Red, White, and Blue: A Critical Analysis of Constitutional Law (Constitutional Thinking), by Mark V. Tushnet

The first paperback edition of a classic of American constitutional theory. The book is divided into two parts. In Part I Professor Tushnet appraises the five major competing “grand theories” of constitutional law and interpretation, and, argues that none of them satisfy their own requirements for coherence and judicial constraint. In Part II the author offers a descriptive sociology of constitutional doctrine and raises critical questions as to whether a grand theory is necessary, is it possible to construct a coherent, useful grand theory, and is construction of an uncontroversial grand theory possible?

Professor Tushnet’s new Afterword is organized in parallel fashion to the original text. Part I offers a new survey of the contemporary terrain of constitutional interpretation. Part II provides an extended discussion of the most prominent of contemporary efforts to provide an external analysis of constitutional law, the idea of regime politics. This includes discussion of major court decisions, including Bush v. Gore and Citizens United.

"Red, White, and Blue brilliantly crystallized the anxieties about judicial review that dominated constitutional debates during the 1980s, and its central, critical arguments retain their bite. As a critique of grand constitutional theorizing, Red, White, and Blue remains unsurpassed."—Richard H. Fallon, Jr., author of The Dynamic Constitution: An Introduction to American Constitutional Law and Practice

A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever, by Marianne Williamson

"If your 'weighty thinking' does not change, then even if you lose weight you'll retain an overwhelming subconscious urge to gain it back. It's less important how quickly you lose weight, and more important how holistically you lose weight; you want your mind, your emotions, and your body to all 'lose weight.' Weight that disappears from your body but not from your soul is simply recycling outward for a while

but is almost certain to return. It's self-defeating, therefore, to struggle to drop excess weight unless

you are also willing to drop the thought-forms that initially produced it and now hold it in place."

- Marianne Williamson

What is the connection between spirituality and weight loss? Best-selling author Marianne Williamson is about to answer that question for you in her groundbreaking new book, bringing you 21 spiritual lessons to help you surrender your weight forever. These lessons form a holistic paradigm for weight loss, addressing the spiritual, emotional, and psychological elements involved in what Williamson refers to as "conscious weight loss." If you are a food addict, a compulsive eater, or someone who for any reason sees food as the enemy, this book is for you.

A Course in Weight Loss addresses the true causal root of your weight-loss issues: a place within you where you have forgotten your divine perfection. This forgetfulness has confused not only your mind but also your body, making you reach for that which cannot sustain you . . . and reject that which does. As your mind reclaims its spiritual intelligence, your body will reclaim its natural intelligence as well.

The 21 lessons in this book will take you on a deep, sacred journey. One step at a time, you will learn to shift your relationship with yourself-and your body-from one of fear to one of love. And you will begin to integrate the various parts of yourself-mind, body, and spirit-to become, once again, and in all ways, the beautiful and peaceful person you were created to be.

As Williamson writes: "When it comes to your enjoyment of eating, your best days are not behind you but ahead of you!" So get ready to begin a new relationship with food . . . and with yourself.

Lessons take longer than a day.
By J Nymph
So far I love it. I have been a MW fan for two decades. I am really "working" the program. It contains 14 Lessons. Of hand it mentions that it is a lesson per day. The first lesson has taken me a month to date and I still have a few more words to work through. There are a list of emotions to release. You are supposed to choose those that apply. Of course, they all apply. I spend about 30 minutes journaling on each. I do one word per day. There are about 28 words. After a couple of weeks I realized I was doing the mental work but not the emotional release. Now I am going back over the list and really allowing myself to feel the feelings, express them (privately), surrender them. It is really working. I am feeling it lift off my shoulders. I have been able to modify my diet.

