! We have to write a review about that one!"

"OK!" she said, already opening the book. "I'll tell you what to write."

About ten minutes later, she found me in the kitchen. "So?" I said. "What are we writing?"

"Ten out of ten stars," she said. "I really liked it!"

"What was your favorite part?"

"I like how it talks about our soul and the person we are."

I hadn't read the book at that point, and I was intrigued.

The first page of the book, titled "For Grown-ups," states that Forever You is "a resource for Christian faith formation at the most basic level, intended to help you explain to children what being human is all about."

We're both body AND soul.

The book opens with, "Your soul is in all you are and do--soul and body, forever you." It continues, engaging readers with pictures and emphasizing that body and soul aren't separated, even in things like climbing a tree or taking a bath. The refrain's repeated and there's rhyming.

It's an easy read, whether you're the adult or the eight-year-old. This is a message *I* needed to hear, too, one that we could all use a reminder of.

In the words of my five-year-old, this book gets 25 gold stars. Good stuff, worth sharing and rereading.

ANOTHER WONDERFUL WORK BY TODD PARR. This is one of the better new book releases this year.

Over the past several years I have run across, and indeed read to children, quite a number of books by Todd Parr. I am not sure how many there have been but I do know that I have yet to find one that did not completely delight me. I have never had a kid complain about them either. This work; "The I'm Not Scared Book," is no exception. This author, who is also the artist, can do more with simply shapes and a limited number of colors than I have ever seen before. Also, as with his other books, his sensitivity and ability to address problems and concerns of the sort of things that children often need help with is most insightful, informative and helpful. It is as if Parr remembers absolutely what it was like to be a small child.

In this particular work, the author has addressed common fears that all young people face from time to time...from the real and relatively important, to those that may seem trifle to we adults, but are very paramount in a child's mind. The book is designed so that on one page a fear is voiced, and on the opposite page the solution to that fear or what makes that fear go away is noted and discussed.

"Sometimes I'm scared when my family argues."

"I'm not scared when we hug and say I'm Sorry."

Or...

"Sometimes I'm scared of what's under my bed." (Hmmm, I am a bit fearful of that myself at times.)

"I'm not scared once I clean everything out and see all my favorite toys."

The last page of the book makes a statement: "Sometimes we are scared of things because we don't understand them." This, when you think about it, is more or less the sum of most fears.

And then there is the art work! My goodness! Large bold pictures, all outlined in black with bright bold colors that simply snap from the page and catch the reader's eye. These are not at first glance complicated pictures but each makes a statement conveying the thought of the artist/writer perfectly. I like these illustrations because they are of the nature that a small child can attempt to recreate them and not feel intimidated or discouraged. In addition to a nice story with a nice life lesson, you are actually, if you work it right, getting a very nice art lesson for the little ones thrown in. If you watch a group of children closely over a period of time, you will not quite often that they will attempt to recreate pictures and characters from the books they read. This is one of the ways they learn to create art...hey, it's a starting point!

When reading this story to or with the wee ones, it gives ample room for the adult to investigate just what it is that a particular child or group of children are afraid of and address those issues right then and there. All in all this is a very valuable teaching tool.

The book itself is well designed and as with all books this company produces, is stout enough to take a pretty good beating and make it through it. The cover is heavy and the stars you see in the cover picture have been cut out...like as in you can put your finger through them.

There is no doubt that Mr. Parr has another winner for us here.

Another great Todd Parr book!

This book goes beyond the other "fear/being afraid' books that are out there. The fear is stated and the next page shows a non-scary similar situation. Almost like a Scary/Not Scary format. It helps kids see solutions and promotes thinking skills. There are several themes this could be used for: going to school, Halloween, underwear....I will definitely use this book in my preschool classroom!

Huge Todd Parr fan over here! He helps us not take it all so seriously. The kids go ga ga over the illustrations and his humorous lines he sneaks in. Like this one....Sometimes I'm scared to go shopping for new underwear. I'm not scared when I wear them on my head. How funny and random is that?! Of course the kids laugh and laugh. If I'm going to tackle a feeling like being scared it's nice to be able to pull a Todd Parr book of my shelf. I like how each scared statement he writes has a positive solution accompanying it. Be prepared to have your kids ask you to read this one over and over. Ask them to come up with a scared feeling, but don't forget to have them also add in the positive solution to the fear. Good stuff!
