The tyrant Cleon is taken down by a lowly sausage-seller
By Lawrance Bernabo
"The Knights" is one of the comic masterpieces of Aristophanes, constituting a direct personal attack on Cleon. The level of invective and satire is pretty astounding, especially since this was only the fourth comedy written by Aristophanes. In his previous comedy, "The Archanians," a character had threatened to cut up Cleon into shoe-leather for the Knights, and in this play the comic playwright makes good on his promise. From satirizing the policies of Cleon's political party and capturing the miseries of war, Aristophanes turns to a personal attack on Cleon as a demagogue.
The comedy begins with two characters, Demosthenes and Nicias, who are caricatures of the historic orators who Aristophanes saw as following public opinion instead of truly leading the people like Pericles. The pair are slaves in the house of Demos, that is to say the citizens of Athens, and are complaining about the new slave, the Paplagonian ("the Tanner"), who represents Cleon and who controls "Demos" by even worst means than they ever did. So they decide to steal the oracles used to persuade Demos and learn that their enemy will be brought down by a sausage-seller. The next thing we know, a sausage-seller stumbles upon stage and the pair convince him to acting, promising him wealth, power, and the support of a thousand knights (who comprise the play's chorus).
At this point the Paphlagonian shows up and the rest of the play consists of mainly a series of agons between him and the sausage-seller in which the two try to out wit, out lie, and outlast each other to win the favor of Demos. The sausage-seller wins over the Demos and Cleon is condemned to sell sausages made with the meat of asses and dogs, always be drunk, to exchange foul language with prostitutes, and to drink nothing but dirty bath water. In the parabasis the chorus ignore Cleon and talk instated about what would happen to the poor tragic poet who wrote this comedy if Athens treats them the way they have other geniuses as they crow old. The big finale has the chorus singing the praises of the knights, their forefathers, the god Poseidon, and of horses (which are sacred to Poseidon).
Compared to "The Acharnians," it is clear "The Knights" is a much more bitter play, portraying the Paplagonian as an unprincipled, lying, cheating scoundrel. The legend is that no other comic dared to lampoon Cleon on stage and that Aristophanes played the role himself and instead of wearing a mask that would clearly represent the features of Cleon smeared his face with wine to represent the purple and bloated visage of the demagogue. The title, as is often the case with the work of Aristophanes, represents the chorus in the play. The Knights were one of the highest orders of citizens in Athens and embodied many of the aristocratic preferences and prejudices that Aristophanes saw as being outdated.
"The Knights" was the fourth play produced by Aristophanes, presented at the Lenan Festival in 424 B.C. We do not know much of his first two efforts, "The Revellers" and "The Babylonians," both of which are long lost, but the third comedy, "The Acharnians" was the first of his three great comedies dealing with the subject of the Peloponnesian War, along with "The Peace" and "Lysistrata." "The Knights" was awarded the first prize at the festival, but Cleon remained in power and therefore a subject for further barbs from Aristophanes.

Ourselves Unborn: A History of the Fetus in Modern America, by Sara Dubow

During the past several decades, the fetus has been diversely represented in political debates, medical textbooks and journals, personal memoirs and autobiographies, museum exhibits and mass media, and civil and criminal law. Ourselves Unborn argues that the meanings people attribute to the fetus are not based simply on biological fact or theological truth, but are in fact strongly influenced by competing definitions of personhood and identity, beliefs about knowledge and authority, and assumptions about gender roles and sexuality. In addition, these meanings can be shaped by dramatic historical change: over the course of the twentieth century, medical and technological changes made fetal development more comprehensible, while political and social changes made the fetus a subject of public controversy. Moreover, since the late nineteenth century, questions about how fetal life develops and should be valued have frequently intersected with debates about the authority of science and religion, and the relationship between the individual and society. In examining the contested history of fetal meanings, Sara Dubow brings a fresh perspective to these vital debates.

