A beginner text at best
By T. Gibbs
Quite a few reviews refer to this workbook as an excellent intermediate source for applied spatial statistics, however, I couldn't disagree more. If you can successfully navigate the help sections included with your ESRI ArcGIS installation, you simply DO NOT need this book. Sure the data that is provided is helpful, but it is not remarkably different from the data provided in the free tutorials available through ESRI. If anything, this text lacks the theoretical framework necessary to understand the statistical operations, as well as any guidance for interpretation of the results,... which is possibly the single most difficult aspect of spatial statistics in the first place. It also provides no help for more advanced statistic tests such as exploratory regression or ordinary least squares regression. If you must support ESRI press, start with Andy Mitchell's "The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2" to develop a solid framework (though this text also glosses over many important details). For a more thorough and relevant source try the ESRI Spatial Statistics Resource page at: [...]. Make sure and watch the videos a few times through and work though the tutorials before you start with your own data. Also, for a truly intermediate/advanced-level set of tutorials and tools try Luc Anselin's Geoda program relased through Arizona State University: [...]. While it has a steep learning curve, it is nowhere as obtuse as R or CrimeStat and nicely supplements the tools available through ArcGIS. Best of all, its free and well documented!

"A Eitrige, an Bugl und a 16er-Blech - oba dschenifa"

Prelude to Catastrophe: FDR's Jews and the Menace of Nazism, by Robert Shogan

Franklin Roosevelt was the first great hero of American Jews. FDR's promise of economic and social justice was consonant with the mainstays of Jewish culture and with the ethos of the Old Testament and the prophets. And of course these themes were especially resonant during the desperate days of the Great Depression.

The Jews who so deeply admired Roosevelt made up the richest, most influential Jewish community in the world, leaders in government, commerce, and the arts. Yet by the time Franklin Roosevelt died in office, six million European Jews had been murdered by the Nazis while neither FDR nor American Jews lifted much more than a finger to help them. How did the president, the nation he led, and American Jewry allow this to happen? There is no simple answer, but Robert Shogan seeks a partial explanation by examining the behavior of a handful of Jews, so close to Roosevelt and supposedly so influential that they could be considered "the president's Jews."

Most prestigious was Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis. Next was Felix Frankfurter, Harvard law professor and later Supreme Court justice. Sam Rosenman, FDR's chief speechwriter from the time he was governor of New York. Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau was an old Dutchess County neighbor of Roosevelt's. Benjamin V. Cohen crafted the major financial reforms of the early New Deal. Their actions, and often inaction, illuminate the strengths and limits of interest-group politics, the system invented by FDR that dominated American politics for the remainder of the century. Taken broadly, the response of the president's Jews to the Nazi threat illustrates with heartbreaking intensity the dilemma of politics—the conflict between conscience and self-interest, between principle and expediency. With 8 pages of black-and-white photographs.

From Booklist
American Jews were among the most ardent supporters of Roosevelt and his New Deal policies. Jews also occupied prominent positions within all three branches of the federal government, and Roosevelt counted at least two as close advisers. Yet Shogan maintains that those Jews with the power to influence Roosevelt’s decisions were at best ineffective, and at worst passive, in aiding European Jews as Nazi persecution intensified. The author, a former political correspondent for Newsweek, acknowledges that the chances to save Jews were minimal once the war began. Still, he stands on the opinion that the U.S. should have bombed the rail lines leading to the death camps. However, in examining the prewar actions of American Jews, he illustrates how they failed to help their co-religionists find refuge as doors in Europe and the Americas were slamming shut. Shogan suggests insecurities and fears of appearing too assertive may have inhibited “FDR’s Jews” from taking a more aggressive stance. Just how influential these Jews actually were is debatable, but Shogan has shed useful light on a painful dilemma for American Jews. --Jay Freeman

Review
With close ties to FDR, a number of Jews seemed to exercise considerable influence in the United States during the New Deal era. The president's Jews, however, were largely silent as Hitler murdered more than 6 million of their European brethren. In this troubling and compelling book, Shogan shows how the silence of good men, indeed, helped evil to triumph. (Benjamin Ginsberg, author of The Fatal Embrace: Jews and the State)

Emphasizing political opportunism, evasion, and denial, Shogan examines the efforts of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his most important advisers to come to grips with the lethal anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany. His biographical assessments, some of which may appear etched in acid, will add to the continuing conflict over whether the President and those around him could have prevented the Holocaust or at least saved multitudes from its genocidal fury. (Alonzo L. Hamby, Ohio University)

