The Consolation of Philosophy, by Boethius

In this highly praised new translation of Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy, David R. Slavitt presents a graceful, accessible, and modern version for both longtime admirers of one of the great masterpieces of philosophical literature and those encountering it for the first time. Slavitt preserves the distinction between the alternating verse and prose sections in the Latin original, allowing us to appreciate the Menippian parallels between the discourses of literary and logical inquiry. His prose translations are lively and colloquial, conveying the argumentative, occasionally bantering tone of the original, while his verse translations restore the beauty and power of Boethius’s poetry. The result is a major contribution to the art of translation.

Those less familiar with Consolation may remember it was written under a death sentence. Boethius (c. 480–524), an Imperial official under Theodoric, Ostrogoth ruler of Rome, found himself, in a time of political paranoia, denounced, arrested, and then executed two years later without a trial. Composed while its author was imprisoned, cut off from family and friends, it remains one of Western literature’s most eloquent meditations on the transitory nature of earthly belongings, and the superiority of things of the mind. In an artful combination of verse and prose, Slavitt captures the energy and passion of the original. And in an introduction intended for the general reader, Seth Lerer places Boethius’s life and achievement in context.

From School Library Journal
Slavitt, a poet and translator of over 80 works of fiction, poetry, and drama, presents a new translation of this philosophical classic directed at general readers. Written under the threat of Boethius's impending execution, the work comes on the cusp between the classical and medieval worlds. In alternating prose and verse, Boethius spins a dialog concerning the harsh vicissitudes of fortune and the lasting happiness provided by the life of the mind. Slavitt's prose translation is accessible and makes frequent use of colloquialisms. His poetic translations—too often paraphrased in earlier editions—are not weighed down with attempted fidelities to ancient meter and use contemporary forms to evoke the gravity and grace of the original. While the book does include a brief biographical and textual introduction by Seth Lerer (English & comparative literature, Stanford Univ.), its lack of textual apparatus makes this edition less than ideal for students. It does succeed, however, as a springboard for personal reflection and a source of literate pleasure. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.—Steven Chabot, Univ. of Toronto

Review
This is a sensitive and readable translation, whose poetic merits place it beyond other translations of Boethius's great text. (Henry Taylor)

A remarkable translation of one of the great masterpieces of philosophical literature. (Gail Holst-Warhaft, Cornell University)

A springboard for personal reflection and a source of literate pleasure. (Steven Chabot Library Journal 2008-09-15)

It's a remarkable book (though a short one), and its latest edition, rendered into fluid, compellingly immediate English by veteran translator David R. Slavitt, is very markedly the best one it's ever had...Slavitt presents the reader with Boethius brought to vibrant, vigorous life, to a degree that makes all previous English versions seem pedantic and irrelevant. Harvard University Press has crafted a physically beautiful volume, sturdy and small enough to fit in your pocket--an extremely fitting format for a book that's meant to be a comfort against life's ills. Reading this edition, even readers who've never encountered Boethius before will see at once why his book has meant so much to so many people for the last 1,500 years. (Steve Donoghue openlettersmonthly.com 2009-02-01)

This is a beautifully made little book that I have taken with me on a number of trips, partly just for the pleasure of holding it. At any time I would be glad to have it. (John Wilson Books and Culture 2009-03-20)

Short, Beautiful and Profound!
By SusieQ
This book inspired Dante and many others for centuries. Written in prison by a person of great intellect and fortune, until he met with treachery and died in AD 524, he questions his Fate. It is a Theodicy, but it is presented as a conversation between the prisoner and Lady Philosophy. Boethius questions everything, but finds all the answers. It is a shame that such a beautiful (and short) work of art, with such profound, clear thinking is not required in all colleges. Even high school! I had to wait until after I graduated to be exposed to such rich ideas, rich vocabulary, and profound thought. It is a shame. The analogy of the Wheel of Fortune was made popular by this book and there is so much wisdom in Lady Philosophy. I can't tell you how much I loved this book for challenging me to reflect on philosophy on many levels, to a degree that not many books force. The insight gained by understanding this book is immense and influences my thoughts today.

A worthy edition of a worthy book
By Richard P. Cember
I begin my comments with two disclaimers: (1) I would not presume to "review" Boethius, but I can offer a few superficial comments on this edition which may be of use to potential buyers; and (2) I do not know Latin, but can read Boethius only in translation.

