About the Author
Starting with Monopoly at age 6, William Jockusch never saw a game he didn t like. Since then, he has become addicted to risk, chess, Dungeons and Dragons, wargames, various computer games, bridge, Magic: The Gathering, and, most recently, poker, while somehow finding time between his games to earn a PhD in math from MIT. These addictions have spawned many friendships and two careers to date. One is his poker career, which in turn spawned this book.

In addition to his passion for poker, William s interest in games also gave him a passion for game design. For seven years, William worked for Wizards of the Coast, where he helped create and improve new cards for Magic: The Gathering, a card game created by fellow mathematician Richard Garfield.

Applying his game design skills to poker, William created Underpoker, a variant deck which can be used for common forms of poker such as Omaha and hold em.

William has two children with his wonderful wife, Maria. He lives in the Seattle area.

Completely Unnecessary.

I'm generally a PLO player and have appreciated the recent increase in its popularity. I'm also a huge fan of 2+2. However, I'm incredibly disappointed with this new offering. To cut a long story short, if you're going to continue being a game-destroying short stacker, stick to Rolf Slotboom's books. For everyone else, Jeff Hwang's two books are far, far superior to any others on the market.

A number of things really bothered me about Jockusch's book. First, he (correctly) points out that short stackers can have a devastating effect on the game, and even throws in two suggestions at the end of the book (one of which is ridiculous) on how to effectively kill off short stacking. He then proceeds to describe how to play a short stack throughout most of the book, and numerous times he mentions that he's primarily a short stacker. What?!

Secondly, in a game as action driven as PLO, Jockusch has written a book advocating and explaining what could best be described as the nittiest possible way you could imagine to play PLO. This book may help you become profitable at PLO if you aren't already, but it will also make you want to gouge your eyes out.

Third, the layout in the book makes no sense. There are very few hand examples compared to not only Jeff Hwang's books, but 2+2 books in general; not only that, but the vast majority are held to the end of the book and lumped into one chapter, making one have to constantly go back and forth between chapters while reading if one wants to get anything out of the topic at hand.

I could go on, but I think by now you should be heading in the opposite direction from this book. Buy it for the people you regularly play PLO with - *that* will make you more profitable. ;p

Excellent.

Overall, this is a very good book.

It covers a lot of the critical pieces necessary for winning PLO play, including concepts on what types of hands you are looking for, preflop play, play from the blinds, how to adjust to preflop actions by others, wraps, playing AAxx, defending vs AAxx, flopping made hands, flopping big draws, flopping marginal draws and flopping marginal hands, hand reading, bluffing and more. It has more than 60 pages of sample hands to bring home

The two main criticisms I've seen are 1) it focuses on short-stacking which is true, and probably too much so. But while the purists don't like it (for valid reasons), it can be a profitable strategy and should be covered, imho, 2) the hand examples are clumped at the end of the book, which is probably not ideal, but seems a bit of a minor criticism. After all, if you're flipping from a section to the hand examples at the end of the section, your fingers are holding 5 pages vs 60 pages, but whatever, and to a lesser extent, 3) the author recommends playing a nittier style where he plays more passively. I'm not sure what I think of this, as you have to play the style that makes you money. Part of this is related to playing a laying a short-stack, where correct play has you playing fewer hands.

The only other real competition for "Best Single PLO Book To Buy" is Jeff Hwang's Pot-Limit Omaha Poker, so a few thoughts comparing them.

Advantages of this book:
- Covers a lot more PLO material at roughly 300 pages vs Hwang's 160 pages
- Has roughly 90 pages on post-flop play vs Hwang's 20 pages. Since post-flop play is where more of the money is made, this is a pretty important difference.
- Has more depth and breadth on basics. Has more material on for example what to do based on opponents actions, and also on blind play, and deeper discussion of specifics.
- Good material for a wide variety of styles, but focuses a bit more on short-stack play

Advantages of Hwang's
- Focused more on deeper-stacked play
- Covers a bit more upfront on conceptual materials, and what you are looking for when playing PLO.
- Includes more examples of which specific hands to play preflop, ie. translating the concepts to specifics.
- Has a strong section on straight draws: the structure of them, number of outs and so on.
- Covers other games besides PLO: specifically Limit Omaha 8 or better, and Pot Limit Omaha 8 or better.
- Overall, this is a very good book also.

Overall, this book is a bit of a better choice for a single book to get, but really, if you are going to play PLO for money, it's well worth your time to get both as they emphasize slightly different things.

it's ok if you're new to this game

bottom line is, this book's 'ok' if you're a new player to this game.

i've been playing PLO for over a year now and am a consistent winner at it. i've read all of hwangs books and it's given me a huge edge over most of the live players, not all, but most.

get this book if you're new to PLO. i don't think it'll make you a consistent winner at the game, but it'll help build some basics.

it is well written in terms of making it easy for the readers to read and understand whats going on in a hand.