Shogan gives old questions a new spin by examining the actions of five men he calls 'FDR's Jews': Supreme Court Justices Frankfurter and Brandeis, speechwriter Rosenman, Treasury Secretary Morgenthau, New Deal lawyer Cohen, and Rabbi Wise, leader of the World Jewish Congress. (Publishers Weekly)

Shogan focuses on the few powerful Jews in President Franklin Roosevelt's circle of advisers. . . . If Shogan's Prelude to Catastrophe is the story of a few powerful Jewish men, it is also a lesson in the actual limits of Jewish influence in American life. (Kansas City Star)

Recently, a new book directs its scholarly attention exclusively to those Jews who, in effect, served as an informal Judenrat for the Roosevelt administration when it came to the fate of European Jewry. In these 285 pages, Shogan turns his pen on those prominent Jews who came together, both formerly and informally, to represent FDR's political interests within the American Jewish community. Additionally, these same Jews falsely represented American Jewry's interests within the halls of power in Washington. (The Jewish Star)

American Jewry will never cease to be haunted by the question: Could we have done more to rescue the victims of the Nazi Holocaust? It's a question that has gained new resonance in our time, as the rulers of Iran race to complete a nuclear weapon. And it's the question that occupies center place in a new book by the veteran reporter Robert Shogan. Prelude to Catastrophe offers a series of profiles of Jews who held positions of special political influence during the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt. (COMMENTARY)

To the Jewish community of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a hero. He was seen by the Jews as their modern day Moses. For the first time in modern political history Jews were given a respectful seat in the world of politics—FDR even gave them a seat around his table. He was a rarity, the first president of the United States to allow Jews access to the inner sanctum of the White House. During the war FDR's privileged Jews were involved in a constant struggle to understand whether they were to pursue a Jewish or an American agenda. They knew how dangerous it was to split their allegiance. But they also knew full well that the Jews of Europe were being murdered and that the United States was doing nothing to stop the genocide. What should the president of the United States be asked to do? The Jews were caught in a cult of gratitude. Almost everyone was silent on the issue. FDR's go-to rabbi was Steven Wise, a close friend. FDR's chief speechwriter was Samuel Rosenman, who had been his speechwriter since Roosevelt was governor of New York. The author of the all-important New Deal was Benjamin V. Cohen. Henry Morgenthau was an old time neighbor of the Roosevelt family and as Secretary of the Treasury he became the first Jewish cabinet member. The only person who really pushed the president and even then only by writing a report—never face to face—was Henry Morgenthau. The Special Report to the President on the Murder of the Jews of Europe, written by Morgenthau's assistants, did, however, stimulate the creation of the Bermuda Conference and the War Refugee Board. But it was too little and too late to save most of the European Jews. The rest, as they say, is history.

He now teaches in the Washington Center of Johns Hopkins University and lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

An outrageous defense of Roosevelt
By Ed Gehead
I find it amazing that Shogan defends Roosevelt's deliberate inaction to rescue European Jews by placing the blame on Jewish advisers. Roosevelt clearly had personal knowledge of Hitler's persecution of the Jews no later than Kristallnacht. Yet he refused to allow them entry to this country. He clearly had knowledge of the desperation of the Jews who attempted to flee Germany on the ship St Louis. Yet he would not allow the ship to dock in Florida. He was among the first to meet with escapees reporting on the mass murder of Jews during the war. Yet he did less than nothing. By this work and others Shogan shows that he is a die-hard apologist for a president whose actual history establishes that he was a moral coward and deserving of opprobrium rather than excused on the backs of a few feckless Jews. What I find depressing is that, despite historical disclosures, most Jews still admire Roosevelt and listen to historical spinners like Shogan. I give this book two stars because it accurately points out the weakness of Roosevelt's Jewish advisers, now used by Shogan to give Roosevelt cover for his moral bankruptcy.

Bystanders to the Holocaust?
By Pierre Sauvage
We will never know how the Roosevelt administration--including the then casually antisemitic State Department--might have been affected by determined, large-scale efforts by American Jews and non-Jews to pressure the government to react to the obviously desperate plight of the Jews of Europe, especially after it became known in the U.S. in 1942 that the Nazis had embarked on a policy of mass murder. But what author Robert Shogan sharply delineates, in this riveting and fearless account of those years, is the fact that key American Jewish leaders had other priorities that impaired their willingness to seek ways to impede the monstrous crime--or even to bring attention to it.