There were many passages in this translation that I recognized as being definitely idiomatically modern. Those passages felt anachronistic to me and made me doubt to some extent that I was reading "the real thing", at least as much as one can ever read "the real thing" in translation. On the whole, though, allowing for that one not insignificant complaint, I recommend this translation for its fine, clear style.

The evident modernity of the translation made me want to read some other translation, so that when I was finished with this one, then just for something different, I chose Chaucer's Middle English translation, "Boece". I could not have successfully read "The Consolation of Philosophy" for the first time in Middle English, but I can read it in M.E. the second time. I am still chipping away at that, but so far Chaucer's translation seems distinctly more emotional to me than Slavitt's, and thus conveys a very different feeling. Maybe Chaucer and Slavitt have both impressed the emotional styles of their own ages onto the text? But how would I ever know? In any case, if the style of Slavitt's translation made me at once mostly happy, and yet needing to read another, then that is a sign of success for the translation.

As for Lerer's introduction, and also the physical quality of the book, I second the favorable comments of another reviewer, Mr. Allen Shull; see his review.

Excellent Book
By Akhilesh Pillalamarri
This is an excellent book to keep by the bedside, in order to glean some wisdom before sleep or when one has a bit of free time. In some ways, this book is to Greek philosophy what the Bhagavad Gita is to Indian philosophy. It summarizes and reconciles various streams of Greek philosophical thought with each other and with the concept of divinity and presents them not only as abstract philosophy (as later Western philosophy would evolve) but as praxis- as knowledge meant to be acted upon. The Consolation of Philosophy is thus a work that turns philosophy into religion. It is an interesting read and inspiration, especially if you are looking for something beyond the usual spirituality titles and its rationality is refreshing.

Indians of Southern Maryland, by Rebecca Seib, Helen C. Rountree

Here at last is the story of Southern Maryland’s Native people, from the end of the Ice Age to the present. Intended for a general audience, it explains how they have been adapting to changing conditions―both climatic and human―for all of that time in a way that is jargon-free and readable. The authors, cultural anthropologists with long experience of modern Indian people, convincingly demonstrate that all through their history, Native people have behaved like rational adults, contrary to the common stereotype of Indians. Moreover, in the very early Contact Period at least, some English settlers respected them accordingly. Unfortunately, although they never went to war against the English, they were driven nearly out of existence. Yet some of them refused to leave, and, adapting yet again to a changing world, their descendants are living successfully in Indian communities today.

Invaluable resource to anyone seeking to better understand the Native Americans in our area who are typically lost in the black/whiteness of our racial of the racial story. A must read for any one who lives in Southern Maryland and in Virginia where early misguided efforts to classify Native Americans and African Americans as "colored" in a white dominated society virtually destroyed the trail of Native American people.

Waste of ink
By Theora
This book has two radically different sections. The first part (up to page 132) is a documented history of the historical Piscataway tribe until they left Maryland around 1705. The second part is much shorter and is only about 50 pages. So 132 pages for less than 100 years and 50 pages for 300 years, which suggests that the research was lacking. Nothing connects the two parts other than that the authors assume some free families of color were Piscataways who stayed behind. However, there is no evidence that any of the families discussed were Indians. They called themselves Wesorts, rather than Piscataways. Wesorts denied descent from African Americans and married their relatives because they valued "pale skin over darker skin" (171). Anyone familiar with Jeff Foxworthy jokes would understand that marrying your cousin and denying black ancestry in a racist world is not proof of being an Indian. The authors drop oodles of genealogical relationships and land records, but no actual evidence. The statement that "it is generally useless to look for an 'Indian' label" (146), suggests that the authors were aware that there is no evidence for Indian ancestry. Seib indicates that she was hired by one of the Piscataway tribes, so she was trying to spin straw into gold. No Piscataway group has federal recognition and based on this book will never be able to obtain it. Reminds me of the people who tell me about their Cherokee great-grandmother.

Greatness
By dolphin girl
One of the giants of the science fiction world. It certainly shows in this story. Of course, it is so dated, but we can ignore the small details. The larger concepts shine here, and excite our imagination. What a wonderful story!

