800 Pages of Ideas, Tips, Scripts

This is a very large book, covering a lot of ground. In the Acknowledgments section, the author points out that this is NOT the work of just one person--a lot of folks were involved in creating and proofing this reference book. If you have ever written a large technical book, you will realize the challenge in creating such a work--it is very tough.

When reading a book like this, I try to be open to new ways to do things, rather than saying, "That's not how I would do it." If you ask 10 DBAs how to do something, they will each have a different slant on things. Of course, there are going to be areas where the reader might very well have a better way of doing something than the author suggests. On the other hand, I am sure I will find scripts and ideas that the author does better than I do. When I find them, I will incorporate them into my own "tool kit." Some notes:

* In most chapters, there are various little tip sidebars that offer some quick tips or rules of thumb. For example on page 297, Don has a side bar explaining "Mutex latches."
* I especially liked Don's section on the philosophy of rebuilding indexes. Like the author, I like the "pragmatic approach."
* The author points out the absurdity of Oracle claiming that 11g had completed automated performance tuning. Did anyone actually believe that?

Minior nit-pick: Some of the illustrations seem a little on the fuzzy side. Still readable, but not clear. For example, Figures 4.4, 4.5, 12.5, 12.6

Overall, I found this book to be well-organized, and clearly written. There are small sections devoted to changes in 12c, but it appears that most of the scripts will run, with perhaps slight changes, from Oracle 10g to 12. I found that using the Table of Contents, rather than the index, is the best way to home-in on an area of interest.

A poet everyone should know if you love children

I teach Children's Literature and this particular book is always popular. One, this poet is from El Salvador and I don't many poets from that country for children. This bilingual book is lovely The words swim among the fitting illustrations. Multicultural literature, poetry, immigration, growing up are some of its themes- as is the magic of memory and language. This book might inspire you
to write your own poems.

Great book to read to children!

This is a beautiful book that shows Pipil (indigenous people) culture while telling a cute story. I recommend this book for the wonderful story and a great chance to teach children about how it feels to be an immigrant in the US. Although I couldn't read the Spanish translation on each page, the students in my class loved hearing the story. If you know someone from El Salvador, this author's books make a great gift.

I'm a teacher and bought the book to show the different cultures in our classroom. The kids from El Salvador loved and felt proud of sharing their birthplace with the rest of the classmates. The book is wonderful at touching on the topic of immigration. It was a phenomenal way to help my students appreciate other cultures.

Using his signature StreetSmart series design for printed maps (Internet connections are still scant in Cuba), Mr. VanDam points out Havana s restaurants, hotels, resorts and the home-based restaurants known as paladares and offers five self-guided tours that wind through the city s many plazas to contemporary galleries, music venues and gardens, along the Malec�n coastal road and as far as the beaches of Playas de Este. As an amateur mambo dancer and Latin Jazz aficionado, Mr. VanDam has always had a fascination with Cuba and its connection to the Latin jazz scene in New York, he said on the phone from his office there. At the time Van Dam, the founder of VanDam s StreetSmart maps, was catering to a smaller audience: the Americans who could only visit the country if they were Cuban-American or embarking on a people-to-people tour run by a licensed guide, and the 1.1 million Canadians and hundreds of thousands of European travelers who visited last year. In 2015, the country offers jaded American travelers something different from the usual tourist trappings. According to Van Dam, the country is experiencing a brief moment free of advertising before global corporate luxe flattens the island. With highly legible cartography and engaging photographic covers, his StreetSmart Cuba and StreetSmart Havana maps highlight local business colorfully. They're guides to the latest hotels, resorts, restaurants and paladares (private family-run restaurants) that appeal to the pioneering tourist eager to experience the country before the inevitable onslaught of development. VanDam's StreetSmart Van Dam s Cuban maps culled their information from both federal data and his team s personal experience. The relief and terrain data come courtesy of the CIA; the cultural and urban information was provided by Havana s Office of the City Historian; the restaurant and paladares recommendations from his team s ground trothing and testing, as well as recommendations by Cubans and American friends. Havana is currently a dark spot on Google Street Maps, and Google hasn't yet released a statement saying when the company will upgrade its coverage. Even if Street Maps did work there, though, there are no guarantees it would have very many users in the near future. With Internet coverage at a scant 5 percent across the country and download speeds reminiscent of the pre-dial-up era, Cuba doesn t yet have the digital infrastructure to support cell phone cartography. Stephan Van Dam, AIGA is an award-winning cartographer, graphic designer, and information architect. He is the president, principal and creative director of New York-based VanDam Publishing. Twenty-seven of his maps are in the MoMA Collection.