If cowardice and betrayal are not, in fact, the motivating factors for the majority of those who illegally depart from the US military, the question must be asked: Why do they desert? Are the issues that caused soldiers to flee to Canada in 2006 the same as those that caused Union soldiers to leave campaigns in Richmond, Virginia and return to their homes in the north? If not, how have the motivations evolved? What, exactly, causes a soldier, sometimes with a history of battle campaigns, to say �‘enough'? Most of the causes of desertion are inherent in the military system itself, and this is carefully detailed within this book. Through the use of the government's own studies and statistics throughout history, along with information from other sources, the problems of the military system that cause desertion are detailed. Along with the reasons for desertion, the government's changing response to it is discussed. Various forms of what can only be classified as torture have often been implemented, with either tacit or open approval by the US government. The author suggests that the government's response to desertion is simply a political tool to not only keep soldiers in the ranks, thus helping to further the country's goals (whether honorable or not), but also to keep the average citizen behind those goals. While the tactics of so doing have advanced through the last two centuries, the purposes have changed little.

About the Author
Robert Fantina is a long-time activist for peace and social justice. He has worked with the Coalition for Peace Action in New Jersey. Originally involved in the Dennis Kucinich presidential campaign in 2004, he eventually worked as a district organizer through MoveOn.org on the Kerry campaign in Florida. Following the 2004 presidential election, he moved to Canada, where he now resides.

Fantina says, "My interest in military desertion dates to the Vietnam era and my protests against that war. More recently I have been in contact with deserters and have researched their stories. In reviewing interviews with these men and researching the government's case against each of them, my beliefs about desertion have crystallized. This led me to explore the reasons for desertion throughout America's history. My belief that the motivations for desertion are many and complex, and are either rooted in or encouraged by military policy, has been supported by my research."

much needed perspective

This book provides much needed discussion on what has always been a heated political/emotional issue - desertion from the military. While desertion has commonly been attributed to cowardice and lack of moral character, Robert Fantina thoughtfully discusses the larger issues, physical and emotional, that would compel a soldier to go AWOL. Some causes that stand out include: substandard supplies and lodging, inferior leadership, and personal disagreement with how the war is being conducted. Causes that are less obvious to the public,but no less deadly, include mistreatment of the soldier by the military itself.

Fantina documents the causes of desertion in each of the major conflicts through US history. Included are extracts from letters of soldiers who chose to desert, and details of the subsequent treatment of these men and women. These stories are not included in our general history texts; and as such, an important face of war, namely the cost to our soldiers, is never fully discussed.

This book brings a needed human face to a popular, but politically driven caricature Understanding the causes of desertion, is not an easy thing to come to grips with. But if we are to better understand the situation of all our soldiers past and present, we must look beyond the propaganda and see the nitty gritty details of their lives.

I know this book was coming and looked forward to it with great anticipation. Fortunaley I was not disappointed.

I knew little of nor had considered desertion from any military. Fantina offers some well thought out insights into what, beyond the reasons the powers that be give, my motivate someone to leave military service. Fantina does it by chronicling all the major wars of the US military.

The book is quick and to the point. The writing on what could be a very dry topic is not dry but quite an accessable read.

If he wrote the book to get the reader to think about the military and its role in a democratic society Fantina succeeded.

About the Author
John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Cape Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for more than twenty-five years. The author of a popular series of college textbooks on both writing and reading, John enjoys the challenge of developing materials that teach skills in an especially clear and lively way. Before teaching, he earned advanced degrees in writing at Rutgers University and in reading at Rowan University. About the Author

Richard Elliott Friedman is professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature and holds the Katzin Chair at the University of California, San Diego. One of the premier biblical scholars in the country, he received his doctorate at Harvard and was a visiting fellow at Oxford and Cambridge. Author of The Hidden Face of God, The Hidden Book in the Bible, Commentary on the Torah, The Exile and Biblical Narrative, and the bestselling Who Wrote the Bible?, Friedman is also the president of the Biblical Colloquium West. A consultant to universities, journals, encyclopedias, and publishers, he is also the editor of four books on biblical studies and has authored over fifty articles, reviews, and notes in scholarly and popular publications.