The formatting has one little quirk here. The story jumps from one scene (in one paragraph) to another scene (in the next paragraph) with no warning (no visible seperator). I'm used to seeing a line __________ or -------------------. Or ………… or ******** or > or ~~~~~~~~. Something to indicate a scene change. That was not done here.

That is my only issue, the content of the story was quite absorbing.

(It was sure kinda fun to type all those symbols. Wheeeeee!)

Going Reptile: How Engaging Your Inner Lizard Leads to More Fulfilling Work and Personal Relationships, by Martha C Hamilton

Going Reptile shows up in many different ways and intensities. We can “go reptile” at work, at home and in social situations. This affects us, and those around us. The impact is often much greater than we realize. When we “go reptile”, we enter into an automatic reactive mode. We’re designed to react and consolidate our resources for safety, and when it’s a bear we’re running from, it makes very good sense. At the office or at home, the result can be considerably less than optimal. The good news is that we also have another operating system. A more advanced operating system that begins to come online once we learn how to engage it. The more we engage it, the more it becomes the primary operating system, and the stronger it gets, effectively side-stepping the older operating system unless it’s needed, for instance, if we encounter a bear. This quick-read book is packed with practical information. It is focused on a professional context, but it will help you navigate this reptilian territory in other areas of your life as well.

Review
I just have to say that this book is brilliant!!! You explain with simplicity a very complex topic you've reached the simplicity on the other side of complexity. Your book is eloquent, engaging, easy to read and immediately applicable! As I read, everything was like something I already knew but couldn't have put into words that are this accessible! I'm going to use this as a coach and recommend it to my clients! --D.E., Seattle, WA

Going Reptile is a fun, easy-to-read synopsis of applied emotional intelligence. I can easily see it becoming one of those extremely popular books that you'll see on everyone's desk. The Going Reptile theme is catchy. It reminds me of the very successful book, Who Moved My Cheese of years past. --L.K., Phoenix, AZ

Finally, a book that addresses how emotional reactivity hijacks our functioning and shows what we can do about it. Martha Hamilton has done a masterful job using simple, user-friendly language and cartoon graphics to communicate a continuum of complex brain functioning that affects all of us. This is one of those books in which every reader will be able to recognize herself at her worst and be guided to find herself at her best. As a marriage and family therapist, I have found the concepts described in Going Reptile to be most helpful in working with people in dealing with difficult emotional situations and in resolving conflict. Many times, people have asked for a book to help them remember these concepts. Until now, I have not had anything that was user-friendly enough to recommend. This is a book that will not only be highly recommended in my office, I plan to buy a stack of them to give people to use immediately. --E.M., Helena, Montana

This wonderful little book is a fun and light hearted way of addressing a really big deal - the way we all get diverted from our best intentions by fear. Not only does the book parse out the important dimensions of how fear grabs us- it also offers practical tips for self observation and corrective action. I recommend this book as a great gift for your friends and relatives (and yourself) who get upset, really don't understand what is happening, and that there a strategies available that will bring more joy to their lives.

"I'm fine!" ... really?
By Amazon Customer
Kudos to Martha Hamilton for revealing in such an engaging and memorable way how important it is to catch ourselves "going reptile" early! Over the years I've learned a lot of ways to supposedly shake stress off and re-calibrate, but now wonder - how many of us run around thinking "I'm fine!" when we're really operating with half our higher-level human functions? The tips for recognizing survival responses (in ourselves or in others) were very useful and appreciated. I keep this book handy!