I love how it gets to the real root of most ...
By Dianne
My husband and I have been working on getting healthier and fit again, and although we eat clean and work out 5-6 times a week, I find it hard sometimes to lose the weight I need to lose. I have a lot of different health books, from diets to inflammation and various health conditions that can cause a slow metabolism and difficulty losing weight. I came across this book by Marianne Williamson, and have found it to be very true and enlightening to me and my journey to a healthier, fitter me! I love how it gets to the real root of most issues of not being able to lose weight, and that is the emotional side. This is very true, especially for me, that a person needs to really get to the emotional reason they overeat or eat poorly to begin with. For me, it has been emotional issues tied with my fears and insecurities, and this book has helped me realize that I was eating to mask my pain and sadness, and this is true for many others as well. This is a great book, and if you are struggling with weight issues, I highly recommend this book to help you get in touch with your emotional and spiritual side to help find the real issues that may be hindering your weight loss.

Wonderful Insight into Real Problems - Not for Everyone
By Bill Cashell
If you are already a fan of Marianne Williamson, you will probably enjoy this book. If you are not familiar with her, it may help to know her background before considering this book. She has spent many years studying and teaching the concepts of "A Course in Miracles" which is a spiritual book. She noticed that while embracing these concepts, her emotional need to use food to suppress her negative feelings disappeared. The idea of writing this book came from a conversation with Oprah Winfrey, one of the world's best known dieters.

As you might suspect, this book is not about food, it is about spirituality. It is about finding a power greater than you for help. As Marianne told Oprah, "If you could do it by yourself, you would have done it by now". Good point!

Many people will relate to the thoughts in this book. Childhood wounds create addictive behavior to treat the wounds. When you overeat for comfort, you are not doing it to give yourself love - you are doing it because you dislike something about yourself. When you eat one cookie, it is okay. When you eat the whole bag, it is an act of self-hate.

The premise is that the cause of excessive weight is not in your body, it is in your mind. More specifically, it is fear which blocks feelings of love. The purpose of this course is to find the fear and replace it with love.

There are several exercises and assignments to help you put names on the feelings, such as pain, shame, loathing and whatever you are personally feeling. There are prayers and mental exercises, as well as a journaling section. This is not a book to read passively and expect your life to change. If you really do these things to find and change your feelings, it will probably work for you. This is also a book that is meant to be reviewed several times to reinforce your feelings.

If you tend to be more of a passive reader who wants to read a book and go on to the next one, you might want to consider the audio version of this book and listen to it several times. Marianne is an excellent speaker and really connects with the listener. She is very passionate.

If you are turned off by spirituality and references to God, you may be tempted to skip this book. The ideas and principles are really about your subconscious feelings and how they drive your eating. You are feeding your feelings and not your body. They can apply to anyone no matter what your spiritual beliefs are.

This is not a book to be used alone, because it does not address food. Eating is not rocket science. There is not a heavy person in the world that doesn't know that broccoli is good for you and donuts are bad. However, in today's world it is important to understand more about how certain foods affect your body. Dr. Dean Ornish writes the forward to this book and discusses addictive behavior and diet failure. He and others like him are a good source of information on nutrition.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who has struggled with their eating. An obsession with food is like any obsessive relationship. It is about getting and not giving. What is missing from your life? What are you trying to get from food?

Tornado Over the Tigris : Recollections of a Fast Jet Pilot, by Michael Napier

Written from the unique perspective of a fast jet cockpit, Tornado Over the Tigris captures the essence of what it was really like to fly a Tornado at the front-line of the Cold War in Germany and on operations over Iraq in the aftermath of the Gulf War.

After achieving a boyhood ambition to qualify as an RAF pilot, Michael Napier was posted to RAF Bruggen in Germany where he spent five years flying Tornado GR1 strike/attack aircraft at the height of the Cold War. Always exhilarating, sometimes amusing and often dangerous, Michael Napier's Tornado flying ranged from 'routine' low-flying in continental Europe and the UK, to air combat manoeuvring in Sardinia and the ultra-realistic Red Flag exercises in the USA.

Progressing from struggling first-tourist to respected four-ship leader, he then became an instructor at the Tactical Weapons Unit at RAF Chivenor. This tour, during which he flew the Hawk, provided yet more exciting and challenging flying. He returned to the Tornado at Bruggen as a Flight Commander shortly after the Gulf War and subsequently flew a number of operational sorties over Iraq, which included leading air-strikes against Iraqi air defence installations as part of major Coalition operations.

This is his story, told with ease and great style. It is sure to inspire a fresh generation of fast jet pilots as they strive to make their own marks in this field.

