Reliable recipes from a dog expert

This was a timely purchase for me because the other day I was at the supermarket looking for a treat for my dog and I actually took the time to read all of the ingredients on the manufactured treats. Well, I was utterly disgusted and refused to buy any of those so-called treats! To start with, “mechanically reclaimed meat” is gruesome, let alone the amount of colours, additives and preservatives they also packed in. It seems the best solution is to make my own treats at home.

I was really grateful for the section on foods which are toxic to dogs. Last year I had the unfortunate experience of giving my dog part of an old leftover muffin and, only after he had eaten it all, remembering that it had sultanas in it. I felt so guilty! Worse, though, was that when I mentioned it to the rest of the household, no-one else even knew that dogs shouldn’t eat grapes. It’s absolutely vital that we all know which foods are toxic to dogs so that we can keep our pets healthy.

As for foods which are good for dogs, I was pleased to see that yoghurt is okay. My dog loves natural yoghurt and I often give him a spoonful, but I was never really sure whether or not it was healthy. What a relief!

I can’t wait to try the recipes in this book. Knowing that the author – Vikk Simmons – is a long-time dog lover and owner, not to mention blogger and book author, gives me the confidence that I can really trust the information in this book. Highly recommended!

I like knowing the author makes these treats for her own ...

I like knowing the author makes these treats for her own pets. She addresses the topics of nutrition, health and a pet's age. My old guy is difficult at 15 years of age and he likes his new senior treats. Ms. Simmons has written a recipe book filled with tidbits of the do's and don't's about pet treats. Even if you have no oven, there are no-bake recipes. The book has something for everyone and their furry kids.

Recipes are easy, but at the expense of fresh ingredients

Many of the recipes call for premade baby food (which contains preservatives and sometimes even ingredients that can be harmful to dogs) or wheat flour (many dogs can have allergies to wheat). If I had seen this in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it.

I would not recommend this book.

a little contrived

Brinton's Anatomy of a Revolution is based on a brilliant premise - that all revolutions go through specific "stages." Using the English, French, and Russian revolutions and the American War for Independence as his models, he seeks to show common threads between the four of them.
However, there are some flaws in his thesis. As one reader pointed out, Brinton never defines what a "revolution" is - a problem especially given the fact that many do not consider the American Revolution a revolution at all. But beyond this point, there are problems as well. His model does not fit each revolution very well - especially the English Revolution's "Thermidorian Reaction" (which Brinton uses to describe the "calm" after the relative chaos and violence one usually associates with revolution.) His argument on the origins of revolution is similarly does not fit all revolutions well.
However, it is a fascinating read, and Brinton does a remarkable job in briefly and succinctly summarizing each revolution, their causes and the major players and events in them. This, if for no other reason makes it a worthwhile read.

Helping Social Studies teachers since the early 60s

A former teacher, who had used this book in the mid-sixties in her social studies class, introduced me to Crane Brinton's work. The Anatomy of Revolution provides the perfect companion for high school educators who want to step away from the stodgy lecture method of teaching the English, French, American, and Russian revolutions. The book is invaluable for assisting in creating lesson plans that discuss the characteristics and commonalities of revolutions. Once learned, a model can be created that students can use to analyze and evaluate any of the world's major and minor revolutions. Crane Brinton's book is a "must have" for any high school social studies teacher interested in creating similar lessons on the topic of revolution that foster higher levels of learning.

THE GRANDDADDY OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF REVOLUTIONS

I have always been an avid student of the great modern revolutions both as a matter of practical politics and in order to glean some insights into how they have affected human history. In short, how the ideas and practice of those revolutions have acted as nodal points on the further progress of humankind. Crane Brinton's little book was probably the first book I read that tried to put that idea into some kind of order. While some of the material in the book is dated and some has been superseded by events and further research every serious student of comparative revolutions depends in some way or another on his pioneering methodology.

Brinton took the four great revolutions of his time (the Chinese Revolution had not occurred when he originally wrote the book)-the English of the 17th century, the French and American of the 18th century and the Russian of the 20th century and drew some common conclusions from them. Here the American Revolution acted as a kind of control for viewing the others. While no one would deny that each great revolution had its own perculiarities some lessons, so to speak, can be drawn from the various experiences.

Brinton traced the role of ideas, all kinds of ideas, some fanciful some serious that accompanied the dawn of every pre-revolutionary period as those who want to make a revolution or at least change things got a hearing from layers of society that they would not have gotten in more stable times. He also noted that the old regimes had run out of steam both in ideas and personnel, as exemplified by those who ruled at the time of revolutionary upheaval.

While the spark that ignited each revolution had different causes the revolutionary process itself started out as a broad coalition of forces opposed, for various reasons, to the old regime. Then a process of differentiation occured where various more moderate or modest revolutionary types fell by the wayside or were pushed aside under pressure from the more plebian masses and those committed to see the revolution through to the end, the Cromwells, the Robsepierres and the Lenins. During the course of these changes the counter-revolution, usually aided by foreign powers, reared its head.