Review

"Dubow offers up an important contribution to the field, forcing the reader to contend both with why the fetus is such a fascinating topic for investigation and the deeper social tensions expressed in each conversation about the objects." --Journal of the History of Medicine

"The great strength of this book is the author's wide-angle lens on the human fetus across more than a century of American culture and politics. Sara Dubow offers a thoroughly researched, elegantly written, and comprehensive biography of the unborn. Readers interested in the history of medicine, science, and technology, as well as the history of women's health and reproduction, will find much to savor here." --Bulletin of the History of Medicine

"Dubow's history of the fetus as symbol is a major addition to our history of politics, gender, the body, and reproduction in America. To understand American politics and culture since the nineteenth century requires grasping American's long standing interest in the unborn and the many uses of the concept of fetus. Dubow gives the unknowable "unborn" a history, thus revealing that today's fetus is a construction that grew out of specific political circumstances." --Journal of American History

"[I]lluminating, even gripping...Dubow has provided an indispensable contribution to US political thought." --Women's Review of Books

"A nuanced analysis...Dubow's work makes a significant contribution to our understanding of fetal history...This work will quickly become a standard in the field. Dubow places fetal history within a broad historical context that makes the book valuable to scholars interested in twentieth-century gender, race, politics, and medicine." --American Historical Review

"Dubow's book is a reminder of the moral dilemmas, the politicisation and the sometimes shameful decisions that have been taken over the years. This careful book allows the reader to navigate a course through highly-politicised waters."--The Economist

"Provocative" -- Slate

"Splendidly informative." -- Commonweal

Navigates the roiling waters well
By James V. Holton
"Ourselves Unborn" is destined to be an important contribution in the debate about much more than abortion. Though not directly about that subject, it casts a lot of light on it.

Some readers may suspect that Dubow's lack of clear-cut statements about abortion's morality reflect a bias. But that would be a disservice to the fine work this author has done in pulling back the curtain on the role of the fetus in modern America.

Dubow asserts that the fetus has been much more than a "pre-human" (my phrase) waiting to be born, but a reflection of the country's evolving attitudes about "ourselves unborn." Dubow takes us from the late 1800s/early 1900s up to the present day and shows that perceptions about the fetus reflect larger societal concerns about the role of women, individual rights, and the future of the nation. The research in this book shows that the fetus has evolved (so to speak) to become a proxy for larger social concerns--from the Progressive Era through the Cold War to the present day conservative milieu. Her most incisive commentary is on showing on the expansion of "rights" for the unborn has been the single largest factor for the increasingly restrictive climate of abortion. She shows that the arguments for those rights were in large measure appropriated by abortion opponents in the 1970s and beyond. The idea that the fetus has its own stand-alone rights has developed a lot of currency and is like to retain it for years to come, Dubow asserts.

Abortion opponents are not likely to be swayed by this book. Abortion supporters are not going to find much ammunition for their cause either. However, "Ourselves Unborn" will shed light on how Americans' attitudes towards what it means to be unborn have evolved.

Intelligent, scholarly
By doug korty
I agree with James Horton's intelligent review. This is a useful scholarly book though not the most interesting. For anyone with a strong interest in this particular important aspect of the abortion issue, it is very much worth reading. It is well documented with good notes, a good index, and an extensive bibliography. (from Williams College) Sara Dubow graduated from Williams College in 1991, and received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 2003. Before joining the Williams History department faculty in 2007, she taught at the Brearley School, Hunter College High School, and Hunter College. Her research and teaching interests examine the intersections of gender, law, and politics in 20th century U.S. history. Other books on the abortion debate:

This text and tape set fills a great need. With it's fast-paced, no-nonsense approach, the learner is immediately introduced to the modified Cyrillic alphabet of the Mongols..for those learners desiring to acquire the language as it is spoken in Mongolia, and who are willing to get into the thick of things and learn the rules of the language by generalizing from authentic language examples, I know no better course.

