Simone grew up during the Depression in a small North Carolina town where, thanks to a farsighted music teacher and caring neighbors who paid for her lessons, she was trained as a classical pianist. After attending Juilliard on a scholarship she was rejected by the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia (a setback she attributes to the fact that she is black), and she became a nightclub entertainer, singing and accompanying herself on the piano and, with her skillful improvisations of popular songs in classical style, quickly becoming a star. In the 1960s she joined the civil rights movement and became well known as a protest singer. Then, in the 1970s and '80s, disillusioned with the U.S., she went into self-imposed exile in Africa and Europe. Unfortunately, written with freelancer Cleary, her account of these later years, in which she concentrates on personal problems and a number of tiresome love affairs, lacks the interest of the early part of the book, which describes her unusual childhood and remarkable rise to fame. This review is primarily a response to "Lemas Mitchell's" review entitled "A case study in mental illness, stupidity and pure insanity" :
The point is not to ponder how Nina Simone could have, or should have lived her life, but to discover how she did live her life. I don't think Nina Simone had to prove anything or give us any more - she already gave so much of herself through her music. And had she not suffered, her music might not have had the depth and richness that is has. If anything, the rest of us should never forget that we get all the benefits of her suffering without the pain.

Fantastic read. If you are a fan of the great Nina Simone you need this book in your collection. You get a glimpse inside her chaotic world and learn more in depth of who this woman really was. This book is a spell bound.

She Put A Spell on Me

Nina Simone led a really interesting life, perhaps not what you would quite expect from a star. I went into this book expecting to read a lot more about her songs, so it was a little disappointing to not learn much about specific songs other than " Mississippi Goddamn", but this book leaves you with a lot to think about. It's sad that, with so many fans who adored the "star", the private Nina Simone spent her whole life looking for love. How different would Nina be if her mother had shown her the love she so desperately needed? If you are interested in the real Nina, Eunice Waymon, I recommend this book. I think it will leave you wondering, as it did me, and perhaps with an appreciation or understanding about other eras and other ways of life.

Outstanding frontier science in physics and astronomy

Half a Century ago in grad school I remember the apprehension we students felt when we heard that there might actually be more than a “few” basic fundamental atomic particles. We were told we had to keep looking and checking every possibility, because physics and astronomy were about mankind’s pursuit of truth. Truth is not relative and the evidence should be followed down every rational path. Guided by this rule, Barry Setterfield started from the basics of what we knew, leaving no stone unturned. The results are based on solid, well-founded science but are astounding in their implications. This analysis could form the basis of text-book material for post-doctoral students. However, thanks to the skill of Barry’s wife Helen, it is very lay-friendly and extremely readable. The data are unerringly followed without being forced into a pre-existing theory or theories. This makes for fascinating results.

How I defeated the Restless-Legs Syndrome-Book healing report

I did not like this man's approach to something I have suffered with for over forty years. I do agree that there are valuable holistic medications that can help RLS but for me they only make matters worse. I suppose everyone must try to find what works best for them. As for me, I use a stepper. When I have a severe attach I get on my stepper and pump until my legs are so tired they don't have the energy to jump anymore. Then I can fall asleep. I do not agree that you need years of counseling to correct it. For a time I was going to a chiropractor on a very regular basis 2-3 times a week. After about a year I noticed that the RLS had gone away. After being out of that treatment for about 2 years the RLS has come back.

What a waste of time and money

This is a long rambling, poorly written litany of the authors illness. The medication we hear about at the end of the book are mineral salts that are made in Germany. Let me save you some time and money---Schuessier Salts. And he was taking 47 pills a day. I am so sorry I bought this.

Not likely to benefit you

This book is the author's personal story of the 8 years of his life when he was suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS). A lot of it is actually not so much about his RLS as it is about other aspects of his life. He gives the impression of being a man who doesn't want to show weakness or admit defeat, and so we don't really get a deep insight into the psychological or emotional effects of the disease, which could have been one of the strengths of this kind of book. However, he does mention that at some point he was depressed - which he of course attributed to the medication. Note: For long periods he needed drugs, like many others, to control his RLS. Rather he tells us in a more factual way what he used to do at times when the RLS was unbearable. You will not learn what RLS is from this book (except the author's unique personal experience of it). You will not learn where to find treatment centers, support groups or more information. You will not learn about contemporary treatment. You will not learn about a cure for your restless legs syndrome. You will learn about selected parts of his journey (fit for his ego), how he tried to remove RLS by pure will power and pain, and finally discover the alternative treatment that seemed to have worked for him in the end - homeopathic cell salts (and some personal psychological insights). Schuessler cell salts is basically minerals diluted until there is only water and no more mineral left. I must admit that I found his view on the psychosomatic nature of a few diseases quite interesting, although I disagree with it. I am happy for Matthew Hubner, having found his way out of severe suffering, but in my opinion, his experience is not likely to practically benefit others who suffer from RLS. Therefore I would not recommend this book.