Review
"If you like being strapped into a fighter cockpit and churning and burning in afterburner (or reheat as the Brits call it), you'll love Squadron Leader Michael Napier's story! A great read, it takes you on a journey from youth, through training, and into the lethality of combat ops over the skies of Iraq. I found myself gripped by the details of squadron life, of insights into the complexities of functioning in a coalition of different air forces in a foreign land, and of the gut fear of first combat. Napier's recount of his life and times is a must read for anybody with a passion for fast flying and crushing g-forces.";;Mike Mullane, NASA Astronaut (Ret.),Col., USAF (Ret), Author: Riding Rockets, Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut.;;"Professional competence is still the military gold standard, and the modern RAF has it in spades. Michael Napier's telling of the Tornado professionals' story puts you in the cockpit and takes you on a grand adventure." Stephen Coonts, Author: Flight of the Intruder.;;"Vivid rich in detail and of full of some terrific aerial action, Tornado Over the Tigris takes readers into the cockpits and crewrooms of a frontline RAF squadron during a fascinating period in the service's history." Rowland White, Author: Vulcan 607, Phoenix Squadron

Fantastic Read.
By Old Student
Tornado Over the Tigris is a fantastic book and a wonderfully rewarding piece of writing.

Michael Napier skilfully writes about a line of work that is intrinsically technical in a way that makes it accessible to the layperson. Combine this rare talent with a truly remarkable ability to describe some of the sights and sounds of tactical fast jet flying, skyscapes, landscapes, people and anecdotes, and you have the ingredients required to produce fantastic prose that is eminently readable, thoroughly enjoyable, and has you repeatedly coming back for more.

The book sheds light on the journey of a young man who dreams of flying with the Royal Air Force and goes on to make that a reality, despite self doubt and the challenges that are inherent in fast jet operations. There's real humility in the retelling of Napier's years flying Tornados - another quality that endears the book and the author to reader, particularly so in a genre where a lot of fighter pilots-turned-writers are quite happy to paint themselves the way they want to be seen, not the way that they actually were. The book regularly delivers humour, pausing occasionally to describe the impact of mishaps and lost friends, and provides a little insight into the political machinations at squadron and wing level of the RAF's Tornado force in the 1980s and 1990s.

There are ample images in the book, mostly well positioned and well captioned.

Personally, I was most engrossed by Napier's ability to recreate sorties that occurred 20 years ago with a clarity, eye for detail and immediacy that made it feel like he was flying them right now. I don't doubt that there's some artistic license in use here (he doesn't say whether he kept all of his cockpit tapes, but I have to wonder how exactly he remembers the actual comm and radio transmissions from two decades prior), but as someone with a very small amount of fast jet passenger experience, to include over some of the Red Flag ranges he mentions, I was spellbound. His early descriptions of some of his Red Flag sorties are just mesmerising.

Had Napier self published this book, I'd have given it five stars. As it is, he has, in my view, been let down by his publisher. This book needs the gentle but skilled hand of a good aerospace editor to really elevate it to the next level. A small handful of Napier's stories are never completed, leaving the reader wondering what happened and why (one about a wingman experiencing airframe vibration is one such example). The chapters are dense walls of text that lack pacing, making it sometimes a bit of a chore to keep going despite the quality of writing (it would have been so easy to have added some natural breaks and created a more considered chapter structure, so I am at a loss to know why that never happened). And there's a regular switching of tenses that Napier uses as a device to contrast his narrative voice with his 'there I was' story telling voice - it's a good idea, but it's sometimes a bit clumsy and distracting (the publisher could have helped him to finesse it, I am sure). If it sounds like I am singling out the publisher quite a bit here, that's because I am. I am rapidly tiring of seeing publishers do the absolute minimum required of them to get these sort of books to print. It's bad for the author and it's bad for the reader.

Bottom line is that this is a great book. Buy it and enjoy it. And if Michael Napier writes another, buy that, too - I know that I will.