Not for the casual traveller
By Carol Dean
If you really want to learn mongolian get yourself a tutor. I am a fluent speaker of Turkish, and not too shabby at Uzbek, and yet was totally unprepared for spoken Mongolian. I got the 'Learn Mongolian' CD by TalkNow!, and even with lots of listening still couldn't really begin to make out the sounds. If you're going to visit the country, any travel agent there can help you find a tutor for something like $3 or $5 an hour. I had someone whip my pronunciation into pretty good shape in the 10 days I was there, now I feel like I can go back to the book and master the grammar.

The dialogues in this book are helpful, and the content is wonderful if you are going to be spending any time in Ulaanbaatar. In fact I used the map in the book to show my cab drivers where I wanted to go. Yes the language is a little formal, but it's always easier to go from formal to casual rather than back again. And the locals will be tickled. The grammar is tough, but you have to decide whether you actually want to learn the language, or if you just want a phrase book. Really, this is not a phrase book kind of language.

Differentiation of Different Formats
By Mike R.
First off, this is a fine book, with thorough explanations of a language very different from English. If you've studied other languages, then you shouldn't have any problems. If this is your first "second language", then it may be very technical for you ("accusative tense", "genitive tense" etc.). Also, it goes at a pretty quick pace. Spend good time learning the alphabet as having a good base of Mongolian (Cyrillic) Script will protect you from feeling overwhelmed as the exercises become more complex. (But this is a tip for anyone learning a new language in script that is totally unrelated to your native tongue.)

Before purchasing this book and CD, I was very confused by the difference in different versions (Paperback vs. Audio Book vs. Audio CD).
I purchased the boxed set and the CD (thinking that the CD was a PC version of the lessons and exercises, but it's just the audio CD of the exercises included in the boxed set. So now I'm stuck with two copies of the same CD's).

ISBN-13: 978-0415167147 = Paperback book of conversation lessons, vocabulary and grammar lessons, explained in English but Mongolian is only in Mongolian (Cyrillic) script (not phonetic English spelling)

ISBN-13: 978-0415289498 = Accompanying Audio CD with recordings of dialogues and other exercises.

ISBN-13: 978-0415431644 = A boxed set of the two above.

There seem to be cassettes available also, but I haven't purchased them so I can't speak to that.

demanding and remarkably informative
By larry bus
This is a highly commendable effort, especially given its status as just about the only readily available Mongolian textbook out there. If you're curious about what's going on in this enormously fascinating yet unfortunately neglected language, it probably wouldn't hurt to know that it's going to take a lot of determination and far more than a mild interest in Mongolian to get much of anything from this extremely demanding and surprisingly thorough text.

While Colloquial Mongolian is based around a ton of pretty practical dialogues, the text may come off as being heavily focused on grammar, especially early on. This is probably a necessary evil as Mongolian grammar isn't the kind of thing that's just going to make sense after glancing at a couple of passages, but still a lot of people are going to be turned off by being expected to puzzle through sections on `iterative verbal nouns' and `imperfective converbs' before you learn how to say `goodbye.' Probably the best bet is to simply ignore the terminology and just concentrate on the examples given. Point is there's no real need to get hung up on some of these explanations and a good move might be to remind yourself that Mongolians don't care when their suffixes are reflexive, in the same way that anyone able to read these reviews probably knows the difference between the words I, me, we and us without necessarily being aware of the `correct' terms for their cases or person. Like most of the offerings from the colloquial series, this book is content with fabricating conversations then tacking on vocabulary lists, leaving the responsibility for reviewing all this information up to the reader, who has to look elsewhere for reinforcement. Since you're gonna need all the help you can get, the grammar sections are good practice even if sometimes the Mongolian may be easier to understand than the English, but hey, that's kinda a good thing.