I like the dialogue of David scattered throughout the book.
The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because I prefer to see David as he is now and not so many photos of him in his youth.

The author seeks to show that the existence of borders produces the violence that surrounds them.I don't think he fully succeeds

The author "disputes the idea that borders are a natural part of the human world" and believes that "the existence of the border itself produces the violence that surrounds it." Political borders "are not the result of a transparent sorting of historical peoples into their own territories" but rather "an efficient system for maintaining political control of an area through agreements and documents that are backed up with the threat of violence." He sees borders as fundamentally violent, and thus embraces and employs a "broader and more nuanced definition of violence" than many people will find intuitive.

Much, then, depends on the author's presenting a clear and persuasive account of what 'structural violence' is and how it is (and is not) morally equivalent to 'direct violence.' To cut to the chase, I don't think he does it. He is not entirely at fault for that: It is an ambitious claim, and does not lend itself to short discussion on the way to making other points. But it is the fulcrum nonetheless.

I certainly approached the book with a lot of sympathy for the view that the current response of the affluent western nations to the 'refugee crisis' (a troubled and tendentious way to describe the predicaments of the people who are fleeing their native lands to seek refuge from war, persecution, or crippling poverty). And I certainly think that the heavy militarization of the US border has been, and remains, a tragic misdirection of policy. So I wanted to be persuaded by this book to see borders as the author does. I wasn't. The author's premisesand assumptions are contestable, the arguments are thin, and the history he presents is so synoptic as to raise serious questions about the omissions, which casts doubt on the soundness of the author's overall narrative, and his frequent invocation of doubtful analogies.

The idea that there is such a thing as a 'transparent' sorting of people strikes me as naive, and doubtful. Who gets included in a group and who gets excluded from it is, and no doubt always has been, contestable. And the idea that there is clarity (and thus defensibility?) in saying who it is that is a 'historical people' and what their 'own territory' was is no better. The human population has increased vastly (and unevenly), and many more people have married across categories (to put it politely). There would be pressures and tensions about whose territory is whose--and thus, 'structural violence'--even if one believed that one could sort humans into 'historical people' categories.

I think that the best parts of the book are the largely descriptive ones (chapters one and two). Here the author's evident sympathy for the people caught up in border violence is powerful, and moving.

Thought provoking

This book is thought provoking on an important topic that easy to be blind to if you live in most of the US. The first several chapters specifically drive home the point that no one does dangerous border crossings unless they have to, and he does an excellent job of drawing you into the plight of refugees. He does a good job questioning policy assumptions and pointing out flaws in policies and political moves made to skirt the issue.

On other other hand, I wasn't totally comfortable with his premise that rich nations only want to maintain their wealth and that's why they keep immigrants out. I'm not sure it's so cut and dry and I am inclined to think there are more factors at play than wealthy white nations keeping poor people out. It seems to me that wealthy nations tend to be more stable and that an influx of refugees could certainly cause chaos and civil unrest. I don't have a degree in this and haven't read much about it so I could be wrong, but I wasn't convinced that the premise was right and therefore wasn't entirely convinced that the borders should just be opened and everyone allowed freedom of movement either.

I did appreciate his perspective, I just didn't find it completely convincing.

Timely and informative

An example of geographical studies at its best. It's one of those books that manages to cover both the specific events happening on the ground and the broader issues of theory and policy that underlie them. It would be an understatement to say that it's a wideranging study: the field of view ranges from (for example) the experiences of a single family in the West Bank to an overview of the world-wide effects of globalization, including NAFTA, the TPP, and other developments. And the book covers both the historical and the present-day situation: as the author explains, the concept of a state with control of movement within and across a fixed boundary is actually relatively recent, within the last few hundred years, and the building of walls and other barriers is largely a phenomenon of the last few decades. One of the most interesting parts of the book is a discussion of how borders interact with economic theory: both the Chicago School (on the right) and the Keynesians (on the left) fail to properly take account of the role of borders. We have a world today where capital and goods now move freely across borders but people cannot, and the results of that are discussed in detail. I learned a great deal from this book.