Great, very accurate read
By Amazon Customer
Fascinating book very well written and lots of interesting detail. I had the pleasure of working with Mike on 31 Squadron at RAF Bruggen, I was part of the ground crew at the same time that Mike was a pilot. I found the book 100% accurate on the events that I was also part of and it was very insightful to read about these events from the pilots perspective. We (the ground crew) would maintain the aircraft and hand them over to the aircrew without really knowing what happened in the time before they returned. All in all a great read and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know, not just what it was like flying a Tornado bomber during the cold war and gulf war, but also the training an RAF pilot has to go through along with the ups and downs of a proficient pilot.

Great book
By Jose Manuel Alvarez Marn
Used to aviation books written by Americans about American units and conflicts, this rare and excellently written book gets you into the cockpit of a British tornado through the cold war, red flags and some action in the Gulf.
Glad I got it.

Elements of Programming, by Alexander A. Stepanov, Paul McJones

“Ask a mechanical, structural, or electrical engineer how far they would get without a heavy reliance on a firm mathematical foundation, and they will tell you, ‘not far.’ Yet so-called software engineers often practice their art with little or no idea of the mathematical underpinnings of what they are doing. And then we wonder why software is notorious for being delivered late and full of bugs, while other engineers routinely deliver finished bridges, automobiles, electrical appliances, etc., on time and with only minor defects. This book sets out to redress this imbalance. Members of my advanced development team at Adobe who took the course based on the same material all benefited greatly from the time invested. It may appear as a highly technical text intended only for computer scientists, but it should be required reading for all practicing software engineers.”
 —Martin Newell, Adobe Fellow

“The book contains some of the most beautiful code I have ever seen.”
 —Bjarne Stroustrup, Designer of C++

“I am happy to see the content of Alex’s course, the development and teaching of which I strongly supported as the CTO of Silicon Graphics, now available to all programmers in this elegant little book.”
—Forest Baskett, General Partner, New Enterprise Associates

“Paul’s patience and architectural experience helped to organize Alex’s mathematical approach into a tightly-structured edifice—an impressive feat!”
—Robert W. Taylor, Founder of Xerox PARC CSL and DEC Systems Research Center

Elements of Programming provides a different understanding of programming than is presented elsewhere. Its major premise is that practical programming, like other areas of science and engineering, must be based on a solid mathematical foundation. The book shows that algorithms implemented in a real programming language, such as C++, can operate in the most general mathematical setting. For example, the fast exponentiation algorithm is defined to work with any associative operation. Using abstract algorithms leads to efficient, reliable, secure, and economical software.

This is not an easy book. Nor is it a compilation of tips and tricks for incremental improvements in your programming skills. The book’s value is more fundamental and, ultimately, more critical for insight into programming. To benefit fully, you will need to work through it from beginning to end, reading the code, proving the lemmas, and doing the exercises. When finished, you will see how the application of the deductive method to your programs assures that your system’s software components will work together and behave as they must.

The book presents a number of algorithms and requirements for types on which they are defined. The code for these descriptions—also available on the Web—is written in a small subset of C++ meant to be accessible to any experienced programmer. This subset is defined in a special language appendix coauthored by Sean Parent and Bjarne Stroustrup.

Whether you are a software developer, or any other professional for whom programming is an important activity, or a committed student, you will come to understand what the book’s experienced authors have been teaching and demonstrating for years—that mathematics is good for programming, and that theory is good for practice.

An Abstract Algebra of Programs
By Nicholas Charles Ralabate
"I believe that iterator theories are as central to Computer Science as theories of rings or Banach spaces are central to Mathematics. Every time I would look at an algorithm I would try to find a structure on which it is defined. So what I wanted to do was to describe algorithms generically. That's what I like to do. I can spend a month working on a well known algorithm trying to find its generic representation. So far, I have been singularly unsuccessful in explaining to people that this is an important activity. But, somehow, the result of the activity - STL - became quite successful." -Stepanov

I had been waiting for this book for a while, as I greatly enjoy Stepanov's unorthodox views on programming. His flat rejection of the object-oriented paradigm was what caught my attention, but he differed from the unwashed newsgroup naysayers in an important respspect -- he offered an alternative. The fact that his alternative seemed to involve applying concepts from the realm of abstract algebra to computer programming made me realize I would be spending a lot of time and thought catching up.

