Author's Note About Previous Version�This following is a note about story changes and updates for those readers who read the original version of this story in the�12 Shades of Midnight�anthology.Switching Hour�was originally part of the�12 Shades of Midnight�anthology which was available for a limited time in 2015. The�original story I wrote has since been adapted as necessary for inclusion in the�Magic and Mahem�series. This copy--the one containing this note--is a highly revised�and extended version. You as a reader will notice many changes from the original, which was intentionally crafted to fit anthology guidelines.The most noticeable of changes is in characters. In the anthology version, Chapter 1�was originally co-written with my good buddy, Dakota Cassidy, as part of a fun and�fabu experiment.�In the anthology,�Switching Hour (by me)�and�Witched at Birth (by Dakota)�include the same, or nearly the same, beginning. At the end of that original Chapter One our characters went separate ways--an intentional creative decision we made together--and our stories went their separate ways too.�After the anthology was removed from publication, Dakota and I both released our stories on their own. We each made as many changes as we felt necessary to make them work in their new individual series. The biggest change I made was in�creating a brand new best friend character for my heroine, Zelda.�The new character has a different name (Sassy), a different storyline, and will return in later series books because that is what best friends do.�If you are a Dakota fan, as well as one of mine, you may notice our Chapter One remains similar even in our newly released versions. Unique and funny

Zelda has just served a nine month sentence in the witch’es prison for killing her cat who just happened to be her familiar; it was an accident. A strong healer, what had her sentenced for so long was that she’d been using her magic for selfish reasons, conjuring up designer clothes as well as expensive cars and vacations. On her release she’s given back a portion of her magic and is on probation for a month and needs to complete a task during that time. Her aunt had left her a house and she’ll know what to do when she gets there. She had an aunt? If after a month’s time she doesn’t complete her task, all magic will be removed and she’ll become mortal. Only she’s not quite sure what that task is.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed about this author’s writings is the crazy main character she often comes up with. This one is selfish with not quite the intense potty mouth of another popular lead character. With Zelda, it’s the names she comes up with for others that stands out.

The situations are definitely unique and funny, but I found it difficult to like Zelda for a good chunk of the book. Due to her upbringing, she’s never been emotionally close with another and to protect her heart, just doesn’t want to establish connections with the people who like and appreciate her. Hang in there; it takes a while but things do change. And thankfully, the secondary characters are likable and interesting enough to carry the story until that time.

A Fun Read!

"Switching Hour" a "Magic and Mayhem Book 1" is another fantastic addition to the collection of paranormal romance novels by Robyn Peterman. Zelda starts out materialistic and self absorbed. She just finished spending nine months in a prison for witches due to her obsession with high end fashion and running over her familiar. Now on probation, she has a month to complete a task or face being turned into a mortal. Can Zelda find her place in the world, or will she return to her nomadic ways? Overall, this is another fun novel featuring a slightly unbalanced but loveable female protagonist. The secondary characters are wacky as well, but in a good way. If you like Robyn Peterman's other novels, you'll enjoy this one as well.

Simply amazing!!

Since I discovered Fashionably Dead, I have come to love all the books from R. Peterman. She is just an awesome writer, with great books that should be mandatory to read. No joke. In this new series we meet Zelda who I came to wish was part of my family or bff, I will not spoil the story, there are more 5 stars reviews if you don't believe me. Now the hard part is to wait very patiently for the next book. There are different series, and yes I buy them all. And let me tell you, my money is well spent. I now am the proud owner of all these amazing books from Robyn, which I re-read because they are funny, lift my spirit, are just wonderful, they transport me to another place where I dream I am the main character, and so much more. Thank you Robyn for all of these stories, you have no idea how much they mean to me and many other readers I bet.

She concludes that, like Marx, Rousseau believed that alienation can only be transcended through the merging of the individual and the community.

Campbell's reading of Rousseau's key texts makes the case that he is the foundational source of the theory of alienation as it is found in subsequent literature, especially in Hegel and then Marx and Marxian-inspired discourse. Campbell's explication shows that Rousseau's psychosocial understanding of man's dilemma in modern civil life transcends the Marxian focus on economic man. The author says Rousseau's theory has been overlooked and the significance of his innovative insight neither fully understood nor appreciated. Campbell (Concord Univ.) also sees a clash between Rousseau and Marx: for the former, man's original nature is asocial at core and for the latter, it is social. For Rousseau, society itself is the conundrum man faces. Campbell says that Marx's remedy of revolution fails to overcome alienation because it does not resolve the self-alienation that Rousseau locates within man's inner being. Only The Social Contract's paradox of alienation overcoming itself (a pre- Hegelian negation of the negation?) can produce synthesis between individual and communal well-being...Summing Up: Recommended.