From Publishers Weekly
A chorus of fatalism, stoic bravery and black, black humor is sounded in this haunting oral history of the 1986 nuclear reactor catastrophe in what is now northeastern Ukraine. Russian journalist Alexievich records a wide array of voices: a woman who clings to her irradiated, dying husband though nurses warn her "that's not a person anymore, that's a nuclear reactor"; a hunter dispatched to evacuated villages to exterminate the household pets; soldiers sent in to clean up the mess, bitter at the callous, incompetent Soviet authorities who "flung us there, like sand on the reactor," but accepting their lot as a test of manhood; an idealistic nuclear engineer whose faith in communism is shattered. And there are the local peasants who take this latest in a long line of disasters in stride, filtering back to their homes to harvest their contaminated potatoes, shrugging that if they survived the Germans, they'll survive radiation. Alexievich shapes these testimonies into novelistic "monologues" that convey a vivid portrait of late-Communist malaise, in which bullying party bosses, paranoid propaganda and chaotic mobilizations are resisted with bleak sarcasm ("It wasn't milk, it was a radioactive byproduct"), mournful philosophizing ("[t]he mechanism of evil will work under conditions of apocalypse") and lots of vodka. The result is an indelible X-ray of the Russian soul.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* "Chernobyl is like the war of all wars. There's nowhere to hide." On April 26, 1986, the people of Belarus lost everything when a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded. Many people died outright, and many were evacuated, forced to leave behind everything from pets to family photographs. Millions of acres remain contaminated, and thousands of people continue to be afflicted with diseases caused by radiation as 20 tons of nuclear fuel sit in a reactor shielded by a leaking sarcophagus known as the Cover. For three years, journalist Alexievich spoke with scores of survivors--the widow of a first responder, an on-the-scene cameraman, teachers, doctors, farmers, Party bureaucrats, a historian, scientists, evacuees, resettlers, grandmothers, mothers--and she now presents their shocking accounts of life in a poisoned world. And what quintessentially human stories these are, as each distinct voice expresses anger, fear, ignorance, stoicism, valor, compassion, and love. Alexievich put her own health at risk to gather these invaluable frontline testimonies, which she has transmuted into a haunting and essential work of literature that one can only hope documents a never-to-be-repeated catastrophe. Raw
By Roger Brunyate
-- I'll get down on my knees to beg you--please, find our Anna Sushko. She lived in our village. In Kozhushki. Her name is Anna Sushko. I'll tell you how she looked, and you'll type it up. She has a hump, and she was mute from birth. She lived by herself. She was sixty. During the time of the transfer they put her in an ambulance and drove her off somewhere. She never learned to read, so we never got any letters from her. The lonely and the sick were put in special places. They hid them. But no one knows where…. The whole village took care of her, like she was a little girl.

Unlike most recent Nobel Prize winners, Svetlana Alexievich writes simply and directly, without any tricks of style, and the emotion she distills is heartbreaking. For these words are not her own, but those of survivors of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, faithfully transcribed by her down to the silences, tears, and hesitations, and lucidly translated by Keith Gessen. Start at the beginning, or open to any page, and you will find yourself drawn into these poor people's lives: townspeople who go out on their balconies to watch the unusual colors of the reactor fire, farmers forced to leave their crops and cattle, soldiers and firemen drafted in with inadequate protection to clean up the mess. It is very easy to read, and unbearably human. Or starkly human and eventually unbearable to read, because the stories of stolen lives are told in their raw form and never let up.

The book is framed by two longish sections headed "A Solitary Human Voice," the accounts of widows, newlyweds and very much in love, seeing their husbands come back and basically rot before their eyes. It continues with monologues, dialogues, choruses, the voices of soldiers, resettlers, children, all meticulously attributed with their real names. There is tragedy, of course, and even more pathos. One returning soldier burns all his clothing except for his army cap which is coveted by his little boy; two years later, the child is dead of a brain tumor. One woman smuggles out her radioactive cat in a suitcase. Another goes to see her doctor:

-- "Sweety," I say, "my legs don't move. The joints hurt." "You need to give up your cow, grandma. The milk's poisoned." "Oh, no," I say, "my legs hurt, my knees hurt, but I won't give up the cow. She feeds me."

There is rumor and superstition here, but much genuine faith; ignorance and a strange kind of poetry. Bewilderment is only the other side of the coin to a previous belief in the stability of the simple life; sorrow is the obverse of love. The light of the disaster illuminates the lives of ordinary people; I could well believe that this is a better portrait of the Russian soul than any number of novels. There are even touches of characteristic black humor:

-- There was a Ukrainian woman at the market selling big red apples. "Come get your apples! Chernobyl apples!" Someone told her not to advertise that, no one will buy them. "Don't worry," she says. "They buy them anyway. Some need them for their mother-in-law, some for their boss."