The dialogues are situational and begin with fun little idioms. They cover basic greetings, shopping, hotels, ordering food and so on, then move quickly into travel itineraries and visits to herdsmen, where we get hefty doses of cultural and historical information. The good news is that translations are provided for just about every sentence in the book so when you find yourself frustrated by the pacing (we're on to modernized excerpts from the Secret History of the Mongols by chapter 10), or just need a break, sitting back with the English versions of the dialogues makes for some very interesting reading.

As other reviewers have noted the description of Mongolian pronunciation here leaves a lot to be desired, but you're not going to have to work through too many conversations before you realize that coughing up a satisfactorily complete rundown of Cyrillic as forced upon just about the least Slavic language imaginable would be tall order, and it's probably best to just work at it the hard way while trying to juggle all the exceptions and fleeting or hidden letters as they come. With such a user-unfriendly alphabet the tapes are absolutely imperative, and they include all the dialogues (about 4 a chapter), but, unaccountably, none of the vocabulary lists. It's a glaring and unfortunate omission because recording the new words would really help with memorization and with familiarizing yourself with the script, plus there's enough extraneous English banter on the tapes that could have been cut out to make more room. Also it should be noted that readers interested in the older vertical script will be disappointed, as the book only provides a standard letter chart and two versions of the same uniquely confusing paragraph, which most likely won't be enough to lead to any kind of literacy.

While not really a criticism, the biggest thing working against this book is that it's probably a little too ambitious. The text is super dense and gives you more than you would need for a visit to Mongolia, and yet isn't quite accessible enough to be 100% satisfactory as a self-study aid. This would, though, be a great textbook for class use if you're lucky enough to be in that position. It's still an impressive work and as packed with information, linguistic and otherwise, as these things get.

Airborne: The Combat Story of Ed Shames of Easy Company (General Military), by Ian Gardner, Ed Shames

Colonel Ed Shames is that rare man who can call himself a true warrior. A member of Easy Company of Band of Brothers fame, Shames saw combat in some of the most ferocious battles of World War II. From jumping behind the lines of Normandy on D-Day with the 101st Airborne Division, to the near victory of Operation Market Garden, to the legendary stand at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, Shames fought his way across Europe and into Germany itself.

In Airborne Shames and writer Ian Gardner (Tonight We Die As Men) tell the gripping true story of what it was like to be at the spear point of World War II in Europe. Neither the book nor TV series of Band of Brothers ever showed the real Ed Shames. Although he started as a private, combat soon forged Shames into a tough and inspired leader who would win a battlefield commission in Normandy. Seeming always to be where the fighting was, his two goals were to prevail in each fight against the Germans, and to keep his men alive. “Shames, you are the meanest, roughest son of a bitch I've ever had to deal with. But you brought us home,” was what he considered to be the highest compliment he received from one of his men.

Even though he was wounded in the Ardennes, Ed Shames never stopped fighting until Germany surrendered and the war was won. He has never stopped being a warrior.

The "Not Seen on TV" Band of Brothers ...
By DACHokie
I read Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" before HBO made Easy Company a household name. While HBO's presentation was simply mesmerizing, subsequent books written by Easy Company members not only fill gaps, but set the record straight on several misrepresentations in Ambrose's book and the mini-series. With AIRBORNE, Ed Shames, the only Easy Company officer still living, shares his Band of Brothers experience and provides a more expansive look at the famed unit's exploits.

Shames was not a primary figure in the mini-series. He is portrayed (maligned) briefly in one rather insignificant scene as a competent/capable officer that screamed at his men. While author Ian Gardner mentions this in the book's beginning, AIRBORNE in not an attempt to change the image presented by the series, but an effort to reveal the full, untold story of Shames' service. I found AIRBORNE filling a lot of gaps and highlighting the contributions of many Easy Company men who weren't made celebrities by HBO, but were just as important as those who were.