Sally Howard Campbell is associate professor of political science at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, where she has taught since 2003. She teaches courses in political theory, international relations and constitutional law. She received her Master’s degree from Rice University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Houston. She has co-authored articles for The Journal of Conflict Resolution and The American Journal of Political Science and was a contributor to The Constitutionalism of the American States (2008).

A Q&A with Author Veronica Roth

Q: What advice would you offer to young aspiring writers, who long to live a success story like your own?

Roth: One piece of advice I have is: Want something else more than success. Success is a lovely thing, but your desire to say something, your worth, and your identity shouldn’t rely on it, because it’s not guaranteed and it’s not permanent and it’s not sufficient. So work hard, fall in love with the writing—the characters, the story, the words, the themes—and make sure that you are who you are regardless of your life circumstances. That way, when the good things come, they don’t warp you, and when the bad things hit you, you don’t fall apart.

Q: You’re a young author--is it your current adult perspective or not-so-recent teenage perspective that brought about the factions in the development of this story? Do you think that teens or adults are more likely to fit into categories in our current society?

Roth: Other aspects of my identity have more to do with the factions than my age. The faction system reflects my beliefs about human nature—that we can make even something as well-intentioned as virtue into an idol, or an evil thing. And that virtue as an end unto itself is worthless to us. I did spend a large portion of my adolescence trying to be as “good” as possible so that I could prove my worth to the people around me, to myself, to God, to everyone. It’s only now that I’m a little older that I realize I am unable to be truly “good” and that it’s my reasons for striving after virtue that need adjustment more than my behavior. In a sense, Divergent is me writing through that realization—everyone in Beatrice’s society believes that virtue is the end, the answer. I think that’s a little twisted.

I think we all secretly love and hate categories—love to get a firm hold on our identities, but hate to be confined—and I never loved and hated them more than when I was a teenager. That said: Though we hear a lot about high school cliques, I believe that adults categorize each other just as often, just in subtler ways. It is a dangerous tendency of ours. And it begins in adolescence.

Q: If you could add one more faction to the world within Divergent, what would it be?

Roth: I tried to construct the factions so that they spanned a wide range of virtues. Abnegation, for example, includes five of the traditional “seven heavenly virtues:” chastity, temperance, charity, patience, and humility. That said, it would be interesting to have a faction centered on industriousness, in which diligence and hard work are valued most, and laziness is not allowed. They would be in constant motion, and would probably be happy to take over for the factionless. And hard-working people can certainly take their work too far, as all the factions do with their respective virtues. I’m not sure what they would wear, though. Overalls, probably.

Q: What do you think are the advantages, if any, to the society you’ve created in Divergent?

Roth: All the advantages I see only seem like advantages to me because I live in our current society. For example, the members of their society don’t focus on certain things: race, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, etc. I mean, a world in which you look different from the majority and no one minds? That sounds good to me. But when I think about it more, I realize that they’re doing the exact same thing we do, but with different criteria by which to distinguish ourselves from others. Instead of your skin color, it’s the color of your shirt that people assess, or the results of your aptitude test. Same problem, different system.

Q: What book are you currently reading and how has it changed you, if at all?

Roth: I recently finished Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma, which I would call “contemporary with a paranormal twist,” or something to that effect. It’s about a girl whose sister has a powerful kind of magnetism within the confines of a particular town, and how their love for each other breaks some things apart and puts other things back together. It was refreshing to read a young adult book that is about sisterhood instead of romance. It’s one of those books that makes you love a character and then hate a character and then love them again—that shows you that people aren’t all good or all bad, but somewhere in between. Imaginary Girls gave me a lot to think about, and the writing was lovely, which I always love to see.