Placing a relentless and detailed focus for the first time on prominent American Jews who had strong ties to the Roosevelt Administration, Shogan provides the essential context--Jewish, psychological, historical, political--without which there can be no full understanding of what happened here. The vividly (if succinctly) underscored efforts of the maverick Peter Bergson and the "Bergson Group," as well as the savvy account of Jewish adviser David Niles' post-war maneuvering to obtain Truman administration support for the creation of the state of Israel, powerfully illustrate that where there's a will, there may be a way.

Roosevelt Among the Jews
By Elena Estivez
Award-winning journalist for Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times, Robert Shogan, has hit a historical home run with this book. He details the complex relationship between the always-devious and often-unprincipled Franklin D. Roosevelt and the prominent Jews who served as his chief advisors during his unprecedented four-term sojourn in the White House.
Who were "Roosevelt's Jews?" Shogan explains, "FDR's Jews had no mandate to speak for or to the Jewish community. Initially their religion was merely coincidental to their relationship with Roosevelt. But as the Nazi menace to European Jews steadily mounted, their identity as Jews brought an added dimension to their relationship with the president and gave them in the eyes of many Jews outside Washington enlarged importance."
"The most prestigious was Louis D. Brandeis, whom Woodrow Wilson had named as the first Jewish Supreme Court justice, and who as a sitting justice of the high court found occasion to advise the president and others in the executive branch--despite his professed devotion to the principle of judicial propriety. Next in prominence was Felix Frankfurter, Harvard law professor and early Roosevelt confidant, who would not join the federal government until six years into his presidency when Roosevelt appointed him to the Supreme Court. In somewhat similar circumstances was Sam Rosenman, officially a New York state judge, courtesy of an appointment by then Governor Roosevelt, whose true significance law in his role as FDR's chief speechwriter and a leading general adviser. Next im importance, though often overlooked by outsider Jews, was the only cabinet member among the President's Jews, Treasury Secretary Henry A. Morgenthau. An old Dutchess County (New York) neighbor of Roosevelt's, in this group Morgenthau was probably closest to the president personally. Finally, there was Benjamin V. Cohen, a relative newcomer to Roosevelt's inner circle, who would gain access to the Oval Office because of his skill as a legislative craftsman."
Rounding out the "kitchen kehilla" was another old supporter of Woodrow Wilson's, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, founder of Manhattan's Free Synagogue and a leader in the city's anti-Tammany reform movement. Although friendly with FDR, Rabbi Wise was also the president's harshest critic in the group. Rabbi Wise doubted FDR's commitment to the liberal cause and once told Felix Frankfurter that Roosevelt was "all clay and no granite."
Yet it was Rabbi Wise who cemented the USA's "Jewish vote" to the Democratic Party. Shogan writes, "In 1940, as in 1936, Wise once again worried about the impression among the public of a Jewish vote for Roosevelt. This despite the fact that the Jewish vote for FDR was exactly what he hoped to achieve by his campaigning."
"'There are more Jews perhaps who are interested in this support for Roosevelt, voting for him on the ground that he is friendly to or good for the Jews,' (Wise) wrote to the American Jewish Congress, who had expressed concern on this issue. FDR's 'friendliness to Jews,' Wise argued 'has consisted in nothing more than his championing of the cause of human freedom as against the aggressor nations.'"
"Whatever the underlying cause, Jews gave Roosevelt an estimated 85 percent of their vote in 1936 and an even more robust 90 percent in 1940."
Shogan covers some of the more obscure crises of the 1930s, including the Integralista uprising in Brazil in 1937 and Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes's plan to created a Jewish homeland in southern Alaska in 1938.
Despite efforts like these--and Churchill's goofy 1943 plan to create "a parking lot for Jews" on the then-Dutch owned island of Sumatra until the Allies could cajole or bully the Arabs into giving up Palestine--the rescue efforts of the "kitchen kehilla" came to naught. If nothing else, Roosevelt was the consumnate politician, and there was no way he was ever going to tamper with the restrictive U.S. immigration laws. No way was he going to hand the Republicans the hot-button issue of increased refugee immigration, particularly with the national unemployment rate still up around 20 percent.
"Meanwhile, Wise had to worry that homegrown anti-Semitism seemed to grow more virulent" in the USA all through the 1930s and 1940s. "In May 1939 a meeting sponsored by the Christian Front and other anti-Semitic organizations gathered in a space fewer than a hundred yards from Carnegie Hall...to extol the virtue of a 'Christian America.' Some in the audience of more than seven hundred interrupted speakers with shouts of 'throw the Jews out of Christian America.' A hundred (NYPD) police officers patrolled the meeting hall and the streets outside to prevent disorder," while the anti-Semites sang in unison, "Hang Rabbi Wise to a flagpole! Lynch Rabbi Wise!"
Amazingly, this incident was not the high-water-mark of American anti-Semitism. In December 1944, the Gallup Poll revealed that over 50 percent of its respondents had described Jews as "dangerous." On September 7, 1949, the anti-Semitic feeling of the period finally burst into violence with an actual pogrom in Fishkill, N.Y., an incident so serious that then-Gov. Thomas E. Dewey had to declare martial law.
"'And the police didn't interfere,' Wise complained" of the May 1939 Carnegie Hall riot. Though, as Shogan points out, "it is not clear what the police might have done to prevent citizens from nonviolently exercising their First Amendment rights."
A later Democratic president--William Jefferson Clinton-- said it best, Rabbi Wise..."Politics is a contact sport."