A fantastic guide for your upcoming and long overdue trip to Cuba! That long worm of an island must be a mapmakers nightmare - but Van Dam manages to turn it into a sexy item, folded elegantly, and smoothly sliding into your pocket, as you cruise the highways of Cuba in your vintage American car. Detailed small windows of special attractions such as Varadero or Cayo Coco accompany the map. I find the little red dots ("curiosidad") especially intriguing. There are a lot of them, awaiting the curious. I think I will go, soon! Accompanied, of course, by this lovely and highly useful map. Vamonos!

I've been to Cuba and seeing these new maps is a bit like being there once again - which is now much easier thanks to the State Department's new attitude towards our island neighbor to the south and to this terrific new map. So my advice, buy the map, pack your back and head to Cuba before Mickey Mouse gets there - you'll be glad you did.

About the Author
Lorraine C. Zentz has been a pharmacy technician since 1981. She lives in the small mountain town of Mesa, Colorado, and has worked in all pharmacy arenas (retail, home health, hospital, oncology, and training/education) during her pharmacy career. Lorraine received her Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry, and her Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction (the design and implementation of educational materials). She also completed her doctorate studies in adult education. She has held the position of Colorado State Coordinator for NPTA and Chairman of the Colorado Pharmacist Society Technician Academy and has been certified since 1985. In 2004, she was the recipient of the "Outstanding Leadership Award" and also named "Technician of the Year" for the state of Colorado. Lorraine conducts continuing education programs for technicians throughout Colorado and nationally at the annual NPTA convention.

The Best Croatian Course I Have Found!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Croatia this fall so I bought three different courses to learn the language. This course is BY FAR the best of the three. Of course, there are a few things that you need to remember. Croatian is a difficult language to learn because it is very different from English. Also, there are not a lot of good Croatian courses out there since Croatia is just starting to get tourists to visit.

Each chapter has a dialogue, some key phrases to learn, some grammar information, practice exercises (generally not on the tape, but written) and a comprehension passage. The tapes/CD's are of minimal use because they do not leave a pause for you to repeat. However, I just pause my recorder. It is necessary to use the tapes because it is important to hear the correct pronunciation. Speaking the language out loud (not just hearing it) is of utmost importance. The answers to the exercises are all in the back of the book and there is a comprehesive glossary at the back of the book. I know this doesn't sound like much, but one of the other courses does not provide this luxury!!!

I have a couple of negative things to report about the program as well. As I mentioned, there are not pauses on the recordings. Also, there are not translations of the dialogues. There are definitions of new words and phrases below the dialogues, but previously learned words are not listed. Therefore, if you have forgotten anything it is frustrating. I have written the translations in my book. A needless headache!

Although there are some less-than-perfect aspects to this course, it is definitely the best bet if you want to buy an inexpensive complete course for learning Croatian. Give yourself some time to master each chapter before moving on to the next one and be patient with yourself! Learning a language is rewarding, but never easy!

Short, sweet and thorough!!

My husband and I have studied a lot of foreign languages. We found Teach Yourself Croatian to be one of the best organized texts we have seen. It was excellent for getting the "big-picture" structure as well as the details of grammar and vocabulary. We were at an advantage in that we had studied other Slavic languages before taking on Croatian. The text might be difficult for those without prior knowledge of another Slavic language and a firm grounding in Latin-based grammatical structure. Our main complaint: The CD's did not contain enough exercises nor did they leave space for us to practice. Nevertheless, it served us well in that the Croatians we encountered were impressed with our efforts to learn their language.

Good Overall Beginner's Course in Croatian

I just started learning Croatian recently and began this book with absolutely no background in the language. I'm not even half way through the course right now and yet have been introduced to enough vocabulary, verb conjugation, declension and sentence structure to be able to have some basic conversations in the Croatian language. The added audio is also very helpful for hearing naturally-spoken Croatian by native Croatian speakers. This is not an easy language for a native English speaker to learn by any means, but I feel this course is providing me with a solid foundation for everyday conversational Croatian and I look forward to making my way through future lessons.

This book is great for the person who wants to can five to six batches of jam. The recipes are very easy to follow, and there are lots of different canning recipe on the book unlike some canning books which are a few canning recipes and lots of recipes on how to use you finished product.

Well Done Indeed

I own lots of canning books. In my neighborhood I am known as "The Jelly and Jam" person.

This nice little book has lots of recipes--and not the dull ones you see in every book. Really, how often do you want to make Strawberry Jam? It's good but...it can also be fun and even more tasty.

I've never had one of this woman's recipes fail, and that's a lot better than most recipe collections.

I also like it that the recipes are simple, direct, and to the point. A beginner would have great luck with them.

Two days ago I made "True Blueberry Jam," which is the real, old-fashioned deal. The neighbors all said: this is great--most are way too sweet and I hate that. This is perfect.

She also covers the point that some fruit pits contain cyanide. I've always been wary of that when preserving/cooking. Many old recipes instruct the use of whole fruits or the inclusion of pits as flavoring agents--but those recipes often date back many decades. Her focus is on maximal safety--as it should be.