One man tried to write about his experiences. "I sent the story to a journal. They wrote back saying that this wasn't a work of literature, but the description of a nightmare." Which makes me ask the question of Alexievich herself: a nighmare certainly, but is this literature as we know it? It felt more like the raw materials waiting to be made into literature by someone else. Being a theatrical person myself, I kept on wondering how I might select from those monologues and choruses to put them on the stage, set them to music perhaps, at any rate do something to give them shape and overall meaning. The author divides her book into three major sections: The Land of the Dead, The Land of the Living, and Amazed by Sadness. But the texture of the narratives is much the same in each; there is no obvious structural arc, no particular reason why you should continue to subject yourself to such a succession of tales of woe. But perhaps I would be wrong to try to force these stories into a shape that has some meaning. They HAVE no meaning, no larger redemptive purpose. And that is her point.

Keith Gessen, the translator, opens with an introduction giving some of the facts and dates of the disaster. But with the exception of a brief preface, Alexievich herself does not. In her equally brief closing section, In Place of an Epilogue, she explains why, and also why she feels the subject is so urgent: because living in a country with 350 atomic bombs, the threat of nuclear holocaust is all too real. Let me end my review, therefore, with her own voice after reading so many others:

-- I often thought that the simple fact, the mechanical fact, is no closer to the truth than a vague feeling, rumor, vision. Why repeat the facts--they cover up our feelings. The development of these feelings, the spilling of these feelings past the facts, is what fascinated me. I try to find them, collect them, protect them. These people had already seen what for everyone else is still unknown. I felt like I was recording the future.

A PIECE OF HISTORY THAT WE CANT AND WONT FORGET.
By JustMyOpinion
This book was a great emotional rollercoaster. I have studied and read many books and articles on the subject of Chernobyl, but now I can see and feel the emotions of the people that lived it. No, I take that back, I can just slightly feel and see...these people went through more pain and anguish than any person should ever go through. What a testament to a generation that doesn't seem to grasp the concept of fear. They don't fear anything but their government. They "fear the state more than the atom". What a great book...everyone should read this. It makes your problems seem very small in comparison. There is nothing I didn't like about this book. This literature flows into your soul and then steals your breath and comes out again and leaves you feeling sadness and empathy. We need to be careful in the future with what we are doing to nature and Earth. Its our home...our only logical one, anyway. Excellent. Just bravo.

Breathtaking!
By Miss Collins
Alexievich was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature. I was compelled to read one of her texts. I settled on the Voices of Chernobyl. This book is a collection of Chernobyl survivors's interviews. This ongoing tragedy is momentous. The first story is almost too painful to read because we empathize with this young and naive wife who slowly watches her husband die over 14 days, and the last story is also about a young wife who watched her husband slowly die over years. All members of society have voices in this collection. While I was reading this book, I thought and wondered about the survivors, and I knew that most, or probably all, are dead. The ramifications of this accident will last for decades, centuries, and probably millennia. This book is not for the faint of heart.

After reading this book in one sitting, I found ...
By K.K. Press
After reading this book in one sitting, I found myself feeling unusually buoyant and uplifted, and realized that I was starting to put the author's helpful, handy suggestions to work without even thinking about it. I now find challenging situations and difficult relationships much easier to handle if I consciously draw on Rachel Kelley's accessible, small steps -- reminding myself that each small step brings me closer to my goal. This book has become a reassuring constant companion.

Simple, yet profound
By Maja Dezulovic
This book arrived as one of those little surprises delivered by the friendly postman. I opened the package and almost immediately began to read it. After two sittings that afternoon, I'd read through it. Walking on Sunshine is a brilliantly put together book which delivers meaningful messages in simple and straight-forward language, accompanied by whimsical illustrations.
I could relate to the author, having suffered two bouts of depression and sought different methods of dealing with anxiety and the stresses of everyday life. I also love poetry and one of my favourites, If by Rudyard Kipling, is quoted.
There are only a handful of books that I keep to refer to again and again, and that remain close to my heart. I know I've discovered an addition to this bookshelf and the last few pages of the book were set aside for notes, which will come in handy as I re-read it and make my own personal reminders. Well, that is after I manage to snatch the book back from my husband, who began reading it the moment I put it down.
All in all, I think Walking on Sunshine has achieved what it set out to and I feel better for having read it and I can't help but walk to the rhythm of Katrina & The Waves as I think about it...
Thank you Rachel! :)