Magna est veritas
By Luc REYNAERT
Besides literary reviews (Shelley, Turgenev, Ibsen, Swift), B. Russell tackles in these short comments the crucial problems of our world: freedom, power, science, war and peace, truth or the real nature of mankind.

Political, economic and mental freedom
Holders of power, always and everywhere, are indifferent to the good or evil of those who have no power, except in so far as they are restrained by fear. Therefore, mankind needs democracy in order to break the monopoly of political power. Liberty cannot be secured without democratic elections. But within democracy, there should be tolerance against minorities cemented in laws.
Economic freedom doesn't mean `laissez-faire'. It consists in freeing man from economic compulsion. If a man is law-abiding and willing to work, he must not be allowed to starve. Laissez-faire cannot secure this result.
Mental freedom means freedom of opinion, free discussion, free inquiry and free speculation. Education should promote the courage of dissent and free inquiry, and should combat the forces of militant ignorance.

Science
Science in itself is ethically neutral. It confers power, but for evil as much as for good. It has always had an intimate and sinister connection with war. If one wishes to exterminate the human race, it will show one how to do it. But, if Pythagoras, Galileo and James Watt had not existed, daily life would be profoundly different from what it is.

War and peace
Militarists have often been able to achieve their aims. History is a long series of imperialist conquests. Today, some who profess democracy admit that total war might end in total death. They are prepared to see the human race destroy itself rather than forgo the pleasures of fanaticism.
But, wouldn't it be better, instead of producing heaps of weapons of mass destruction, to lessen the load of poverty and malnutrition and to invest in real innovations in order to make the world happier?

Mankind and hope
Mankind descends from progenitors who exterminated their enemies, occupied their lands and grew rich. Man's most effective ferocity is directed against his own species.
But, B. Russell never lost hope: mankind can prosper and create a happy world, but only by unswerving courage in the pursuit of the truth, his shining goddess.

Dangerous idea
B. Russell wants to install a world government with a monopoly for all armed forces.
As K. Jaspers has said, `a world government with centralized power over the whole globe, holding the monopoly of all means of violence unchecked and uncontrolled by other sovereign powers, is not only a nightmare of tyranny, but also the end of all political life.'

This formidable book, written by a superb free and independent mind, contains also incisive sarcastic satires and brilliant parables.
A must read, certainly for all B. Russell fans.

A superb collection of essays
By Viraga
Bertrand Russell often gathered essays he thought would have lasting value, and published them as collections. This book not only has essays, but the text of talks he gave on the BBC. The topics are wide and disparate. He begins with books (and their authors) that made a deep impression on him while he was in his formative years. Then follow essays on politics, starting off with "What is Freedom?" and "What is Democracy?" -- two basic questions that many people don't even think about. The "Divertissement" section contains pieces of fiction. Russell stated that he found fiction a useful medium to express ideas he half-believed in, but had no firm grounds for belief. The last section is on "Peace and War," and includes the famous Vienna and Manchester addresses on nuclear bombs. His style is incisive and pithy as usual. If you like Russell, you should not miss reading this book.