This is a short, but dense book. There is little trace of Knuth's sympathetic humor or Dijkstra's aesthetic passion. The material is presented as a series of definitions and sample programs, written in a programming language based on C++. Importantly, there are also exercises and projects throughout each chapter. At first attempt, these puzzlers seem to contain as much insight as the prose itself.

I look at this book as a combination of the two books that Stepanov is known to prescribe to his students, hyper-distilled into a slim few hundred pages:

"The books that I recommend to my students are The Art of Computer Programming by Donald Knuth, which is the great encyclopedia of programming techniques. ... It is something that they should keep studying for the rest of their lives. The other book that I urge my students to read is The Textbook of Algebra by George Chrystal. It is a massive two volume work covering most of elementary algebra. Sadly enough, nowadays even people with graduate degrees in Mathematics do not know most of the material in Chrystal."

More to the point, I look at this book as an intentional challenge. The preface urges the reader to consider why the material absent is absent and vice versa, a sentiment I had only seen in one other place -- Victor Vyssotsky's review of MacLane and Birkhoff. A challenge like that doesn't make for a pleasant exposition, seemingly trading approachability for a more mature understanding.

Stepanov has some great papers in the public domain -- if you are reading this review I highly reccomend seeking them out. Also see the Google Tech Talk "A Possible Future of Software Development" by Sean Parent. If you like those, you will love this.

A great book
By Bjarne Stroustrup
I have been wondering what to say about this book and now Peter G. Neumann said it better (see previous review). However, I can still say this: There are many good books, but few great ones. "Elements" is a great book in that it can change the way you think about programming in fundamental ways: If you "get it" programming will never be the same again for you.

Reading "Elements" requires maturity both with mathematics and with software development. Even then it is so different from most books on programming that it can be hard going. The frequent comparisons of "Elements" to Knuth's "The Art of Programming" is well earned.

From ACM Risks Forum, vol 25 no 74
By Peter G. Neumann
What could be one of the most important books for developers of low-risk
systems has come to my attention, and deserves your consideration if you are
serious about understanding the mathematical foundations of programming and
applying them sensibly to your practice. It is not an easy read, but it is
a very compelling approach. To support its mathematically oriented
crispness, the book includes the definition of a small but elegant C++
subset that has been crafted by Sean Parent and Bjarne Stroustrup for
illustrative use in the book. I believe this material should be taught
within all computer science curricula.

A long quote and a short one on the back jacket give an idea of what is
involved:

Ask a mechanical, structural, or electrical engineer how far they would
get without a heavy reliance on a firm mathematical foundation, and they
will tell you, `not far.' Yet so-called software engineers often practice
their art with little or no idea of the mathematical underpinnings of what
they are doing. And then we wonder why software is notorious for being
delivered late and full of bugs, while other engineers routinely deliver
finished bridges, automobiles, electrical appliances, etc., on time and
with only minor defects. This book sets out to redress this imbalance.
Members of my advanced development team at Adobe who took the course based
on the same material all benefited greatly from the time invested. It may
appear as a highly technical text intended only for computer scientists,
but it should be required reading for all practicing software engineers.
-- Martin Newell, Adobe Fellow

The book contains some of the most beautiful code I have ever seen.
-- Bjarne Stroustrup

The bottom of the inside cover suggests that through this book you will come
to understand that mathematics is good for programming, and theory is good
for practice. I applaud that sentiment.

Corrosion Behavior and Durability of Various Cements and Pozzolans: The Effect of Cement Type and Pozzolan on the Corrosion Behavior and Du

This work examines the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel (RC) embedded in concrete mixes of various types by incorporating both Ordinary Portland Cement (Type I) and Sulfate-Resistance Portland Cement (Type V) and Blends with Fly Ash (PFA) or Slag (GGBS). The RC specimens were exposed to wet-dry cycles of chloride and/or sulfate solutions. Theory predicts that under such conditions the electrode potentials of the steel can suffer the formation of anode and cathode regions that depend on cement type and the local environment, so localized corrosion may occur. The final results in this book concludes that using two concrete types in the same structure will lead to the preferential formation of anode and cathode sites. Moreover, this has implications for the durability of real structures whereas the steel, either through design or repair, is embedded in more than one concrete mix type. Furthermore, the results showed that green concrete - containing either 30% Pozzolan or 70% Slag ? had the best overall quality, durability and better performance than Portland cement concrete. This book will help professionals in Corrosion Control, Green Building and Sustainable Development.