I want to give particular attention to the question of Thermidor- that is the point where the revolution itself loses steam. The term stems from that point in the French Revolution in 1794 where the extreme left under Robespierre was defeated by more moderate forces within his own party (the Jacobins) and while not returning back to the old regime most definitely marked the end of progressive social experimentation. This has always been a thorny question on the political left. The Bolsheviks, particularly Trotsky, in the period of decline of the Russian Revolution poured out reams of polemics on its meaning (and even its applicability to their revolution). There are various causes for Thermidor; the leadership cadre gets tired, complacent or dies defending the revolution against counter-revolution; the people who previously supported the more extreme measures act likewise; and, those who want to stop the revolution in its tracks find a voice for their frustrations.

That much is clear from Brinton. What may need some revising is the question of whether in light of the destruction of the Soviet Union in 1991-92 and the return to capitalism there and the reverses in the Chinese Revolution which place it on the road back to capitalism that the previous premise about not going back to the old regime still holds true. The only way out of that dilemma is to argue that in neither case has the situation returned to the semi-feudal state before those revolutions. In any case, while you will need to read other books on comparative revolutions this is the place to start.

Fazlur Rahman (1919–1988) was the Harold H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor of Islamic Thought at the University of Chicago. His many books include Islam and Modernity: Transformation of an Intellectual Tradition, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

A great resource for advanced students in early Islamic Thought

True to his record, Fazlur Rahman gives us a book which is thoroughly researched and highly difficult to read. Written in the 60s, this volume takes a deep look into the concept of Prophecy and its psychological basis as expounded upon by Greeks philosophers and then later by Arabs.

Rahman's works is mostly based upon explaining the writings of Ibn Sina and Al Farabi and comparing it to the works of Greek Philosophical thought. To that end Rahman succeeds well and provides us a very detailed account of how the concept of Prophecy (or Wahy, in Islamic thought) was dealt with and explained through the ages leading up to the first millennium.
One serious draw back of this work is the presence of untranslated Greek references, written in Greek script. One fails to understand how the author expects the readers to get an understanding of these references without first being able to read Greek script.

All in all, a great resource for advanced students in early Islamic Thought. Certainly not meant for the layperson.

Gee, haven't even had chance to read it yet...just remember watching Mr. Roberts on TV years ago...liked some of his ideas then. Going through tough time with husband's head injury following hit-n-run motorcycle accident, looking for guidance & miracles. With sincerest apologies, I have given seller 4 stars for kindness & speed of shipping. Lacking 1 star due to condition of book...VERY yellow, 'old age' to the point of crackling pages, some pages wrinkled/sticking like it may have gotten wet/moist somewhere along the way. This was not disclosed. Will browse through, then probably donate to charity. THANKS!

A must for any artist

I've never encountered such a precise simple book on composition. When I was in art school, we experimented with composition with our teacher saying "just draw shapes". It was very frustrating because I didn't know why certain shapes worked and others didn't, and so I never got anywhere. For years I struggled with composition and knew something had to be done about it. After reading this book, I finally understand composition! When you first open it it looks so simple you get worried you already know everything in it, but Molly explains everything so perfectly, showing you both examples of what works and what doesn't, and most importantly, why. There are also exercises at the very end of the book to put your knowledge to the test. This book should be mandatory in any art major!

graphically teaches you what it means to tell a story graphically only using things like size composition and shade. mostly only using the same principles. It's great the way it shows examples or these techniques while using them.

Many other books on at go on and on trying to put thinks into worlds. this book uses pictures and graphics to tell you a story while at eh same time you see the decisions and thought process being made while telling you this story. kinda like watching a movie about making a movie. it's not like you read and then heres examples or read and maybe you can see how this works in practice. it's really effective and all there.

at the point I read this book I've done art for a while and though I knew composition. and I did. thats what this book was recommended to me as. but I find it to more about storytelling and how elements you never thought of like composition can be a great storytelling tool. and how graphically with out the superficial elements like drawing a good drawing of say a wolf in this cause. just using framing and position to communicate the story and feeling you clearly want to create.

I love this book, because it best illustrates a fundamental core skill every artist needs.

I am constantly searching for better ways to understand photographic composition, not only so that I can take better photographs in the field/in camera but so that I can make good editing decisions in the digital darkroom. So when a photographer recommended this book I jumped on the opportunity and I'm very happy that I did. Molly Bang's "Picture This: How Pictures Work" is a fantastic resource for any creative person trying to get a better understanding of visual dynamics.

The frist thing I did when I got the book was to simply look at the pictures -- even without reading the text the graphics tell the story of how to create a more visually dynamic image and story. So if you are interested in understanding how lines create tension, the impact of negative space, tonal relations, and getting a better understanding of color and emotional relationships/reaction I heartily recommend this simple little book. If you want to get a better understanding of what "draws your eye" or to get a handle on "seeing" rather than simply "looking" then check out this book.

Twists and turns

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book. Although I did not feel that justice was well served. If I had written the story, I might've had a different ending. But, as in life, things happen that are out of our control. And when it does, you just have to prepare yourself for the future, just as Kyla does in this series.

All five books were amazing the ending took a different turn than I thought it would.Its a great book and I recommend all 5 books I hope there will be at least 1 more book to this srory.