The Complete World of Human Evolution (Second Edition) (The Complete Series), by Chris Stringer, Peter Andrews

Human domination of the earth is now so complete that it is easy to forget how recently our role in the history of the planet began.

The earliest apes evolved around twenty million years ago, yet Homo sapiens has existed for a mere 160,000 years. In the intervening period, dozens of species of early ape and human have lived and died out, leaving behind the fossilized remains that have helped to make the detailed picture of our evolution revealed here.

Since this book was first published in 2005 there have been exciting new developments in the story of ape and human evolution, and the authors take account of them in this revised edition. The big gap in the fossil record in Africa is beginning to be filled with the discovery of several new species of apes in Kenya and Ethiopia that date from ten to nine million years ago. There are new discoveries of Australopithecus, updates on the dating of hominin sites, results of new DNA analyses, and much more.

Illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and reconstruction drawings, this is essential reading for anyone interested in human origins.

A Very Good Summary of Human Evolution for Non-Scientists
By Edward F. Strasser
This book is actually about the evolution of apes, starting with Proconsul and working up to all of the living apes, including us. But it is we who are at center stage, with the others in supporting roles.

The book starts with an extended section on how fossils and evolution are studied. This includes how dates are estimated, how fossils are formed, and how environments and climate fit into the picture. Then there are descriptions of some dig sites. The next section, titled "The Fossil Evidence", covers many fossils from our past, along with some analysis. The final section, "Interpreting the Evidence", is mostly about what the evidence tell us regarding behavior, especially tool use. This will be the payoff for many readers, since it is what makes us human.

There is little technical language; when it is necessary to use a technical term, it is usually explained, for example "humerus (upper arm bone)". There is no way to avoid using the scientific names of the fossil species, but the translations, such as "Greek ape" for "Graecopithecus", will help.

The text is divided into bite-size pieces of 2-6 pages, each with several illustrations. The pieces have such titles as "Dating the Past", "The Neanderthals", "The First Americans". The illustrations consist of photos and drawings, mostly in color, as well as graphs and charts. It's not quite a coffee table book, but I did find myself a few times thumbing through to look at the pictures.

Obviously, a book with such a large scope can't cover any particular topic in any detail. But if you want more information on something, you can Google it. Instead, this book brings everything into one picture, so to speak, showing how the pieces relate to each other. It is a fine introduction or overview for any interested non-scientist.

The family album
By Stephen A. Haines
Among science's "throwaway" lines, few have achieved the status of Charles Darwin's. When "The Origin of Species" was published, he dropped a teasing line about human ancestry at the very end: "Light will be thrown on the origins of man . . ." For over a generation after his death, the most significant human fossil proved a forgery. Stringer and Andrews have updated the record. In doing so, they've given us a finely crafted and superbly produced account of our ancestry. The term "world" is significant, as they display fossils, artefacts and the digs where these items were found from the southern tip of Africa to the edge of South America.

Breaking the study into three segments, the authors relate the history of archaeology, illustrating the evolutionary picture and the tools that detail it. They explain what the fossil evidence demonstrates about our ancestors, primate through hominid to human. Finally, they trace the path of our ancestors' expansion out of Africa into Asia, Australia, Europe and the Western Hemisphere. The running theme of the book is that we belong to the ape family. The primates have a long, diverse history, which firmly set our roots. From African origins, the apes sent emigrants into Asia and Europe. The hominin apes followed those paths and further. Human evolution didn't cease merely because our species inhabited most of the planet. The authors note the complexity of evolutionary forces and caution those who feel there is some "directionality" in our rise. Species survival must reflect knowledge of our roots.

As an enhancement to explaining how data about our evolution has been found and assessed, the authors have selected several sites of major importance. These digs range from the famous Olduvai Gorge excavations of the Leakey family to the Boxgrove site on the south coast of Britain. Each site is historically described and depicted with location and detailed maps. The teams have a say and the techniques involved in revealing the evidence of our past are explained. Analytical methods are related, particularly as they involve the sites. Of major interest is the placing of the site's past environmental in its palaeontological context. There are copious photographs of the site area, the fossils and other artefacts gleaned. It's impossible to see the workers on the digs without wondering how many of them will go on to make significant finds of their own in some new location.