Gr 9 Up-In the dystopian Chicago setting of Roth's novel (Katherine Tegen Bks., 2011), the population is divided into five factions. Upon declaring allegiance to one of them, 16-year-old Beatrice will decide her future. Beatrice and her brother, Caleb, grew up in helpful, unassuming Abnegation, always putting others first. During her aptitude testing, a simulation probes her suitability for Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Rather than getting a clear reading of her strengths, Beatrice's result is disturbing and dangerous: she is Divergent. At the choosing ceremony, the teenager impulsively joins Dauntless, the tattooed "hellions" whose value is bravery, and who protect the community. Beatrice, now called Tris, finds she feels brilliantly alive in Dauntless, even during the brutal training. She enjoys seeing her muscles harden, testing her courage, protecting the underdog, and working her way up the ranks of recruits. Making both friends and enemies, she moves through simulations tailored to trigger her Fear Landscape. Gradually, her Divergence shows itself, allowing Tris to see that the faction-dominated world isn't as wonderful as she has been told. The likeable characters, excellent pacing, and blooming romance will have listeners hooked. Emma Galvin's youthful voice has a twinge of huskiness that lends itself to voicing both young men and women. The audiobook will be very popular, so library patrons will have to be careful considering the packaging: a lightweight box and foldout sleeves. Well written, great secrets, solid second novel

I have been eagerly awaiting Insurgent by Veronica Roth along with many other people after the startling and thrilling first book, Divergent. That book introduced us to five factions of a dystopian society, and one brave girl named Tris, who decides to join the Dauntless. It's clear by the end of the book that she belongs to the group of Divergent, meaning that she could have belonged to any one of these factions with her personality traits.

This book takes off immediately where the last one ended. At first it's a jumble of confusion, and I may have made more sense if I had reread the first one right before this one. The factionless have more of a story, and we get more fleshed out characters. I have to admit I was a little disheartened by the first half of the book. To me, it seemed like we were drifting around in Tris's bizzare guilt trip. I understood she was working through her issues but I was almost overwhelmed by the amount of pages dedicated to this. Overall, the story has a darker tone and almost gets too heavy.

However, things change when secrets start to be revealed. My absolute favorite part of the book was when we are introduced to some Erudite characters who end up being more three dimensional than Tris ever imagined. The last secret revealed made the whole book worth reading.

While I had some reservations, I thought overall this book was well written and ramped up heavily at the end. The last 25% of the book was really terrific. Just personally, I think that I liked the first book better because we are first introduced into this world that is so completely different than has been created before. However, the second book is a solid companion to the first, and I am excited to see how the story ends.

I was so hopeful for this book. Divergent was pretty good, and I liked the way it left off. But this sequel is quite the let down.
I want to start with the plot because that was my biggest issue. It felt like the characters were essentially running in circles until the climax. They went on all the little journeys that didn't really develop the characters or even the plot. It was just time killing. A note that I attempted to read the third installment, and failed. My reasoning is I feel like the author had a great idea with the first book, but jumped into publishing before she had really developed the story, and then had pressure from the the publisher to pump out the next one. It's a common mistake, but it frustrates me. That is why I believe the plot is so lacking and why there is such a dive from the first book to the second.
Characters is another thing I need to vent about. Authors sometimes make the mistake of losing sight of an actual character, and just begin to use them as tools to make the plot(whatever little there is) work. That happens frequently in this book. Characters do complete 180s in personality, with the slightest of reasons, and we're just supposed to accept it. Everything you knew about characters from the last book is void here. And sometimes that can make it more interesting. Other times you see that it's really just a distraction from the author not knowing what to do next.
Now after saying that, it's not a completely horrible book. Though, I warn you, the third one IS a completely horrible book. So is it really worth your time? I don't think so, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

This is an extremely poor example to set for youth

Roth should not be writing youth fiction. This book is chock-full of dysfunctional behavior. For example, Four repeatedly grabs Tris after she tells him to let her go, and she acquiesces. He verbally abuses her and then justifies it. He tells her to look weak to fit in and protect herself. This is an extremely poor example to set for youth. Skip the book and watch the movie instead: the characters are more well-developed, and their strength and courage shines through.

Nice book, but already outdated

Nice book, but already outdated: It’s for version 3 of D3.js. Version 4 was released in June 2016. Lots of things have changed. Most of the examples don’t work with version 4.

Excellent tutorial with clear, logical explanations

I am currently working through the tutorial and the explanations show a much better understanding of CSS, JS, and D3 than I've found in other tutorials, and the explanations are much more clear from a conceptual standpoint. The quick links to the code from the Kindle book make playing with the examples much easier. I have been jumping between multiple books, and this is by far more logical and clear than any others I've tried. **I urge Amazon to make the Kindle book searchable**

A very well-written book for learning D3.js. It starts with the basics of the library explaining them in a clear way with nice examples. It is interesting that you can find descriptions of many different graphs (not only the common ones, like bar, pie and line).
The best part for me was the Webmapping section ('Creating Maps with GeoJSON and TopoJSON'). I was looking for a nice tutorial about this subject.
Overall, it is one of the best books about D3.js available.