Yes, AIRBORNE's underlying story of a man volunteering for the Airborne and suffering through training at Toccoa before facing combat in Normandy, Holland and Bastogne has been told repeatedly over the years, but the difference is in the details. This book places readers in familiar territory, but allows us to see things with new eyes. Gardner (who has authored other books on the Airborne in World War II) exquisitely narrates Shames' story with considerable detail that showcases his meticulous research effort. Ed Shames corroborates the narrative in his own words for added color and clarity. Gardner paves the way for Shames to expand on events. The narrative is thoroughly detailed. One incident involved P-47 fighters provided support and one of the planes clipped the ground, killing the pilot. While this brief incident was encapsulated in a single paragraph, Gardner memorializes the incident by naming the pilot. This is just one example of many throughout the book where the author exhibits a desire to fully detail events, not merely narrate a story ... a more thorough history is provided.

While I initially thought the book was going to echo the stories presented on HBO, it does not. Shames experienced the same drudgery of running Currahee, just not under the orders of the infamous Capt. Sobel, but another like-minded officer (it seems Sobel was just one of several marionettes that led these men in beginning). The portrayal of fighting in Normandy, Holland and Bastogne is elaborate and introduces new storylines, perspectives and individuals that other Easy Company books don't cover ... particularly, the attack on Foy (which does involve a confused Norman Dike, but no heroics from Ronald Spiers). One instance involved Shames strong-arming a German general (with a .45 to the head) into surrendering to a lowly 2nd Lt. rather than the preferred rank of a major or higher. That general was later found to be Field Marshall Albert Kesselring. The book also expands on the unit's discovery of the forced-labor camps and includes Shames experience visiting Dachau. Throughout the book, it is evident that Shames was a no-nonsense individual that preferred taking a direct approach with individuals and situations; he also holds no punches when expressing his opinions of the men he adored (those he led) or the men he despised (many higher-ranking officers). We get a clearer picture of Capt. Nixon and the problems his drinking caused. It isn't hard to imagine the Shames' open dislike for Nixon (who happened to be close with Maj. Winters) may have been a factor in the series' negative portrayal of Shames. This book fills a lot of Easy Company gaps as we get to see what the "other Brothers" in the unit experienced. In the end, I found myself wondering how these stories didn't make it into the mini-series as they are certainly compelling.

AIRBORNE will surely satisfy those with an appetite for anything related to the Band of Brothers, but also presents enough new material to interest those who believe the subject matter has been exhausted. While it is difficult to separate the televised presentation of Easy Company, AIRBORNE reveals that the unit was large enough to experience significantly different events while fighting on the same turf. I did not find the book to be a rehash, but a new take on a familiar subject and believe this book is integral in bringing the Band of Brothers story full circle. Sadly, this is probably one, if not THE, last voice of Easy Company we are likely to hear from and for that reason alone, I find it worth reading.

This is a no-holds barred book that puts you in the middle of the great battles of western Europe from 1944-1945
By A. Muller
I just finished reading "Airborne," and found it to be an extremely valuable look at parachute warfare in World War II. It really shines when read in conjunction with Ian Gardner's trilogy on the 506th Parachute Regiment of the 101's Airborne in Europe during the war. As told through the eyes of Col. Ed Shames, who at 93 is still on active duty! This is a no-holds barred book that puts you in the middle of the great battles of western Europe from 1944-1945. The Col. is a truly amazing leader. This is also a very unique look at Easy Company and its men. If you are interested in the day to day grind of U.S. Paratroopers in the war, this book is for you.

A missing piece of the story
By Jason Fontella
I am a huge fan of Ian Gardner's work. Having read his trilogy on 3/506 I was excited to hear that he was continuing with another tale, and more so when I discovered the subject was going to be "The man who watched too many war movies" from Band of Brothers fame. Ed Shames' story is one that deserves to be told, and Ian has done justice to the tale.

Gardner allows Ed to tell his own story, while providing the background himself. The tale is compelling, poignant, and ultimately has a happy ending for our hero.

I recommend this book highly.