The authors are meticulous in presenting the maximum amount of information possible in a limited space. There are morphological comparisons - skulls, legs and feet, hands and, of course, teeth - of various primates. The illustrations indicate how the passage of time modified structures and what the changes represent. Teeth and jaws, the dietary indicators, are given close, but not overmuch, attention. Among the many examples, a skull from Turkey, "Ankarapithecus meteai" is one of the science's "head scratchers". Although clearly an ape from an ancient time, the skull bears many anomalous characteristics. It may be an ancestor of today's orang utan. Among other mysteries related to this find is that its teeth appear to be closer to the human, than to the ape line.

Although at first glance, this book may appear almost "coffee-table" in its format and its rich illustrative material, it is a compilation of many serious studies. Although topics that have aroused debate are discussed, the sometimes acrimonious exchanges have been mercifully omitted. There is little in the way of speculation here, and the evidence is handled with respect for the work underlying it. The "Further Reading" section is adequate, relying more on books than research papers or field studies, but is fully up to date to the time of publication. The book is a fine addition to any collection of human evolutionary accounts. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Great introduction to this subject
By Paul Mallory
I recommend that one read an introductory text on biological evolution before going into this book, but even without that backgroud "The Complete World of Human Evolution" is a great way to learn about apparent human evolution. The authors incorporate a lot of charts, graphs, and pictures to illuminate the field of paleoanthropology for the educated reader who has no formal background in the field. I liked how the authors introduced the academic study of paleoanthropology to the reader, as well as briefly discussing a handful of important archaeological sites. They discuss primate anatomy and evolution and how this relates to human evolution. In the middle portion they discuss each genus and/or species and how they fit into the entire picture. The final portions discuss the role genetics plays in our understanding of human evolution and migrations. The tone is mildly academic but if one knows how to read there shouldn't be a problem. Again, I particularly enjoyed this book because of the pictures and drawings of fossils, archaeological sites, etc., but they are by no means a crutch for the authors. They elucidate modern ideas about the subject, and they readily admit it when there isn't a consensus about a particular point. Admittedly, the authors believe what they know and one can tell that in their tone. There is also a nice bibliography but I found it to be a little dated. I would have liked to have seen more up-to-date resources about how the nonspecialist reader can find out about new finds and discoveries. Overall, if one is interested in this subject, one can start here.

Beautiful and Practical - A Terrific Book You'll Love
By Abigail
Making an Impression is a beautiful book and is totally useful as well. The photos are amazing, giving you a glimpse into Geninne's gorgeous home and studio. The text is very easy to read, not overly technical, but still highly detailed. The book opens flat due to the binding which makes it easier to put on your worktable while you are carving. After a techniques section there are lots of projects showing you ways to use the stamps you carve. The back of the book has templates to trace if you'd like to carve stamps using Geninne's motifs, or you can carve stamps of your own design.

I carved my first stamp last night, using the instructions in this book, and now I'm totally addicted. This is a new craft for me and I'm in love thanks to Geninne's beautiful book!

Best Stamp & Design Book!
By Roberta L. Payne
First off...if you are the least bit interested in making your own stamps, order this book right now! It's the best book I've seen written on stamp making. I've followed Geninne's blog for sometime now and always thought her artwork to be wonderful. I pre-ordered the book as soon as I saw it was available and just received it yesterday. I read the entire book!!! Yes, read each page!!! Geninne's book has so many tips, motifs and templates that you won't know where to start first! But she'll help you with that as well! Just start at the beginning of the book and follow along! That's exactly what I plan on doing!!

For anyone who has been thinking about trying stamp carving ,go for it! I have carved some and enjoyed it in the past but now I am certainly going to do more. A really beautiful book, with tons of unique ideas. find her blog on line , and discover a delightful artist who is willing to share her talent and techniques. P.S. the carving process is not hard to do.

What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful, by Marshall Goldsmith, Mark Reiter

What’s holding you back? Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. Perhaps one small flaw–a behavior you barely even recognize–is the only thing that’s keeping you from where you want to be.

Who can help? Marshall Goldsmith is an expert at helping global leaders overcome their sometimes unconscious annoying habits and attain a higher level of success. His one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag. But, in this audiobook, you get Marshall’s great advice without the hefty fee!