The Illustrated Longitude: The True Story of the Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time, by Dava Sobel, Willia

A fully illustrated edition of the international best-seller Longitude.

The Illustrated Longitude recounts in words and images the epic quest to solve the greatest scientific problem of the eighteenth and three prior centuries: determining how a captain could pinpoint his ship's location at sea. All too often throughout the ages of exploration, voyages ended in disaster when crew and cargo were either lost at sea or destroyed upon the rocks of an unexpected landfall. Thousands of lives and the fortunes of nations hung on a resolution to the longitude problem.

To encourage a solution, governments established prizes for anyone whose method or device proved successful. The largest reward of 20,000-- truly a king's ransom-- was offered by Britain's Parliament in 1714. The scientific establishment-- from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton-- had been certain that a celestial answer would be found and invested untold effort in this pursuit. By contrast, John Harrison imagined and built the unimaginable: a clock that told perfect time at sea, known today as the chronometer. Harrison's trials and tribulations during his forty-year quest to win the prize are the culmination of this remarkable story.

The Illustrated Longitude brings a new and important dimension to Dava Sobel's celebrated story. It contains the entire original narrative of Longitude, redesigned to accompany 183 images chosen by William Andrewes-- from portraints of every important figure in the story to maps and diagrams, scientifc instruments, and John Harrison's remarkable sea clocks themselves. Andrewes's elegant captions and sidebars on scientific and historical events tell their own story of longitude, paralleling and illuminating Sobel's memorable tale.

Amazon.com Review
Dava Sobel's Longitude tells the story of how 18th-century scientist and clockmaker William Harrison solved one of the most perplexing problems of history--determining east-west location at sea. This lush, colorfully illustrated edition adds lots of pictures to the story, giving readers a more satisfying sense of the times, the players, and the puzzle. This was no obscure, curious difficulty--without longitude, ships often found themselves so far off course that sailors would starve or die of scurvy before they could reach port. When a nationally-sponsored contest offered a hefty cash prize to the person who could develop a method to accurately determine longitude, the race was on. In the end, the battle of accuracy--and wills--fought between Harrison and arch-rival Maskelyne was ruthless and dramatic, worthy of a Hollywood feature film. Longitude's story is surprising and fascinating, offering a window into the past, before Global Positioning Satellites made it look easy. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
This look at the scientific quest to find a way for ships at sea to determine their longitude was a PW bestseller for eight weeks.

From School Library Journal
YA?Opening with a chapter that outlines what follows, Sobel whets readers' appetites for hearing the colorful details of the search for a way for mariners to determine longitude. In an age when ships' stores were limited and scurvy killed many a seaman, missing a landfall often meant death?as, of course, did running aground. Sobel provides a lively treatment of the search through the centuries for a ready answer to the longitude problem, either through using lunar tables or through making an accurate clock not subject to the vicissitudes of weather and ocean conditions. Her account includes not only scientific advances, but also the perseverance, pettiness, politics, and interesting anecdotes that figured in along the way (it wasn't limes, for example, that first prevented scurvy on English ships, but sauerkraut). A pleasing mixture of basic science, cultural history, and personality conflicts makes this slim volume a winner.?Judy McAloon, Potomac Library, Prince William County, VA

One of the most fascinating books I have read
By Gloria
In the age of GPS it is hard to believe that there was a time when sailors could not navigate the seas in safety. This book is so interesting and easy to read, yet it explains the discovery of how to determine Longitude in a way that is fascinating for adults and excellent for young teenagers as well. I always have three copies of the Illustrated book on hand. I give them as gifts all the time. I read this book while I was traveling and I had the opportunity to visit the The Royal Naval Museum, in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, England, that houses these wonderful clocks. One of my favorite books.