A sparkling collection of Insights

In days of yore, Bible commentary was not done by the person who did the translation. Thus, both the Hertz and Plaut commentaries used the translation of another. Recently, some scholars have done both, and Commentary on the Torah (Richard Elliot Friedman, HarperCollins, 2000) is a splendid example. It covers the entire Humash (5 Books of Moses).
Those of you familiar with him as the author of Who Wrote the Bible? may be surprised that, with rare exceptions, the question of the origins of the Bible does not arise. He is solely concerned with what the text means. Indeed, he repeatedly views the Humash as a unified whole, tracing the development of themes across books, and emphasizing how language in one book is meant to reflect language used in another. His gaze is so fixed on the text itself that midrashic elaboration (seen frequently in Plaut) and defenses of the text (seen so much in Hertz) are largely absent. He wants the text understood in its own terms, as seen, for example, by his repeated efforts to show how the Bible distinguishes between offenses in the sacred and non-sacred zones.
This is in one sense a personal commentary. While his views are informed by much scholarship, he clearly speaks in his own voice; you seldom see "Tradition says..." or "Rashi explains ... " (and even then, it's done generally to distinguish his views from earlier ones). Indeed, sometimes he uses the first person "I", which is uncommon in serious Torah commentary. This is also reflected in what he chooses to write about. Not as full a commentary as Hertz; sometimes dozens of verses can go by without comment. But when he has points to make, (e.g. in the first three verses of Deuteronomy) then he takes the space needed.
This commentary isn't really designed for beginners; the short introductions and scene-setting remarks that Hertz does so well are largely absent. And it doesn't have the depth that some scholars would want. But in the midrange --- where so many of us are --- this book really sparkles. Again and again there are remarkable insights, often drawn from literary analysis, close attention to detail, points raised of the I-never-noticed-that-before type. There's a fine theory about why Moses was not allowed into the promised land, a startling and comprehensive explanation of Sotah, a good discussion of "impure" and "pure", a convincing critique of some proposed explanations of the dietary laws, a careful explanation of his translation choices for Genesis 1: 1-2, an intriguing explanation as to why the ban on homosexual conduct is written just for males (including a rare bit of editorializing), and many more gems. Further, his writing is marked by a combination of clarity and precision that is a pleasure to read and adds to its engaging character.
The book has a few essays, my favorites being a vigorous defense of the unity of Numbers (as opposed to the standard view of it being a "hodgepodge") and a discussion of the decisions that a translator must make. Alas: no index. For example, there's an informative discussion of the evolution of the control of miracles at Numbers 20:11, but how would you ever find this? The Hebrew text seems easier to read than the Plaut or Hertz.
This book is essential to anyone who seeks new insights into the meaning of the 5 Books of Moses.

insightful but not as comprehensive as some

I agree with both the positive and negative reviewers of this book.

On the positive side: Friedman is often more original, more insightful, and more interesting than the "Chumashes by committee" that most congregations use (by which I mean the Orthodox Artscroll, the Conservative Etz Chaim, as well as Plaut's Reform Chumash). On the average, IFriedman made one or two points per Torah portion that made me say "Wow!" to myself.

On the negative side: this book is simply not comprehensive enough to substitute for the committee Chumashes. The committee Chumashes tend to be almost line-by-line (at least compared to Friedman's book). Friedman's depth is gained at the sacrifice of breadth: he covers only the topics that really interest him.

And of course, he doesn't cover Haftorot at all.

This book is a fine supplement to the committee Chumashes (or to Hertz, who is also more comprehensive than Friedman) - but not a substitute.

When You Wonder What The Bible Really Says, Start Here

Having been brought up on a number of Christian translations of the Bible, and being frequently frustrated by the inherent biases, the composite nature, and the weight of the King James Bible that hangs over every subsequent English version, I turned to Richard Elliot Friedman to get a better idea of what the Hebrew text says. I had been particularly struck by the straightforwardness of his "Hidden Book in the Bible", and the virtues of this approach are apparent in this Torah.
The commentary is interesting and insightful, although it frequently only whets my appetite for more. And the mere presence of the Hebrew text has caused me to start learning Hebrew to experience the sound relations among the words. It has rapidly become clear, even in my limited state of comprehension, that the text is composed like music, and much more is going on there than merely telling stories and listing regulations.
I'm sure there can be no definitive translation or commentary on this, the most heavily worked over text in history, but this is a fine place to start.

About the Author
ALAN S. KAUFMAN, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Psychology at Yale University School of Medicine and resides in San Diego, California. He is the author or coauthor of numerous, widely used psychological assessment instruments and books, and is a series editor (with Nadeen Kaufman) of the Essentials of Psychological Assessment series (Wiley). He and Elizabeth Lichtenberger have collaborated on a number of books, including Essentials of WAIS�-III Assessments. His most recent tests include the second editions of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (KABC-II), Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement (KTEA-II), and Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT-2).