What is the solution? The Harvard Business Review asked Goldsmith, “What is the most common problem faced by the executives that you coach?” Inside, he answers this question by discussing not only the key beliefs of successful leaders, but also the behaviors that hold them back. He addresses the fundamental problems that often come with success–and offers ways to attack these problems. Goldsmith outlines twenty habits commonly found in the corporate environment and provides a systematic approach to helping you achieve a positive change in behavior.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book—such as learning to listen or letting go of the past—his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. (Jan. 2)

From Booklist
By now, the CEO as celebrity is old hat. (Just start counting the books from former company heads.) That goes for the executive-recruiter-cum-president-makers. What has yet to be explored--until now--is the celebrity business coach, the individual who helps C-level executives correct flaws, whether invisible or public. A frequent interviewee in major business magazines like Fortune, Goldsmith, with the sage help and advice of his collaborator Reiter, pens a self-help career book, filled with disguised anecdotes and candid dialogue, all soon slated for bestsellerdom. His steps in coaching for success are simple, honest, without artifice: gather feedback from appropriate colleagues and cohorts, determine which behaviors to change (and remember, Goldsmith specifically focuses on behavior, not skills or knowledge), apologize, advertise, listen, thank, follow up, and practice feed-forward. Admittedly, this shrewd organizational psychologist only works with leaders he knows will listen, follow advice, and change--especially considering that he doesn't receive fees until improvements are secure and visible. On the other hand, these are words and processes anyone will benefit from, whether wannabe manager or senior executive. Barbara Jacobs

Misleading title; should be called "how to be less of a jerk"
By Alex
I suppose it's my own fault for not researching this book more carefully. Based on the title, I thought it would be about how the habits or activities that lead to success in lower levels of a person's career might become less important or even limiting later on in their career, and how to deal with that. Like how a manager needs to act differently from an individual contributor, or how a middle manager needs to act differently from a line manager. That's not what this book is about. This book is about how talented people who are arrogant jerks can become nicer in order to progress in their careers. That's useful if it's what you're looking for, but it's not what I was hoping to find.

As a corollary, I also felt the author perceived the world with a "cop's fallacy". Police officers sometimes assume everyone in a certain neighborhood or of a certain demographic is scum, because they are only called in to deal with crime, so most people they deal with in that neighborhood or demographic are criminals. Much in the same way, Goldsmith seems to believe that all successful people are arrogant and overconfident, when the truth is more likely that successful people who are not hugely arrogant do not lead their employers to hire a consultant like Goldsmith to fix their behavioral issues, so he doesn't interact with them.

Some common sense, a lot of reinforcement
By Rubane
A manager at my work recommended I read this book this based on my reviews and feedback. I manage projects and small teams at work and would not consider myself a 'full fledged manager', but a lot of the books contents were applicable to the issues I was running into. The book itself is very easy to read and is targetted more at managers/higher-ups with lots of anecdotes, sports analogies, and a lot of repetition.

In a nutshell, this book is about optimizing interpersonal relationships from a leadership level/perspective. It assume you're already good at your job, but you want to get better and 'smooth out' the rough edges. It doesn't guarantee advancement, but more so gives you options on items to work on and improve. He has a lot of stories where improvement was captured in 12-18 months, but also focused on upper management where there is quite a bit of autonomy/control over implementing these sorts of processes.

I expect most folks that read this book will not find any of the concepts truly groundbreaking or new, but it does help reinforce how to recognize flaws not just in others, but ourselves, and gives relatively sound advice on how to address the flaws. Again, nothing trutly ground breaking since the work still needs to be done by yourself to identify the flaw, accept it, and then actually do something about it.

The good thing for me is that I've known about some of my flaws and have attempted to work on them, but haven't been making much headway on my own. Reading this book helped me think about my behaviour actively so I could work to improve it and gave me ideas on how to improve and avoid other behaviour traps.

Exceptional
By Reasonable Reviewer
There is an old saying that it is not failure that trips us up, it is success.

Mr. Goldsmith's book certainly bears that out.

The fundamental premise of the book is that highly successful people can get caught in ruts that are invisible to them, but painfully obvious to those around them. In turn, these ruts prevent success at the current level and further upward mobility.

Goldsmith points out that successful people tend to spend more time contemplating their successes and not focusing on their failures. Successful people then often miss the opportunity for self improvement that might come from a more unvarnished look at one's own performance.

The book includes a myriad of examples and some great, common sense insights.

I highly recommend this book.

In service,

Rich