Mighty companion to "drawing The Line" by Edwin Dnason and "Mason & Dixon" by Thiomas Pynchon:
By Clifford L. Baker
I first read the Danson book, thinking this was the book Mark Knopfler based his "Sailing to Philadelphia" on. Afterwards I learned it was the Pynchon book that birthed the song. Longitude offers descriptive history of clocks and astronomy as two methods for finding longitude, which was so sought after for British shipping and sailing. Having traveled to London, I spent one day visiting the Royal Observatory in Greenwich after reading these books. Returning home after that experience, I was urgently wanted to re-read both books again.
Sorbel writes enthusiastically and holds attention without including extraneous detail which might bog down the reading, and after reading Longitude the second time- now I want to go back to the observatory and also to the clock museum in Guildhall, which I did not see.
The science of positioning on the Earth is fascinating and anyone who finds global positioning and astronomy intriguing should read this book

An absolute joy to read!
By VickChick
Although I stumbled across this book after I had seen the television production based on it back in the mid nineties, starring Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons, I didn't actually buy it and read it until I had watched the show again on Amazon recently. It's disappointing that there are no illustrations or photographs of Harrison's marine clocks, save the illustration of H-4 on the cover of the electronic edition of the book. But despite that the book was a pure joy to read and I appreciated the author's use of humor in her writing, which to me makes any book just that much better to read, even though it is indeed a rather serious subject. My hat goes off to Dava Sobel for making the subject of longitude extremely interesting to read about.

Review
"Greenwood (English, Hiram College) tackles the fictional works of Cormac McCarthy and provides readers with a thorough discourse of the common themes, writing style and recommended works from this Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and playwright. The author discusses ten of McCarthy's books, ranging from 1965's The Orchard Keeper to 2007's The Road, and provides discussion questions and factual sidebars to each title. A short biography and critical analysis of McCarthy is also included, along with discussions of his connection to pop culture, current events and the Internet." - Reference & Research Book News

A solid overview for anyone reading Cormac McCarthy.
By Richard L. Pangburn
Willard P. Greenwood's READING CORMAC MCCARTHY is an excellent new overview of McCarthy's published novels to date.

It is 141 pages, counting preface, eighteen chapters of text, a bibliography titled "Resources," and an index. It has a turtleback cover with a picture of old Cormac sitting easily, half his face in light, half in shadow. There are study questions after each chapter. His sources well represent the critical literature available.

This is the third in a series entitled "The Pop Lit Book Club," and previous were READING BARBARA KINGSOLVER and READING AMY TAN. Hopefully other volumes will follow.

I don't personally agree with several of Greenwood's interpretations--he sees Suttree as mainly "McCarthy's homage to alcoholism," for instance--but any Cormac McCarthy scholar might present his own educated views in such a volume.

If I were to improve the book, the first thing I would add would be a disclaimer that there are many interpretations of McCarthy's work, not just those presented therein.

Chapter 19 is "What Do I Read Next?" with some good suggestions to readers wanting more of the same quality if not the same worldview. Greenwood mentions many of the same books that we have recommended at the Cormac McCarthy Society over the years--MOBY DICK, OF WOLVES AND MEN, THE BIRTH OF TRAGFDY, ABSALOM, ABSALOM!--very good books indeed. And he says:

"Reading the epics of Homer will make McCarthy's work more accessible, but most important, these ancient works are as relevant today as they were when they were created. They represent a continuity of the human excperience that transcends time.'

"...The second section of McCarthy's novel, THE CROSSING, opens with the sentence: 'Doomed enterprises forever divide lives into the then and the now." To understand why some of McCarthy's male protagonists seem to embrace futile or lost causes, it is essential to reference the ILIAD, and especially, its doomed young male warrior, Achilles.'

"Homer's richly imagined and gifted hero is timeless because of his rebellious romantic tendencies. Achilles holds himself to a strict code of idiosyncratic ethics that will not be influenced by any outside forces...Achilles doomed nature and how he faces his destiny ennobles him and his struggle...The ODYSSEY contains the character of ODYSSEUS, who serves as the archetypes for many McCarthy characters..."

All in all, one of the very best overviews of McCarthy to found anywhere.
